AUTHOR’S LIFE

J. K. Rowling, born in 1965, British author, who writes about the magical adventures of a boy wizard named Harry Potter. The Harry Potter book series dominated bestseller lists beginning in the late 1990s, attracting millions of fans worldwide among children and adults alike.

I. NAMEAlthough she writes under the

pen name "J. K. Rowling", (pronounced like rolling), her name when her first Harry Potter book was published was simply "Joanne Rowling". Anticipating that the target audience of young boys might not want to read a book written by a woman, her publishers demanded that she use two initials, rather than her full name. As she had no middle name, she chose K as the second initial of her pen name, from her paternal grandmother Kathleen Ada Bulgen Rowling.

II. Birth, Family, and Childhood

Rowling was born to Peter James Rowling and Anne Rowling (née Volant), on 31 July 1965 in Yate, Gloucestershire, England, 10 miles (16 km) northeast of Bristol. Her mother Anne was half-French, half-Scottish.

Rowling's sister Dianne was born at their home when Rowling was 23 months old. The family moved to the nearby village Winterbourne when Rowling was four. She attended St Michael's Primary School, a school founded by abolitionist William Wilberforce and education reformer Hannah More. Her headmaster at St Michael's, Alfred Dunn, has been suggested as the inspiration for the Harry Potter headmaster Albus Dumbledore.

As a child, Rowling often wrote fantasy stories, which she would usually then read to her sister. She recalls that "I can still remember me telling her a story in which she fell down a rabbit hole and was fed strawberries by the rabbit family inside it. Certainly the first story I ever wrote down (when I was five or six) was about a rabbit called Rabbit. He got the measles and was visited by his friends, including a giant bee called Miss Bee. At the age of nine, Rowling moved to Church Cottage in the Gloucestershire village of Tutshill, close to Chepstow, Wales. When she was a young teenager, her great aunt, who Rowling said "taught classics and approved of a thirst for knowledge, even of a questionable kind", gave her a very old copy of Jessica Mitford's autobiography, Hons and Rebels. Mitford became Rowling's heroine, and Rowling subsequently read all of her books.

Page 3: Book Report in English

She attended secondary school at Wyedean School and College, where her mother, Anne, had worked as a technician in the Science Department. Rowling said of her adolescence, "Hermione is loosely based on me. She's a caricature of me when I was eleven, which I'm not particularly proud of." Sean Harris, her best friend in the Upper Sixth owned a turquoise Ford Anglia, which she says inspired the one in her books. "Ron Weasley isn't a living portrait of Sean, but he really is very Sean-ish." Of her musical tastes of the time, she said "My favourite group in the world is The Smiths. And when I was going through a punky phase, it was The Clash." Rowling studied A Levels in English, French and German before reading for a BA in French and Classics at the University of Exeter, which she says was a "bit of a shock" as she "was expecting to be amongst lots of similar people – thinking radical thoughts." Once she made friends with "some like-minded people" she says she began to enjoy herself. After a year of study in Paris, Rowling moved to London to work as a researcher and bilingual secretary for Amnesty International.

III. Marriage and Harry Potter

Rowling moved to Portugal at age 26, where she taught English. While there, she married a Portuguese journalist, and they had a daughter in 1993. During this time she began writing a book about an orphaned boy who lives with his mean-spirited aunt and uncle and does not know that he is actually a wizard with magic powers.

By 1995 Rowling was divorced, and she moved to Edinburgh, Scotland. Unable to pay for childcare, Rowling went on public assistance and continued writing her book, often jotting down passages in cafés while her daughter slept at her side.

In 1995, Rowling finished her manuscript for Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone on an old manual typewriter. Upon the enthusiastic response of Bryony Evens, a reader who had been asked to review the book's first three chapters, the Fulham-based Christopher Little Literary Agents agreed to represent Rowling in her quest for a publisher. The book was submitted to twelve publishing houses, all of which rejected the manuscript. A year later she was finally given the green light (and a £1500 advance) by editor Barry Cunningham from Bloomsbury, a small publishing house in London. The decision to publish Rowling's book apparently owes much to Alice Newton, the eight-year-old daughter of Bloomsbury's chairman, who was given the first chapter to review by her father and immediately demanded the next. Although Bloomsbury agreed to publish the book, Cunningham says that he advised Rowling to get a day job, since she had little chance of making money in children's books. Soon after, in 1997, Rowling received an £8000 grant from the Scottish Arts Council to enable her to continue writing.

