    Banking changes improveaccess tohomeownership

    Even though prices are rising,

    the prospect of home ownership

    hasbeenbroughtcloser formany

    more South Africans over the

    past fewmonths, thanks to some

    exciting shifts in bank lending

    practices.

    These include declining deposit

    requirements and increases in both

the number and size of home loans

    beingapproved. Theireffectsarere-

vealed in the latest statistics from

    BetterBond, SAs biggest mortgage

    origination group.

These figures show that the aver-

    age percentage of home purchase

price required as a deposit when

    lenders are considering home loan

    applications has dropped from a

two-year high of 23,3%, reached in

February this year, to just under

    16% currently.

    In addition, notes group chair-

man Rudi Botha, the average ap-

    proved bond amount is now8,3%up

year-on-year and at its highest level

since July 2011. These two factors,

    combined with the low interest

    rateswecontinue to enjoy, aremore

    than compensating at the moment

for higher property prices, and are

    thus also bringing home ownership

within reach again for many South

    African families.

This is clearly reflected, he says,

in the fact that the average house-

    hold income required to purchase

the average home is the same now

    (R44000amonth)asitwas12months

ago, even though the average home

price has increased by 10,9% in that

    time to R918 000.

    The BetterBond group statistics,

which cover aquarter of all residen-

    tial mortgage bonds being regis-

tered in the Deeds Office and in-

    clude applications to, and bond

grants from, all the major lending

banks in SA,also show that applica-

tions from first-time buyers are on

    the increase again, following a

slump in the nine months to end-

    March.

    First-time buyers accounted for

    39%of all bondapplications in July,

which is still some way off the 45%

mark reached a year ago, but a con-

    siderable improvement on the 35%

    low recorded in March.And here

too, the big motivator has been the

banks decision to slash deposit re-

    quirements from an average 14,6%

of home purchase price inMarch to

    just 7,9% currently.

    Botha cautions, however, that

while the banks may be on a drive

    now to increase secured lending

such as home loans which are a

lot less risky for them than unse-

    cured personal loans, overdrafts

    and credit card balances their

    credit granting criteria are still

    very strict. Potential borrowers

are thus well advised to apply

    throughamortgageoriginator such

as BetterBond, which will employ a

    multiple submission process to dif-

ferent lenders in order to give them

    the best chance of success.

Verkoop nou of wag vir prysstygings?

Met die verbetering in die eiendoms-

om die tydsberekening reg te kry en

    eienaars moet ook die geleentheids-

koste om in nhuiswat niemeer aan

hul behoeftes voldoen of waar hulle

nie meer wil woon nie, in gedagte

    fessionalracingdriver.Stationednear theSil-

verstone race track in the UK, Oldfield now

shares a house with other winners of various

GT Academy events, including winners from

Germany, Belgium, Qatar, Russia and the

United States, and is now on the rise to racing

    stardom.

Past winners of GT Academy have gone on

to race at Le Mans and, says Oldfield, there

are high hopes for the future. LeMans is the

ultimate for any racing driver and I hope to

one day find myself on the grid. I visited the

24 Hours of Le Mans event and to see it all

in real lifewasexceptional its thehalo event

    of international motorsport.

A former motoring journalist at topCar

magazine, Oldfield also remarks that he en-

tered GT Academy to win it from the very be-

ginning. I remember racing Lucas Ordoez

    apastGTAcademywinnerwhohas finished

on the podium at Le Mans at the media

launch last October and I thought if I could

beat him in karting I might be able to win GT

Academy and join him on the international

stage if I put my mind to it.

Johan Kleynhans, Director of Sales, Mar-

keting and Aftersales at Nissan South Africa,

says: We are of course extremely proud of

    Ashleywhohasdoneastellar jobof represent-

for him in the future. He exhibited the right

    qualities for an international motorsport

driver from the beginning and we have faith

that he will take all the valuable skills he is

learning along the way to great heights with

    Nissan in motorsport.

GT Academy is an incredible concept and

brings an entirely new angle to motorsport

something only Nissan is doing. With such a

wide spread of talent available but the finan-

    cial implications that international motor-

    while also showcasing future

    smart technologies.Whileyouwill

never see this car on the road key

    design elements and innovations

    will be applied to forthcoming

    Ford vehicles, says Ford South

    Africa marketing manger, Gavin

    Golightly.

The new global design DNA has

    provided the companys world-

wide design teams with a common

framework to guide the creation of

    new products, enabling them to

shape a coherent family of distinc-

tive vehicles sharing the same fun-

    damental design character.

The Ford Evos Concept was con-

ceived as a dramatic fastback con-

    cept, combining a striking new

    profile with innovative propor-

    tions. Attention-grabbing lines

conceal a unique new format, with

    a four-door, four-seat layoutwhich

    combines dynamic appearance

    with surprising practicality. With

the length of a typical C-car, but

with width of a CD-car, the Ford

    Evos Concept has a powerful,

    sporting stance.

    The concepts spectacular

    hinged gullwing-style doors, both

    front and rear, provide outstand-

    ingaccess to the spacious four-seat

    cabin.

The role of the Ford Evos Con-

cept is to give a clear message

about where Ford is heading. Its

    modern design gives an indication

of Fords intent to continue to offer

a range of smart technologies, al-

    ready evidenced in South Africa

    with the award winning EcoBoost

    engines and SYNC system, he

    adds.

    The Ford Evos Concept inte-

cloud, the Evos extends the con-

nected lifestyle from home and of-

fice to the vehicle, providing new

    possibilities for personalization

    and adaptability of the car.

