Within the field of cognitive psychology, one issue of theoretical debate concerns the
relationship between an event's temporal (e.g., rhythm, rate, total duration) and nontemporal
(e.g., sequence o f pitch intervals) information. Some argue these are jointly encoded into the
cognitive system, whereas others claim they are encoded in an independent fashion. This issue
was investigated in 2 experime nts that systematically manip ulated participants' attention to the
temporal and pitch properties of melodies and then examined participants ' subsequent
remembering o f these structural dimensions. The results indicate that the nature o f encoding is
suon gly dependent on the sU'ucmre of environmental events and the degree o f learning
experience. This relationship in turn has im plications for theories of both music cognition and
time estimation behavior.
O n e o f t h e m o s t g e n e r a l g o a l s i n c o g n i t i v e p s y c h o l o g y i s

Within the visual modality, the spatial dimension of events is
rather self-evident in that people and other objects move over
varying distances from one point to anoth er. Similarly, it s
generally w ell accepted that pitch relations form an analogous type
of structure within the auditory environment (Julesz & Hirsh, 1972;
Kubovy, 1 981 ; Marks, 1978 ). Pitch relations are categorized as
high o r low, can span different distances o ver successive intervals,
and for m a particular conto ur over a total time span (i.e. , the pattern
of ups and down s in pi tch).

computer with a Roland MPU-401 Midi interface unit. Sequences
of tones were amplified by a Kenwood KR-4010 receiver and
played over Koss-Pro 4AAA Plus headphones at a comfortable
listening level (approximately 60 dB SPL). The timbre of al l
melodies was that of a grand piano.

Recorded instructions informed participants of pattern presenta-
tion details and task requirements. For the initial learning phase,
participants were told the experiment involved a study of percep-
teal judgments and that they would be asked to rate a set of four
melodies on four different dimensions. In addition, different groups
of participants were instructed to attend to different aspects of the
melodies because they would later receive a memory test on these
dimensions. In particular, participants in the
pitch-a lone
condition
were told to at tend to the pitch properties of al l tunes, whereas
participants in the durat ion-alone condition were asked to attend to
their total durations. In the

condition, parficilnmts were
instructed to attend to both the pitch properties and the total
duration of all tunes, and participants in the
no-at tending
condition
were given no information at all about an upcoming memory task.
All participants then received the set of learning rials, i n which a
separate trial block was presented for each rating task and the

instructions fo r each task we re administered befo re the presentation
of fou r tr ia l s. On each t r ia l , a 1-s warning tone (C7, or C in the
seventh oc tave) preceded the presenta t ion of a melody by 2 s . The

that had been distributed to all participants. Tw o seconds after the
me lody ' s of fse t, th is sam e tune was presented again . Dur ing a 5-s

provide a ra t ing on a 10-point sca le by c i rc l ing an appropria te va lue

seemed a t a l l fami l iar and to be one they had heard in the pas t .
Ratin gs of predictability directed attention tow ard the pitch and
t iming qual it ies of each m elody; par tic ipants were a sked to judge
whether these seem ed very regular , such tha t i t was easy to t rack
the me lody and ant ic ipa te i ts fu ture course (1 =
very predictable),
or unpredictable in nature, su ch that i t was ve ry difficult to follow
the tune ' s ongoing and fu ture course . The th i rd task involved
pleasantness ratings and required participants to decid e wh ether
each melody was p leas ing to l i s ten to or avers ive in i t s sound
qualities (1 =
very pleasing).
Last , the ease-of - learning ra t ings
requi red part ic ipants to decide whether each m elody wo uld be easy
o r mor e d i ~ c u l t t o l e a rn a nd r e me m be r ( 1 = very easy). All
participants perfo rme d these tasks in the sam e order as outlined
above an d were then asked to m ake th is se t of ra tings a second t ime
with a separate re spon se booklet . A prev ious study (Boltz, 1992)
had sh own tha t th is degree o f learning exper ience w as suf f ic ient fo r
producing re la t ive ly accura te levels of dura t ion m emory.
Follo win g this initial phase, all participants wer e then given a
recal l task for melo dy dura t ion only . A han dout w as d is t ributed tha t
indica ted the name o f the par ticular melo dy tha t was to be reca l led
on each t r ia l. Dur ing a g iven t r ial , a 1-s warning tone (C7 ) was
played , and after i ts offset, participants we re asked to me ntal ly
imagine the dura t ion of the melody unt i l i t reaches i t s or ig ina l
endin g poin t. Participants were to indicate this ending point by a
press on a handheld push but ton which was automat ica l ly recorded
by the computer. Par tic ipants were ask ed to reca l l the dura t ion of
each o f the fou r melodies f rom the in i tia l learning phase on tw o
different block s of tr ials, and trials we re random ized both within
and between blocks .
Participants we re tested in grou ps of 3--4 individuals, and the
duration o f an entire experimental session was approx ima tely 45
min.

Method
Only those m ethodological differences from Experiment 1 are
described.
Participants and esign
The design was a 2 × 2 × 5 mixed factorial. All participants
listened to the same set of folk tunes from Experiment 1, which
varied in their degree of structural coherence (coherent or incoher-
ent). The two between-subjects variables were m elody set (A or B )
and the attended-to dimension o f a m elody s structure (duration
alone, rhythm alone, pitch alone, both pitch and rhythm, or no
attending).
Eighty studen ts, all nonmusicians, participated in the experiment
for course credit. Eight were randomly assigned to each of the 10
between-subjects conditions.
