Hi everyone! I just wanted to you guys for inviting me to do a guest post. I’m so excitedto be here!
The teenage years are supposedly one of the times in your life where you have thehighest highs and the lowest lows. Of course I can’t really attest to this yet as still beinga teenager, I truthfully can’t begin to imagine what being an adult will be like, so I havenothing to compare it to. All I know is how I feel now and seeing firsthand the things myfriends and I go through. I wanted to show teenagers around me that it’s okay to feel

friends and I go through. I wanted to show teenagers around me that it’s okay to feelbad sometimes and that they are not alone in those feelings.
Around one out of every ten teenagers self-harm, but we as a society still haven’tstepped up to talk about what causes this. Though there are many triggers, the mostcommon is the inability to accept that it’s okay not to feel perfect all the time. Manyteenagers feel a swirl of different emotions, which they don’t understand. They feelconfused and even terrified by these strong feelings. To blot them out, they inflict harmupon themselves so that they only feel one, pure feeling–physical pain.
I wanted to show teenagers around me that it’s okay to feel bad sometimes and thatthey are not alone in those feelings. Around one out of every ten teenagers self-harm,but we as a society still don’t feel it is acceptable to discuss this. I think it’s important toopenly talk about self-harm in a way that promotes learning about and addressing thecauses of it, rather than condemning it. Using a story where the main character is acutter makes it easier to explore self-harm without boring readers by spewing facts andstatistics.

statistics.
Many people have asked me from where the red and white imagery came. When I’msick, like every other normal teenager, I find that Disney movies always make me feelbetter. One lazy afternoon when I was watching Disney movies, I thought it wasinteresting that the “evil” or plain “bad” character was always seen wearing black. Ithought it was odd that western cultures depict black as a scary color, oftensymbolizing death, while in eastern cultures white is typically used in funerals as asymbol for death. To me, the purity of white could mean the absence of feeling andhumanity, while red is messy, but human.
I find that when writing, I can easily get side-tracked and distracted…but I think that’sbound to be true when watching Disney movies becomes your “research”! I’ve foundthat the easiest way to keep me in my chair without using rolls of duct tape is to playmusic that fits the emotions that I’m trying to convey.
So without further ado, a snippet of my playlist for All That is Red:

I love how the lyrics and the song itself is a bit chaotic. It made me think of howconfusing emotions can be.

“You’re only as tall as your heart will let you be. You’re only as small as the world willmake you seem.” When writing All That is Red I would take breaks to watch this musicvideo. I just couldn’t get over the short bearded guy!

I loved the simple honesty on the lyrics of this song. I thought it worked well for theprotagonist coming to terms with herself and learning to feel okay with not being perfectall the time.

Even though I don’t normally listen to covers, I loved this cover by Birdy of Bon Iver’ssong. When I first heard this, I couldn’t believe that she was around my age. I thoughtthis fit the scene where the boy realized that he had been wrong and had made amistake in defying everyone.

Sadly, I couldn’t find a video for this song. I love the nostalgic feeling in the song. Iremember playing this song on repeat when I was writing the last few pages of thebook. It was a nice way to say goodbye to my characters and the world I created.
I also listened to:
