Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso history begins with the legacy of Isabel Caces de Brown. She, together with her daughters and heiresses - Isabel and María Teresa - started down the path that would find the first university in Valparaíso’s region and the fourth university in the country.

On March 25th, 1928 the Universidad Católica de Valparaíso opened its doors to the community with two faculties: Industries and Applied Sciences, and Business and Economic Sciences.

Since its foundation, PUCV has expanded and developed its academic scope to become one of the most important universities in the country. It offers more than one hundred undergraduate, post-graduate, and specialization programs to a highly qualified student body of over 13,000 students.

During the celebration of its 75th anniversary in 2003, Pope John Paul II recognized the University’s continual work and investment in education by bestowing upon it the title of “Pontifical”, a distinction carried by only eighteen universities in the world.

Since its foundation, PUCV has expanded and developed its academic scope to become one of the most important universities in the country.

Since the returning of its democracy in the early 1990’s, Chile has become widely recognized for its political, economic, and social stability. It has also achieved an important consensus among different sectors of the society, looking forward to the construction of a common national project. In doing so, different international reports have placed our country within the top positions concerning human development rates and economic growth within Latin America.

Chile is the gateway to Latin America and an ideal study destination. Having a territory lined with 4500 kilometres (2794.5 miles) of coastal waters along the Pacific Ocean, home to almost all types of landscapes and climate to be found in the world —from the desert sands to everlasting icebergs, beaches, humid forests, lakes, and steppes— Chile represents an experience waiting to be discovered.

Another important attribute of Chile recognized abroad is that of being a very safe country to live and to study in. Criminal rates are very low in our country and the existence of a favourable atmosphere for a pacific social life is a widely shared perception among its inhabitants.

PUCV’s main buildings are located in the city of Valparaíso, Chile’s most important gate to the Pacific Ocean and home of the Country’s Parliament headquarters and at only 120 kms away from the capital city, Santiago. With sixteen buildings distributed throughout the cities of Valparaíso, Viña del Mar, Quilpué, Quillota and Curauma, PUCV is currently the largest university in the Region.

The city of Valparaíso, rich in history, architecture, and former main port in Latin America, has received international recognition by becoming “World Heritage Site” by UNESCO in 2003. The area is characterized by the magnificent architecture of its buildings, as well as by the natural amphitheatre that is formed by the surrounding hills looking at the Pacific Ocean. Its hills reflect the early colonization of European immigrants, who built their homes to take

advantage of the impressive panoramic views of the shore. Its winding roads, numerous funiculars (known as elevators) inhabitants, and eclectic culture make the city a unique study destination.

The “Open Sky Museum”, an initiative of our University, is one of the most original exhibition spaces for both national and Latin American plastic arts production. It contains a series of 20 murals from outstanding national artists like Roberto Matta, Nemesio Antúnez, Mario Toral, Roser Bru, among others.

Viña del Mar: The Garden City

Both, Viña del Mar and Valparaiso, have a privileged Mediterranean climate, offering an agreeable life to those people interested in living in the region.

Viña del Mar is Chile’s touristic capital. Owner of a great urban beauty in harmony with the sea, it fosters beautiful beaches alongside its 9 kilometers of coastal border and has a wide cultural, gastronomic, and recreational offering.

Research

PUCV takes part of an exclusive group of universities leading the research activities in Chile, which are strongly related to the graduate study areas, being its principal fields of development: engineering, basic sciences, biotechnology, agronomy, natural resources, law, social sciences, and humanities.

In order to produce knowledge of excellence the University counts with a solid team of researchers who apply top-notch technology in laboratories and pilot projects. PUCV Research infrastructure is comprised of analysis laboratories, asphalt, cement and ground mechanics laboratories; animal cell cultivation, entomology and nematology laboratories, an electrical power laboratory, to mention a few.

Our University is committed to the different challenges existing in the surroundings. Taking on these same challenges as their own and in an effort to offer the country its knowledge, human capacities, and services, the University promotes an active role in its relationship with the industry and external sectors by carrying out technical cooperation activities, attracting investors, and generating new technology-based businesses.

PUCV takes special pride in our international outreach of technical cooperation, and do so by conducting practices like laboratory trials, analysis, and quality controls. We utilize professional consultants, technology innovation, training activities, and highly developed, specialized technology improvements and transference, in order to maintain the most elite level of technological innovation.

International Relations

Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaiso has developed a permanent work aiming at increasing its capacities, both in the national and international fields, through the promotion and coordination of academic partnerships with related institutions abroad.

By working directly with our University’s faculties, PUCV fosters academic alliances with universities and organizations all over the world.

Such alliances are now expressed in over 300 international cooperation agreements with different institutions and international organizations. These agreements enable the PUCV to have permanent contacts abroad and participate within a strong network of institutions, through which important teaching activities, research projects and continuing education initiatives have been developed.

