Why Use Ingram Library Services’ BookMARC® Cataloging System?
Ingram’s BookMARC database contains the entire Library of Congress cataloging database.
This includes not only all available Library of Congress MARC records, but also all Library of
Congress Name and Subject authority records.
The BookMARC database also includes cataloging executed by Ingram’s degreed
cataloging librarians. These experienced professionals adhere to all national standards and
practices as outlined in AACR2r, Library of Congress Subject Headings, 11th edition; Library of
Congress Classification Schedules; Dewey Decimal Classification, 21st edition; or any subsequent
editions or revisions of these sources as well as Sears Subject Headings.
Cataloging through Ingram provides fast, efficient delivery of your materials. When your
order is received, it is immediately processed through the Ingram BookMARC system. The
cataloging materials that you request (catalog cards, spine and pocket labels, barcoded circulation
labels, etc.) are produced in the distribution center from which your order is filled, matched with
your order, and shipped.
As you look through this profile, be sure to read the BookMARC tips in sidebars on many of
the pages. These provide useful ways to make the most of what BookMARC can do for you.
Why Is This Profile Form Necessary?
This profile is the controlling set of instructions for cataloging provided through Ingram.
Once your profile is complete, it will be attached to your account and all subsequent orders will
be handled according to the profile. To verify that the profile is correct, a test order will be
provided for your approval. Cataloged and processed orders will not be shipped until approval is
received. After approval of the test, the profile will remain active until you instruct us to revise it.
How Do I Complete This Profile?
Once you have completed the basic profile information on page 1, complete either the items
relating to Dewey classification (pages 2 through 7) or Library of Congress classification (pages 8
through 13). Then complete the information for card sets (pages 13 through 14), label sets (pages
14 through 16), and automated systems (pages 17 through 18). If you have questions regarding
the profile, please contact Ingram Library Services at (800) 937-5300, option 2.
Completed profiles may be submitted to your sales representative or mailed to Customer
Requirements, Ingram Library Services, Mail Stop 639, One Ingram Blvd., La Vergne, TN 37086.
Default cataloging options are indicated by bold, italicized text. If you do not choose an
option in a particular category, the system will default to the indicated option. Default options are
those most commonly selected by libraries.

A check digit is acharacter, usually thelast digit of a barcodenumber, which is usedto verify the relation-ship of the other digitswithin the number. Itis computed using amathematical formulawhich uses every othernumeric digit withinthe number. It is usu-ally easy to spot whenviewing a sequentialseries of barcode num-bers. For example, it isthe digit that is out ofsequence of ISBNs:
0060186968006018697600601869840060186992
If barcodes are to beprovided and sever-al accounts exist foryour library, either specify a discreterange for eachaccount or indicatethe account whichcarries the barcoderange to be sharedwith this one. Thiswill prevent duplicate barcodesfrom being generated.
Sample Barcode LabelsPlease paste at least two barcode labels on the inside back cover of this booklet. This allows us to scanthe images to verify start and stop characters as well as check digits. Barcodes provided should be insequence.
Start and Stop CharactersEven though you may not see them on the printed barcode labels, some barcode schemes includespecial characters which signal the scanning device to start and stop scanning the image. If youare unsure, you may be able to set one of your scanners to show start and stop characters, allow-ing you to scan and check your barcodes.