SUMMARY

Harry has finally come of age as a full wizard. He doesn’t attend his seventh year at Hogwarts, instead he and his friends, Ron and Hermione, embarks on a journey to find Voldemort’s Horcruxes that would help in defeating the dark lord. Throughout their journey, Harry would be able to unearth Dumbledore’s past including the rumors of about his death, and he would gain knowledge about a certain emblem, the Deathly Hallows. As he returns to Hogwarts to face Lord Voldemort, he is faced with greater choices. To live and let others die in the war, or he dies and save all the people who helped him. Harry then faces death which also caused the death of Voldemort. In the epilogue, it was 19 years after the Second Wizarding War. Harry had three children with Ginny Weasley whom he named after his parents, and the two great wizards he had met, Albus Dumbledore and Severus Snape. The story ends with Harry being happy about his scar not bothering him anymore. Instead, it became a mark of courage and heroism.

BOOK REVIEW QUESTIONS

1. What was the author’s purpose?

JK Rowling’s purpose for writing this book is to entertain the readers about a boy, who is actually a wizard, his adventures, friends, and foes. However, her purpose does not only dwell unto telling the life of the Young Wizard, but also into making her readers understand more about what is happening in the society. That there will always be evil, but there is also good that is left, which is worth fighting for. In addition, JK Rowling also introduces to us more about the importance of magic as we grow old, that we should not forget about it, because magic, in times of anxiety, will always bring back the child in us.

2. Was her purpose worthwhile?

Yes, JK Rowling’s purpose is sensible. Her purpose helps us open our eyes to reality about the society. Her purpose sole reason that I, as an avid reader, wanted to lay my hands on every Harry Potter book as soon as possible by the time it is released.

3. Was her purpose accomplished? If so, how?

JK’s purpose was well accomplished. By making twists between plots making the story more interesting, Rowling was able to reach out to her readers and made them understand her purpose.

REPORT

Page 11: Book Report in English

I. The effect that the author produces

Harry Potter phenomenon, as they call it, is one of the effects that the author had produced. She created a phenomenon that had touched the hearts of people over the decade. It even came to such point when people of all ages, they may be young or young at heart considered themselves as “potter heads”, or the “philosophers” who are experts in the make believe field of Harry Potter. They created their own universe similar to that of Harry Potter, where magical creatures exist and the world is divided between “muggles” or normal people, and “magical beings” who posses special abilities.

In the literature sense, Rowling creates a strong impact to people through her stories. The twists in the plot, betrayal of some characters, and conflicts in the story contributed into one of the greatest masterpiece of all time.

II. The way she produces the effect

People get attached into the story easily. The reason behind this is the way how Rowling writes her characters and events, making her readers connect with them. She effectively makes vivid descriptions of these characters and events that make the readers feel as if these individuals exist and events occurred.

Her style in writing the twists in the plot, and conflicts in the story had put a great impact to the overall quality of the novel, making it unique and magical.

A. Setting

The setting of the story took place in both the magical and non magical realms of Great Britain. Included in which are Number 4, Privet Drive, Little Whinging, Surrey, England where Harry Potter stayed and grew up for 16 years, and Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, in Scotland, where Potter studied and honed his skills to become a great wizard.

B. Plot

Harry has finally come of age, and finally started on his final journey to defeat Voldemort for good. The Durselys are forced to go into hiding so that Voldemort’s Death Eaters will not torture them for information, and Harry sets off with Ron and Hermione on a difficult quest to find and destroy the last of Voldemort’s Horcruxes. Only once those have been destroyed, Harry knows, can Voldemort truly be killed.

Harry is plagued with rumors of Dumbledore’s past, and begins to wonder if the Headmaster he so long revered might have had a much darker past than he ever let on. The three are frequently without food, and with winter coming

Page 12: Book Report in English

their journey is no day at the beach. Because of their lack of plan, lack of food, and lack of progress, their spirits are often low, and Ron especially becomes argumentative. One night he and Harry get into an epic fight and Ron leaves to go back home.

Harry and Hermione are devastated that he’d abandoned them. They finally decide to revisit Godric’s Hollow in search of clues, and once again they’re almost caught by Voldemort. They’ve almost died too many times to

count, and their spirits sink even lower when Harry discovers his wand was broken in the battle.