International CooperationThrough its history and from the city of Valparaiso, PUCV has contributed significantly to the internationalization of the Chilean higher education system becoming over the time a complex university. In general, today, given the characteristics of an increasingly interdependent world economic, political, social and culturally, the challenges that higher education institutions have are enormous and fascinating. In this sense, globalization appears as a way to address and respond to both locally and globally. In particular, as a complex university, PUCV is linked to the international world through various units which include, among others: the work that its researchers do at the graduate level, national and international undergraduate student mobility - with formats and types of diverse and varied academic work - teaching Spanish as a foreign language, the work of international

Outgoing Students

Our Institution encourages Chilean students to do a sojourn in a foreign country through the Student Mobility Program, PME. Our students choose from the following alternatives.

Bilateral Agreements

Currently our University maintains over 200 different agreements with universities located in Germany, Australia, Canada, Korea, Costa Rica, Spain, The United States, Finland, France, Italy, México, Romania, Sweden, Austria, Colombia, Ecuador, Holland, Paraguay, Portugal, Denmark, and Norway.

Multilateral Agreements

ISEP: International Student Exchange Program, a network of more than 270 post-secondary institutions from all over the world.

DAAD: German government agency that allows Agronomy, and Engineering students to spend one year at German universities. It provides financial aid through the Student Exchange German Service.

To access these courses the student takes a written diagnosis test and a 10 minutes oral interview. According to the student’s needs and interests s/he decides what courses to take and at what level, from the information provided by the diagnosis test and her or his needs.

Program overviewInternational students are enrolled in regular courses with Chilean students according to their academic needs. Regular courses are taught in Spanish; and there are exclusive courses for foreigners in History, Literature and Music. Some Law and Philosophy courses are offered on an annual basis.

CreditsAll international students must take at least 15 PUCV credits during a semester. The maximum number of credits suggested for those students whose native language is not Spanish is 18. However the maximum can go up to 22 (a regular PUCV student takes from 20 to 22 credits per semester)

Brief descriptionPUCV is an official Instituto Cervantes’ DELE Examination Center. Each year our University participates in the May and November calls.

The ‘Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera’ DELE, issued by the Instituto Cervantes on behalf of the Spanish Ministry for Education, are official qualifications accrediting levels of competence and command of the Spanish language.

These Diplomas certify based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages through 6 levels, being B2 the level that will enable individuals to work or study in a Spanish speaking country.

DELE Certification is highly recommended for those students participating in the “Academic stay in Valparaíso” and “Contemporary Latin American Studies” programs.

Open Spanish Programs (3 to 5 weeks)

Open Spanish programs are structured mainly for improving students’ listening and speaking skills.Classes are taught in a workshop-style, also including walks around the cultural heritage zone of Valparaíso. Those students in possession of an advanced Spanish level will be able to take special courses related to social issues and Chilean literature.

Also, most of the people talk very fast which makes the experience even more challenging when listening and speaking the language. This seems to be a very different culture in relation with the rest of the continent. Moreover, Valparaiso is one of the oldest cities in the country, so there is plenty of culture and history here.”

International Student Services

Homestay

PUCV works with families that welcome international students into their homes providing them an additional bond to our culture and language. This type of experience allows the student not only to improve their language skills but also to know Chilean culture from the relationships established in daily life with a family and to appreciate how social relations are within a family group and with its environment.

There are other types of housing available for those students enrolled in long-term programs and the coordinator will advise students about the options available.

Short-term and ISEP students are always placed in host families.

Health and Safety

Either in long or short term programs, international students will have a 24/7 emergency contact in case of health or safety assistance while they attend our University. Please be aware that comprehensive health insurance plan will be required when participating in any of our programs.

Visa and immigration procedures

All our students, weather they come for a short or a long term period, will receive assistance to follow all visa and immigration procedures required for international students.

University Facilities

International students have access to all students’ facilities in our University and International Relations Office. These include computer labs, WiFi, sport areas and libraries to mention a few.

Interaction with Chilean students

Either in long-term or short term programs, our international students have the opportunity to interact with Chilean students to practice the language.

Volunteer Work

The Office of International Programs has a close relationship with different institutions and NGOs where international students can take part carrying out voluntary work during the semester.

DAE workshops

DAE, Dirección de Asuntos Estudiantiles, offers a variety of activities to chilean students where international students can also take part.

Sports

Our office invites all international students to join the sports activities that our sports coordinator organizes for students in short and long term programs. Students spending a semester at PUCV can also team up and represent international students in the intramuraltournaments.

Agenda cultural

Twice a month our students receive a list of cultural activities programmed in the region. Valparaíso is well known for having a very diverse cultural activities and some of them are for free.
