MRS. Mc GINTY’S DEAD

AGATHA CHRISTIE

Creator of Hercule Poirot, a Belgian Detective and Miss Jane Marple.

Born in Torquay.

She was educated at home, mother encouraged her to write.

Died on January 12, 1976 in Wallingford , Oxfordshire

Her father died when she was young , she was from an average income family.

Married Archibald Christie (1914).

During World War 1 she worked in The Red Cross Hospital.

Gained knowledge of poisons which was helpful during writing mysteries.

FIRST NOVEL- The Mysterious Affair at Styles introduced Hercule Poirot.

Her marriage broke in 1926.

In the same year her mother died.

Later she married Max Mallowan , an archaeologist.

Her most prolific period began in late 1920’s

During the 1930s she published four mystery novels, fourteen Poirot novels, two Marple novels, two Superintendent Battle books, a book of stories featuring Harley Quin and another featuring Mr. Parken Pyne, an additional Maru Westmacott book, and two original plays.

Characters are usually well to do people. Villains use complicated style of committing

crimes but are caught finally. World view was conservative. Her works give logical explanation of crimes

but don’t criticize the society for those crimes. Christie had become a limited company by

1955. It was acquired by Booker Books in1960’s.

She became the president of British Detection Club.

She was conferred Dame of British Empire in 1971.

Published in United States by Dodd, Mead & Company in February 1952.

In UK it was published by Collins Crime Club on March 3, 1952.

Blood Will Tell. Story is A “Village mystery”. There is wit and comedy.

Poirot , disillusioned by the “senseless cruel brutality” of modern crime, pays no attention to the sad case of Mrs. Mc Ginty, an old woman apparently struck dead by her lodger for thirty pounds that she kept under a floorboard. When, however , he is asked by an investigating officer to take another look at the case in order to stop an innocent man from going to the gallows, he realizes that things may not be as simple as they first appeared to be.

The Observer of March 23, 1952 thought that Poirot was,

"slightly subdued" and summed up "Not

one of A.C's best-constructed jobs, yet far more readable than most other

people's.”

Robert Barnard: "This village murder begins among the

rural proletariat but after a time it moves toward the better-spoken classes. Highly ingenious – at this point she is still able to vary the tricks she plays, not repeat them."

Agatha Christie is truly a prolific writer who after being struck by the senseless cruel brutality of modern crime was amazed when she saw the case of McGinty’s death. There are enough thrills in the book and it is entertaining to move through the course of it.The best part of her writings is that Christie always gives a logical explanation for crimes, but society is not blamed. Murder is not a sign of degeneration of middle-class values. After the crime is solved, life continues happily.
