Art Attack with Professor Elias Jengo

The team of Bookmarked is pleased to introduce to you a dynamic and versatile artist by the name of Elias Jengo who is a professor at the Department of Fine and Performing Arts at the University of Dar es Salaam. He lives with his
wife, a grand daughter, 2 large dogs, 72 ducks and 24 local chickens.
Born in Tanga on May 27, 1936 he is from the of a family of 8 children, Elias was inspired at the age of five by his two older brothers who had a knack for drawing.
Creativity ran in his blood as his father was a teacher during the German Administration in Tanzania and loved to play the trumpet and cornet while his mother practiced pottery and composed wedding and church songs.
Professor Elias has no favourites when it comes to his work as he believes that each of his work is done at a particular moment with a specific inspiration, this is what makes him so different. He loves to experiment with different media like paper, oils and cloth material.
He enjoys his painting most when he is sending a message to the audience otherwise he considers painting to be a painful activity. If he didn’t opt for becoming an artist, he would have become a priest; this explains his importance of sending messages.
His favourite artists are Skunder Bhoghossian, Sam Ntiro, Bruce Onobrakpeya and Francis Nnagenda. He feels that these creative contemporary artists project their cultural identity in their artworks, something that is lacking in most artists of the new generation in Africa.
An interesting fact about this professor’s great
talent is that he was chosen as the overall winner in an art project that the International Telephone and Telegraph Company launched in 1970 during the installation of telex services in East Africa. Countries which took part were Kenya, Uganda, Somalia, Mauritius, Seychelles and Tanzania.
His remarkable designs are found at the Air Tanzania terminal building, Posts and Telecommunication headquarters and St.Alban’s Anglican
Church, to name a few. His earliest paintings can be found in the National Museum and House of Culture.
It is a delight to see such diverse and bold creativity in Tanzania. Professor Elias Jengo gives us the motivation that there is no right or wrong when it comes to creativity. All his paintings have different meanings and yet they stand out from a distance. It is because of talented artists like him that Art in Tanzania is becoming recognized globally.
