BY GEORGE DICKIEHe’s still considered the “fastest man alive” – just not as fast as he once was.

And this week Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt will try to do what no man or woman has done in Olympic competition as he endeavors to sweep the 100-meter, 200-meter and 4x100 events for the third-straight Summer Games at the Rio Olympics beginning Sunday, Aug. 14, on NBC and other outlets.

The 29-year-old Bolt gave the crowds in Beijing a memory they won’t soon forget back in 2008 when he swept the three events, all in world record time. Four years later in London, he repeated the feat – though he didn’t set any speed records – to become the first to sweep all three events in consecutive Olympics.

“Well, it’d be nice to be able to slow down but still be the fastest man in the world,” says NBC studio host Dan Patrick, “so when somebody says ‘slowing down,’ he’s still faster than anybody else in the world. And once again, we’re going to see how he reacts to that knowing that there are younger guys – the margin of error is shrinking for him but to still be the guy to beat in those events is pretty remarkable.”

In the 100-meter event on Sunday, Bolt is certainly vulnerable. Coming off a hamstring injury, he’ll be up against a field that includes American Justin Gatlin, the 2004 Olympic champion in the 100 meter and the fastest man in 2014 and 2015; fellow countryman Yohan Blake, who owns the world’s second-fastest mark in that event; and Team USA’s Trayvon Bromell, the bronze medalist at the 2015 World Championships.

In the 200-meter on Thursday, Aug. 18, experts seem to agree that Bolt will likely take home gold against a field including Gatlin and Blake – assuming that he’s healthy.

“It’s still the most fascinating event I saw in London when he ran the 200 meters,” Patrick says, “and it’s one thing to see somebody on TV running fast. It was something completely different to be at the stadium at night and to watch him make that turn – and I was sitting right at the turn – and when he made the turn and was heading for home, then you saw a different speed. TV does not do him justice. And it didn’t last long. You know, it’s 20 seconds but man it was pretty incredible. It was very, very powerful.”

The 4x100-meter event on Friday, Aug. 19, could be where Bolt comes up short as Jamaica has one of its weakest relay teams in years. The Americans could have the advantage here.

CHRISHARRISONThe current season of “Bachelor in Paradise” is continuing the “Bachelor”-“Bachelorette” franchise, but what do you think about the numerous other shows that have tried a similar premise?Now, I can say this without any doubt ... this is probably the most ripped-off franchise and format in the history of television, because we’ve been doing it so long. You go back to “Joe Millionaire,” “Married at First Sight,” whatever; there’s been a thousand of them by now, on (broadcast) and cable.They’re all flashes in the pan, and they all fade away. Look at (Fox’s recent) “Coupled”; it has not been a success, by any stretch of the imagination. “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette,” for whatever reason, have struck a chord. I think we have gained and earned the trust of Bachelor Nation, and they stick with us, time and again. And that’s never taken for granted. We work our butts off to stay true to what we do.

What do you make of Lifetime’s scripted and award-winning take on the reality-dating genre, “UnREAL”? I probably should, but I just haven’t taken the time to watch it. I haven’t seen a full episode yet; I saw a bit of one. The greatest form of flattery is imitation, and to think that our (franchise) is so big that an entire scripted show has been created just about it ... .I mean, think about that in (terms of) the history of television. A show was created to emulate what we supposedly do. That’s pretty phenomenal when you think about it.

How was working with Bill Murray on the pilot episode of “Vice Principals”?How many people have gotten the opportunity to work with Bill Murray over the course of his career? He is an icon, he’s a national treasure and it was extremely, extremely intimidating to me initially because of how large he looms in my imagination.You know, I was born in 1971, so his movies really informed my generation and changed us. It’s like I know exactly where I was when I watched “Caddyshack” for the very first time, “Meatballs” for the very first time, “Ghost Busters.” “Stripes” is literally one of my favorite movies of all time. It’s as if they keep coming and coming and coming and the hardest part for me – and I was afraid this would happen and it did indeed happen – is that I couldn’t look at him with a straight face, man. I just laughed when he gave that signature Bill Murray look, and it’s just that thing that he has and it was one of the highlights of my career, really.

Was he as goofy on set as he is on camera?No, he’s got this – look, one of my favorite Bill Murray movies, the one that really spoke to me, is one that very few people reference and that’s “The Razor’s Edge.” I’m a huge Somerset Maugham fan and that’s the movie that I most wanted to talk to him about because I thought he was brilliant in that film. How do you balance your TV shows with a veterinary practice?It’s a real juggling act. I never intended to be on TV. It was nothing I ever planned on, it wasn’t anything I was aiming for. I didn’t audition for anything. I didn’t go to acting school or presenting school. I was quite happy being a vet in Sydney and by the beach there, and then from nowhere a TV opportunity came ... and it’s kind of all snowballed into what I do now, which is try to juggle a very bizarre schedule. There are no two weeks that are really the same all year. It’s quite bizarre.But in terms of how it happened, ... I was actually in a bar on a Friday night after a busy week at work. And they were taking forever to serve drinks and I got talking to a few people at the bar and they said, “What do you do?” I told them a few funny stories about what happened in the vet clinic that week. Anyway, there’s a guy the whole time standing behind me laughing and shaking his head. And he came up to me later on and said, “Come on, what do you really do?” ... And I said, “No, no, no. That’s what I really do.” And he said, “Look, if that’s really what you do, then here’s my card, call me tomorrow. I’ve got an idea for you.” And he was basically a media agent ...

What is the most dangerous case you’ve ever had to take on?I’ve been charged by a rhino. I’ve had to deal with an overly amorous bull elephant that I needed to (shoot with a) tranquilizer dart in the wild because in his desperate attempt to woo a lot of the girls, was basically destroying the local area, knocking down trees, knocking down houses and doing all sorts of everything. So I had to sedate him and give him a contraceptive injection, so that sort of curtailed his romancing a little bit.I’ve probably lost more blood in my 12 years of being a vet to Chihuahuas than any other animal. What are you reading?A book of short stories by Somerset Maugham, my favorite writer.

What do you usually eat when you’re at home?Everyone imagines that there’s a giant fermented possum in the middle of my dining room table every evening. I live in the upper Midwest in a leafy suburb with my wife and my son and several pets. The other night we made a farmer’s market salad with local lettuces and tomatoes, stir-fried okra and roasted new potatoes and a chicken that I put on the backyard rotisserie.

What did you have for dinner last night?I had a hamburger and French fries at a jazz club, listening to some friends who were performing in Minneapolis.

Where did you go on your last vacation?We went to Belize in March for my son’s school break, and we did five days with my 11-year-old in New York City in June, before he went to sleepaway camp.

No matter whether you’re returning to a favorite destination or visiting a city for the first time, your best source for a great dining experience could be sitting in the taxi seat in front of you, says the host of “Andrew Zimmern’s Driven by Food,” premiering Tuesday, Aug. 16, on Travel Channel.

Best known for his willingness to tuck into “bizarre foods” on his other shows, in this new eight-episode series Zimmern helps travelers expand their dining options by changing where they get their information.

“When you ask the doorman or the cab driver or the shopkeeper, ‘What’s good to eat around here?,’ you’re likely to get a much different answer than from a hotel concierge,” Zimmern explains. “I’m not anti-concierge. I’m just really bullish on all the information I get from people who are situated differently to get information.”

The series premiere finds Zimmern on his most recent visit to Rio de Janeiro. Thanks to guidance from three different drivers, he samples some of the freshest and most authentically Brazilian food this vibrant city has to offer.

Among the sites on his culinary itinerary are the city’s favelas, where Rio’s poorest citizens live. Once shunned due to crime and hygiene issues, many of these neighborhoods have been cleaned up and rendered more tourist-friendly.

“The reason I suggest that travelers go in there is that Rio, like other cities, has many glamorous restaurants, but all the poor people who come from greater Amazonia go to live in these favelas,” Zimmern says. “They’re the only places they can afford and they bring their native food with them.”

Zimmern also encourages travelers to ask locals specifically if they know of any home restaurants or otherwise under-the-radar eateries.

“Nearly all of the South American countries have them,” he says. “It’s part and parcel of the culture there, and it’s getting more and more popular in Europe and Asia. I just want to stimulate viewers’ minds to the notion that there are alternatives like these places.”

Future episodes feature London, Bangkok and Berlin among their destinations.

ANNIKA SORENSTAMAnnika Sorenstam, one of the greatest female golfers of all time, has multiple honors to her name, including 72 LPGA wins (plus another 18 international), 10 major championships, eight Player of the Year awards, $22 million in career winnings and enshrinement in the World Golf Hall of Fame.

But there is only one thing missing: an Olympic gold medal. And as women’s golf gets going for the first time in Olympic competition since 1904 in the Rio Olympics Wednesday, Aug. 17, on NBC and Golf Channel, the 45-year-old analyst says she was never once tempted to come out of the retirement she began in 2008 to compete.

“I would have loved the opportunity to represent Sweden in the Olympics,” she says. “It really would have been special, but I never considered coming out of retirement for it. I have moved on and don’t look back. I’m enjoying my young family and the various business ventures we have. Sweden has great young players who will carry the torch for our country. I am happy for this generation to have the opportunity.”

Sorenstam’s love of golf is lifelong but it wasn’t the only sport in which she participated growing up near Stockholm. In addition to playing soccer, she was also a nationally ranked tennis player and a good enough skier that she attracted the attention of the coach of the Swedish national ski team.

But by age 12, she decided golf was for her and her parents encouraged her love of the game.

“My sister and I used to go to the course with my parents,” she says. “I remember riding their pull carts like a horse and getting ice cream at the turn. We had a great time and looking back I think it was smart of my parents to make the golf course somewhere that we associated with family and fun.”

For proof that being on a popular series can help your other projects, ask Justin Baldoni.

Even before starting his run as Rafael on “Jane the Virgin,” the actor was producing and hosting an online documentary series titled “My Last Days,” in which terminally ill individuals talk about their situations and experiences. The venture is now getting broadcast-network exposure with new episodes, which The CW will air two per night in hour-long installments Wednesday through Friday, Aug. 17 through 19. It also has inspired the launch of a new digital channel, CWGOOD, which will offer extended versions of the episodes.

“It’s been a pretty miraculous journey,” reflects Baldoni, who has made “My Last Days” through his production company Wayfarer. “I had left the acting business because, frankly, I had a really hard go of it. My first love was always creating and telling stories, and I left acting to do ‘My Last Days,’ this little documentary show that would possibly air to no one on YouTube. I dedicated my life for over a year to telling the stories of these incredible people who were giving me their most valuable asset in their last days ... which was their time.”

Among those profiled in “My Last Days,” found from coast to coast through such means as blogs and social-media searches: cystic fibrosis patient Claire, who created a foundation to support others with that condition; gospel singer Kendrick, whose rare form of sleep apnea hasn’t kept him from trying to finish his fourth album; Kat, determined to keep living life on her own terms despite stomach cancer; and “Darth Vader,” whose leukemia hasn’t deterred him from completing numerous half-marathons and Tough Mudder competitions.

“It was a service, it was about love,” Baldoni maintains of making the show. “it wasn’t about anything else except how we could tell these stories and, hopefully, help people fall in love with these souls who are dying ... in an attempt to see the areas of their own lives that they can improve, and how blessed they are. If these people are able to forgive people and find happiness despite these insurmountable obstacles, why can’t we do that? If anything, the show is about hope and that anything is possible.”

Originally, the second iteration of “My Last Days” was aimed for the digital network CW Seed. Rick Haskins – The CW’s chief of marketing and digital programs – became a major champion of the program, and Baldoni says, “We both believed that the purpose of media was to do good, and we just started talking and going deep. After Season 1 of ‘Jane the Virgin,’ I went off and shot these documentaries. Originally, they were supposed to be short, 10 to 12 minutes; the stories were so good, though, I ended up making 35-minute documentaries. We were so blown away by these stories, we couldn’t cut them down. (CW president) Mark Pedowitz said, ‘People really need to see them.”’

As it turned out, one person showcased in “My Last Days” found out they weren’t terminal. Baldoni prefers that viewers discover which one by watching: “She was the one we felt was closest (to dying). She had a surgery and the doctor said, ‘You know what? You’re no longer terminal.’ Another just found out her brain cancer is back, so we’re trying to find ways to help her. These people become family. There’s no difference between them and a cousin or a brother for us. Every time there’s a loss ... I should be going to years and years of therapy.”

Baldoni is getting an opportunity to move “My Last Days” into the feature-film realm, since a book by one of the original subjects is being turned into a Warner Bros. movie that Baldoni will produce and direct. He readily notes he may be calling on the talents of his “Jane the Virgin” comrades and other colleagues for the film: “Oh, yeah. I’m so excited to actually start shooting the movie, because I have many dear friends I can’t wait to give jobs to.”

Treat Williams finds a new TV home in ‘Chesapeake Shores’

BY JAY BOBBIN Treat Williams knows something about playing a flawed father figure.

He did so for four seasons on “Everwood,” and he’s had other opportunities since, on “White Collar” and “Against the Wall” and in his recurring role as Severide’s (Taylor Kinney) dad on NBC’s “Chicago Fire.” He tackles another such character, and one with even a bit more edge, as the Hallmark Channel drama “Chesapeake Shores” – inspired by a book series by Sherryl Woods – premieres Sunday, Aug. 14.

A mainstay of the title Maryland town, Williams’ new alter ego Mick O’Brien perpetually clashes with his similarly stubborn businesswoman daughter Abby (Meghan Ory, “Once Upon a Time”), a divorced mother of twins who returns home for a visit. Her stay becomes series-suitable longer, though, after she runs into her ex-flame Trace (Jesse Metcalfe, formerly of “Desperate Housewives” and “Dallas”) and realizes her hometown might be a better environment for her to connect more deeply with her young daughters.

“I’m very excited about this,” Williams says. “One of the most exciting things is that we have a wonderful writer, (‘Judging Amy’ and ‘Chicago Hope’ alum) John Tinker, who oddly enough grew up in the Connecticut town across the river from me at about the same time. And the cast is bonding, and I think we’re all starting to figure it out.”

Williams maintains “Chesapeake Shores” has “a completely different dynamic” from “Everwood,” citing Mick as “a very tough, complex guy who is just crazy for his children and not quite able to show it in the right way. I think it’s going to be an interesting ride. There are moments when you think, ‘This guy’s too tough on his kids,’ then it’s revealed that he’s completely devoted to his family and would do anything for them.”

Also prominent in the “Chesapeake Shores” cast: Barbara Niven as Megan, the wife who left Mick and her family, but returns at his behest after almost 20 years; and Diane Ladd, playing O’Brien family matriarch Nell. Williams has a special connection to Ladd, since one of his most esteemed movies – the 1985 drama “Smooth Talk” – cast him opposite her daughter, Laura Dern.

“I adore her,” he says of Ladd, “and our stuff together gets better and better as the show progresses. Diane is one of the last of a breed, the Actors Studio-trained actors. She was having flirtations with Marlon Brando back in the day, and she was married to Bruce Dern, of course. She’s just a wonderful addition to the cast, and I’m very honored to have her in it.”

Apart from the television career that also saw him guest-star on CBS’ “Blue Bloods” last season, “Prince of the City” and “Hair” veteran Williams (who remains close to many of


his “Everwood” co-stars) remains committed to his work on stage and in film. He intended to star in a summer staging of “Man of La Mancha” before production on “Chesapeake Shores” was moved up, and he played the title role in the recent movie “The Congressman.”

Having finished two more films and heading to Italy soon to make another, Williams doesn’t know when or if “Chicago Fire” will call again, but he notes he’s always ready for it: “I have felt so welcomed. I wasn’t treated as though I were a visitor, I was immediately embraced as a member of the cast. I don’t know if they’ll call back, but if they do, I’ll jump. It’s a great group of guys.”

BY JAY BOBBIN If Humphrey Bogart had a lot of meaning to Tiffany Vazquez before, he surely has even more now.

The newest and youngest member of Turner Classic Movies’ permanent hosting team that also includes Robert Osborne (who’s been on a medical leave) and Ben Mankiewicz, the winner of the channel’s 2014 Ultimate Fan Contest now has Saturday afternoons as her domain there – so she introduces several Bogart classics during “his day” in TCM’s annual “Summer Under the Stars” festival on Aug. 20. Included are “Passage to Marseille,” “Dark Passage,” “Key Largo” and the film many consider to be the actor’s greatest, “Casablanca.”