Ron redeems himself a few weeks later by coming back and saving Harry’s life in the nick of time. They manage to destroy another Horcrux with Gryffindor’s sword, and they become excited again as they begin to learn about a mysterious trio of magical objects called the Deathly Hallows. Whomever possesses the three objects will be a master of death, and to Harry, it’s his one chance to beat Voldemort and live to tell the tale.

As his adventures and the danger he’s in increases, Harry begins to truly understand what Dumbledore intended him to do. He realizes, almost at the last minute, that his own life will have to be sacrificed in order for Voldemort to truly be vanquished. Filled with love for his friends, he willingly gives his life so that they may live.

His last act of heroism, however, saves his life. He meets Dumbledore again in death, and Dumbledore answers many of his questions. He is given a choice to stay or to go back, and he chooses to go back and fight.

It’s all over between Harry and Voldemort with just one spell. Harry is left alive, the true master of the Hallows, and Voldemort is killed for good. He now understands more than he ever has about love, and life, and sacrifice, and in spite of the loss of many of his friends during the last battle, is grateful for the second chance he’s been given at life, and love.

B1. Probability

1. What if before Harry’s birth,

Page 13: Book Report in English

Professor Trelawney did not prophesies about Harry and Voldemort?

Perhaps, Voldemort would have gone after Neville Longbottom, who, aside from Potter would have the possessed the ability to defeat the dark lord as revealed by Bellatrix.

2. What if Harry’s mother was not able to protect him?

Most likely, the story would have ended then and there.

3. What if Severus Snape did not love Harry’s mother?

Maybe, Harry could have been killed earlier than expected, because no one had kept an eye on him, making the dark lord take over both the magical and non magical realm.

4. What if Harry chose death during the encounter in the Forbidden Forest instead of going back?

For sure, Neville Longbottom would have led the fight against the death eaters but Voldemort would still prevail.

5. What if Harry Potter did not search for the Horcruxes and he went to school during his seventh year instead?

Most likely, Voldemort could have not been defeated and he would be able to take over the Wizarding world.

6. What if Alastor Moody did not plan to transport Potter into a safer place?

Perhaps, George would have still his ear attached, and Moody did not die. But at the same time, Potter would have been killed and Voldemort killed all the “unpure wizards”

7. What if Severus Snape did not instruct Harry Potter to take his tears and place it on the Pensieve?

Harry would have not known why Severus Snape had been “that” way towards him. He would have never known about his mother nor the fact that Snape had protected him all these years.

B2. Suspense

Page 14: Book Report in English

1. What did the Elder Wand have in store for Harry Potter?

2. Why did Harry Potter enter a state of Limbo when Voldemort “killed” him?

3. Why did Harry Potter meet Dumbledore in that Limbo? Does it mean that Dumbledore could still be alive if he chose to?

4. What was Snape aiming at when he cut off George’s ear?

5. Why did Griphook(the goblin) leave Harry Potter and his friends stuck in Bellatrix’s vault when in the first place he promised to help them?

6. How did Ron and Hermoine get into the Chamber of Secrets when in fact, neither of them was a parsel tounge?

B3. Climax

The climax of the story was when Harry Potter and Voldemort fought for the last time. During this part, Voldemort tried to kill Harry Potter with the “Aveda Kedavra” curse, however instead of the Harry Potter being killed, the curse backfired and killed Voldemort instead.

B4. Movement of the Story

The story started with Potter being transported from Privet Drive. It was then followed by a series of rising actions, when the search for the Horcrux began then later on followed by inclining series of events about the life of Albus Dumbledore. After those events, a climax took place when the battle happened and was decided by a clincher of Voldemort dying and the wizards rejoicing for their freedom.

C.Characters and Dialogue

“Don’t pity the dead, Harry. Pity the living and most of all those who live without love” –Albus Dumbledore

“But this is touching, Severus,” said Dumbledore seriously. “Have you grown to care for the boy, after all?”  “For him?” shouted Snape. “Expecto Patronum!”From the tip of his wand burst the silver doe: She landed on the office floor, bounded once across the office, and soared out of the window.

