Joe starts dreaming of a Man. And this dream starts to overwhelm him. The Man’s voice starts to speak to him in his dreams. And then the voice starts to permeate Joe’s waking moments as well.
Until one day…the Man says

And so Joe waits. He decides to wait for the Man. He sits on his front stoop and waits. And soon a dude from the media discovers him. And Joe’s story goes public. And is no longer his.

While waiting he eats a lot of pizza. It becomes an issue.

People were being drawn to me just to take a look. I was a spot to click into on location-based social networks. A new kind of proper noun. People took their own pictures. They brought their kids, posed them in front of me, took a picture, and left.

And then the Man instructs Joe to “go West.” And Joe does. And a car dealer from Uniondale, Long Island, offers to sponsor the trip, and lends Joe a red Honda Odyssey.

He knows he’s “West” when he passes through St. Louis.