“On the one hand, it was very nerve-racking,” the pleasant Vazquez allows of doing those segments, “because it’s TCM, and out of all the classic stars, the most classic is arguably Humphrey Bogart. And arguably his most classic film is ‘Casablanca’ … but at the same time, TCM has played it so many times, it’s not like it’s ‘all me.’ There have been so many intros to it, I figured, ‘Hmm. Maybe it’s just a rite of passage.’ And every classic film fan knows ‘Casablanca.’ It’s almost a ‘comfort film’ for us.”

On a broader scale, Vazquez says she appreciates Bogart for his “balance of toughness and a little bit of softness. I’ve always loved his voice, and I like him in his personal life, too. There’s that story where Dorothy Dandridge moved into his and Lauren’s (Bacall) neighborhood, and neighbors were protesting and saying she had to move out. And he basically made everyone change their minds. The minute I heard that story, I knew I liked him.”

With her longtime love of movies, Vazquez knew she wanted to be involved in that world somehow. After earning a graduate degree (her second one) in cinema studies from New York University, she hesitated to pursue directing and/or screenwriting because “I didn’t know if I had something to say … but after a while, I realized that I loved films in a way that I wasn’t just a fan. I got incredible emotional responses from films that I don’t think a lot of my friends did.

“I wanted to live in a lot of these movies, and I was incredibly touched that someone who made a movie before I was born – or before my mother or grandmother were born – could make something that would affect me very deeply, and that would be around for me to see years and years later.” Thus, Vazquez admits that when she got the invitation to return to TCM on a weekly basis, “I definitely cried. I hadn’t expected that.”

In her full-time job, Vazquez heads the film-content department at the online search-engine company GIPHY, and the native New Yorker muses that her co-workers there are “fine” with her very visible TCM role. In handling four movies each Saturday, she’ll have chances to present many more, and she admits there are certain ones she’s looking forward to talking about.

“I was able to pick ‘Rebel Without a Cause,’ the first one I introduced in June, and I was very excited about that. I’d love to introduce ‘West Side Story,’ ‘Cabin in the Sky’ and ‘Stormy Weather,’ which has one of the Nicholas Brothers’ great dance scenes. I would love to talk more about Lena Horne and anything she’s ever done. I’d love to talk about anybody, but people who had to struggle and remained true to themselves are amazing to me.

“There’s always going to be something new to say about a movie,” Vazquez concludes. “That’s why TCM exists.”

As the closing weekend of Summer Olympics begins on Friday, Aug. 19, NBC will give the non-sports part of that night to a “preview” of Season 2 of the America Ferrera-starring sitcom (which begins its sophomore round in earnest Thursday, Sept. 22). Appropriately, the story is Olympic-themed: “Saturday Night Live’s” Cecily Strong guest stars as a medal-winning gymnast and idol of big-box store employee Amy (Ferrera), with actual gold medalists Apolo Anton Ohno, Tara Lipinski and McKayla Maroney appearing as themselves.

“It’s amazing to get this much support and faith in the show from NBC,” friendly “Ugly Betty” Emmy and Golden Globe winner Ferrera says of the extra “Superstore” airing. “It’s an opportunity to get to do some fun stuff, a great match for the world that we’ve built in the show for something that’s so universally celebrated to be the theme of one of our episodes.”

Also a producer of “Superstore,” Ferrera notes the Olympic tale stands apart from the way Season 1 left the characters, most of whom had walked off their jobs to protest a situation linked to the Cloud 9 store’s lack of paid maternity leave. “We will be picking up from that place in the season premiere,” she vows. “This is just a fun teaser before we get back to ‘programming as scheduled.’ This is just a little bonus. Actually, a big bonus.”

The cast and crew of “Superstore” have had some time to plan out their return, since they received their Season 2 renewal in February, well before the traditional May announcement of network plans for the next TV year. “It’s very nice to know that you’re coming back,” Ferrera confirms. “That we could start getting to work in terms of breaking the stories and writing the episodes was really helpful.”