“Here lies Dobby, a free elf.” – Engraved on Dobby’s grave

“Mudblood, and proud of it!”- Hermione Granger

Page 15: Book Report in English

“I don't think you're a waste of space”. –Dudley Dursley

“Wit beyond measure is man's greatest treasure.” – Rowena Ravenclaw’s diadem

“The wand chooses the wizard, that much has always been clear to those of us who have studied wandlore.” –Ollivander

“The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.” –Engraved on Potters’ grave

“We're all human, aren't we? Every human life is worth the same, and worth saving.” -Kingsley Shacklebolt

“You have permitted your friends to die for you rather than face me yourself. I shall wait for one hour in the Forbidden Forest... One hour ...” – Lord Voldemort

D. Scenes that would be effective on the stage

The scene when Harry Potter was transported from Privet Drive to the Burrow.

The scene when the trio looked for the Horcurxes and when Ron was deceived by Salazar Slytherin’s locket and he was about to destroy it.

The scene when Bellatrix was torturing Hermione at the Malfoy Manor and Dobby helped them.

The scene when the trio knew about the Deathly Hallows and the tale of the 3 brothers.

The second wizarding war and Voldemort’s and Harry’s confrontation in the Forbidden Forest.

E. Theme or General Idea

The story has many themes which include: Remembering the Dead, Forgiving and giving second chances, Friendship and Love, Heroism, Good vs. Evil, Social Status, Loyalty, Pride and Prejudice, War, and Feminism. Aside from the themes mentioned, the general idea of the story is about Harry Potter’s greatest sacrifice to save everyone.

F. Beginning and Ending

Page 16: Book Report in English

The story begins when Harry Potter was transported form Privet Drive in order to be protected and taken far away as much as possible from Lord Voldemort. It ends with Harry Potter defeating Lord Voldemort during the second wizarding war and an epilogue 19 years after the dark lord’s defeat.

G. Contrast

The order of the Phoenix tried to keep Harry Potter safe from Voldemort all these years hoping that he will be their greatest hope, in contrast, the Death Eaters had been hunting down Harry Potter in order to give him to Lord Voldemort and for Potter to die.

H. Clearness, Force and the Beauty of the Style

The events in the story were arranged in way that it would keep the reader into getting “lost” into the magical world of Harry Potter. Every page, there would always be a mysterious plot, a threat that there might be a change of event or a twist which makes the reader literally beg for more. This style of JK Rowling, had captured the entire beauty of being a child and believing in magic. It also gives the reader the lasting “goose bumps” effect that upon hearing the word “Harry Potter” or “Lord Voldemort” he would immediately react into it.

H1. Humor

The scene during the “seven Potters” when Hermione said “you look much tastier than Crabbe and Goyle then Ron looked at her was funny because it implies that Ron had placed a malicious meaning into it and got jealous. The other humorous scene was when even at near death George Weasley still managed to make a joke about his state which alters the mood of the family making it a little bit easier to bear.

III. The Best Part of the Story

There are many parts in the story that I can consider as good scenes but perhaps, the best part of the story for me was when Harry Potter discovered the true identity and role that Severus played in the story. The fact that he continued to watch over Harry, even sacrificing his own life because Harry’s mother is his first love, was heart breaking. It even caused me to cry while reading that part, especially when Dumbledore asked Severus “all this time?” and Severus replied “…always”

IV. Reasons for Liking and Disliking the Story

I like the story mainly because I was attached to the story line ever since the first book came out. The story had been my “getaway” from stress.

Page 17: Book Report in English

After a hard day, Harry Potter never failed to cheer me up. It has given me that kind of comfort which reminds me never to forget about the kid in me because that child in me is what makes things if not easier, a little bit simpler to handle, after all, a child’s imagination is limitless. Also one of the reasons why I liked Harry Potter was that, it always leaves me to keep on thinking why such event happened and what is its connection in reality.

However, I dislike the fact that the Harry Potter era has ended. It feels like a part of my childhood had died, but none the less, in the words of Rowling, “Magic never dies” thus, the story of Harry Potter will continue to live in our hearts.

V. Comparison to Other Books

Harry Potter, in comparison to other books, I may say it is part of literature. It had created an era filled with magic just like how the renaissance authors did with their own masterpiece.

The book had also been compared to other literatures, in fact, Rowling had admitted that some of the events, she took the ideas from other great stories which somehow, makes the plot familiar.