For one night only, ‘Superstore’ has an Olympics sale

As she delves back into “Superstore,” Ferrera – who also had a recurring role on “The Good Wife” and will be a celebrity correspondent on the Epix series “America Divided,” premiering Sept. 30 – is winding down a memorable summer that encompassed a June reunion with many of her former “Ugly Betty” colleagues at the ATX Television Festival in Austin, Texas.

“I am not someone who likes to let go of people I love,” she says, “and my ‘Ugly Betty’ cast is family to me. While we all see each other all the time in different groups of people, we had this amazing opportunity to all come together. It felt like a day hadn’t passed since we were shooting the show, and that was really, really special.

“I was at the ATX Festival doing the ‘Betty’ reunion and also a ‘Superstore’ panel,” Ferrera adds, “so at one point, both of my casts were together. It was really overwhelming to realize that I’ve had such fortune getting to work on shows I love, with people who are so extremely talented.”

Defending champ returns for NASCAR’s night race


The NASCAR regular season is winding down, and with just five races to go before the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship begins, drivers continue to vie for position as the Bass Pro Shops NRA Night Race airs Saturday, Aug. 20 on NBCSN. Among those drivers is Joey Logano, who defends his 2015 victory under the lights at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Logano is holding steady in his contention for the Chase. He really turned it on at this time last season, winning at Bristol and on the road course at Watkins Glen in New York two weeks prior, but after winning all three races in the Contender Round of the Chase he came up short in the Eliminator Round and did not compete in the final Championship race.

At press time Logano has had two wins in 2016, the All-Star race and a win at Michigan in June. Eight top-five finishes and an average finish of 11.7 have kept him near the top of the standings. After finishing sixth at the Daytona 500 he would experience two DFNs in April, during which time he also finished tenth at Bristol.

The steep, half-mile concrete oval at Bristol remains one of the classic racing tracks on the NASCAR circuit. Seating 165,000 spectators it is considered a true amphitheater, and the largest one at that, for racing and other events, including football games. It’s been a leading stock car track since 1961.

Who ya gonna call? Well, that’s easy.

Unless you’ve been on Mars for the last year or two – and even there, you’d probably have heard about this – there’s a new “Ghostbusters,” this time an all-female team of fighters of the supernatural.

They’re played by Melissa McCarthy and (not unlike the first time) several veterans of “Saturday Night Live,” those now being Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. Their mission is the same one we’ve known about fighting ghosts for the past 30-plus years: Be on time, and don’t get slimed.

Each of the main characters has her expected quirks, but how those work in concert is what makes or breaks “Ghostbusters.” Think back to how well Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver and company played off each other – and with the notable absence of the late Harold Ramis, most of those actors have cameos here, so you don’t have to think too hard. While that’s a predictable move, it’s also a chancy one, since it immediately invites comparison.

McCarthy and McKinnon play the initial partners in the new spectre-erasing business, with Wiig as a more strait-laced associate who joins then, with Jones as the eventual fourth teammate who brings Transit Authority knowledge and experience to the effort.

The ladies give it a game try (along with Chris Hemsworth, adding to the story’s gender reversal as their secretary), but it doesn’t come with the ease it did back in 1984 ... which is not to say there aren’t funny moments, and director Paul Feig gives Jones a lot of them, but McKinnon makes many of her own just facially (as she’s done so often on “SNL”).

Still, this “Ghostbusters” is much more mannered than you might expect for the talents involved. Feig is the filmmaker who

yielded “Bridesmaids” and several of the other raunchier comedies of recent years, but it’s likely that he’s kept things tamer here both as a tribute to the original movie and to have it accessible to a wider audience (translation: “Ka-ching!” at the box office).

Having a property as valuable and beloved as “Ghostbusters” is a catch-22 for a studio. It’s worth revisiting, but you don’t want to do it in such a radical way that it’s off-putting to those who revere the still-popular original. Feig, co-writer Katie Dippold (who also worked with him and McCarthy on “The Heat” and their cast have walked that line successfully, but to the degree that you sometimes wonder why there even had to be a remake.

In the end, the new “Ghostbusters” is still ghostly, but not ghastly.