    Ford researchers have also in-

    corporated technologies to en-

    hance driver health and wellness

while at the wheel. Features such

    as the heart-rate monitoring seat

    and certified allergy-free interiors

connect to the cloud tomonitor the

physical state and workload of the

    driver,andadjustthedrivingexpe-

    rience accordingly.

    Ford Evos Concept also utilizes

the power of the cloud to under-

    stand driver behaviour and travel

patterns in order to make predic-

tions about destinations and to ad-

just the control strategies for the

    state-of-the-art lithium-ion plug-

    in-hybrid powertrain. Through

    understandingwhere the driver is

likely to go, Evos can intelligently

    switch between running on bat-

tery or engine power in order to

use the least amount of energy for

    any situation.

The Ford Evos concept gives us

an insight into the future of Ford

    products and the exciting design

and smart elements that we can

look forward to. I have no doubt

that the South African public will

be eager to view the Evos Concept

    first hand and the Johannesburg

    International Motor Show taking

    place in October, concludes Go-

    MOTORPRESS

    The Volkswagen Sasolrac-

    ing Polo S2000 of Hergen

    Fekken and Pierre Arries

    took itspositiononthepodi-

    um on Saturday afternoon

as the duo completed a chal-

    lenging event to claim third

    place overall in the Toyota

    Cape Dealer Rally.

    I am pleased with Hergen

    and Pierres result at this

    event, says Mike Rowe, head

    of Volkswagen Motorsport.

Well done to them for over-

    coming very trying condi-

tions to achieve a good result.

    Congratulations are also due

to Gugu and Carl for their sec-

ond place in the S2000 Chal-

    lenge category. Another good

    result from them.

    Held over 10 stages and

    172 kms, the competitors

    faced two very different days

    of rallying; the drier condi-

tions of Friday giving way to

very wet stages as rain set in

    overnight.

    This did not deter Fekken

and Arries who used a con-

    servative strategy on Satur-

    day to ensure they steered

    clear of any potential trouble.

    Today we decided to play

    things a bit safe, says

    Fekken. While theother com-

    petitors were having trouble

    with fences and gateposts, we

    stayed away from those things

which seem to haunt us some-

times. It looked like we were

on pace for a fourth place fin-

    ish, but I thoughtwemight get

a third if we played it safe. We

did have a puncture in stage

eight, that cost us about a

minute and we also took late-

ness as well, but it wasnt

enough to stop us from mak-

    ing the podium.

    Henk Lategan and Barry

    White rallied their Volkswa-

    gen Sasolracing Polo S2000 to

    eighth place after competing

    under Super Rally rules on

    Saturday. An incident on-

stage in day one saw them

    with a damaged steering. Dur-

    ing the course of Saturday

    their performance kept get-

    ting stronger, to the point

    where they claimed the fastest

time in the final stage. Late-

    gan andWhite leave this week

for the Arb Rally in Austria

    on 20 and 21 September.

    The Volkswagen Sasolrac-

ing Polo Vivo S2000 of Gugu

    Zulu and Carl Peskin claimed

    secondplace in theS2000Chal-

    lenge category on Saturday,

    finishing fifth overall in the

    rally as well.

Stage one was not kind and

we were in 23rd position after

that, having to claw our way

back, says Zulu. It was very

    challenging and we had to

stick our necks out a bit, but

    we did well and finished

    strong.

    Representatives of the lo-

    cal distributor of FAW

    cars and light commercial

    vehicles, the Imperial

    Group, are very im-

    pressed with the soon-to-

    be-launched, entry level

    FAWV2hatchback after a

    local test programme of a

    pre-launch car which has

    been under way for the

    past six months.

    The attractively-styled

V2 will be the second pas-

    senger vehicle in our range,

where it will join the Sirius

    seven-seaterMPVandpanel

van, and we are looking for-

    ward to the introduction of

    the V2 hatchback in South

    Africa later this year, said

    the general manager re-

    sponsible for FAW passen-

    ger cars and light commer-

    cial vehicles in South Afri-

    ca, Pedro Pereira.

    We are hopeful of being

    able to introduce the new-

comer at a retail price below

    the R100 000 barrier, which

    will make it very competi-

tive in view of the fact that

it is fitted with a 1,3 F four-

    cylinder enginewhilemost competitors in

this segment have smaller capacity power

    units.

A pre-launch unit has been undergoing

a series of evaluations under local operat-

ing conditions and those people involved

have included a number of engineers from

    FAW in China.

    Johan Ackerman, the FAW passenger

    andLCV technicalmanagerwho is respon-

sible for the test programme, is delighted

    with the results andsaysnoproblemswere

experienced during a five-day trip of more

than 5 000 km which included a variety of

roads surfaces, mountain passes and sec-

    tions on gravel roads.

Ackerman says he was particularly im-

pressed by the roadholding and handling

as well as ride comfort with

    a fully-laden car and added

that the V2 was stable at

    highway speeds.

    The route went from Jo-

    hannesburg to Upington

and then on to Cape Town

with two days of sea level

    testing in theWestern Cape

    before travelling back to Jo-

    hannesburg.

    Fuel consumption was

very good at 6,1 F/100 kmas

    there were four occupants

    in the carand they travelled

    between 115-120 km/h

    when conditions permit-

    ted.

The tank range to an emp-

    ty 37 F tank was 562 km.

    FAW entered the local

    passenger and LCV market

at the beginning of the year

with the launch of the Sir-

    ius panel van and people

    carrier, first with a 1,3 F en-

gine and now with the op-

    tion of a 1,5 F power unit.

    We currently have a na-

    tional network of 22 dealers

    and the growingmodel line-

    up is resulting in increased

    interest in the FAW fran-

    chise.

    Most of our dealers are

    multi-franchise Imperial

    facilities.

We are currently in talks with several

interested parties and expect to open a few

more FAW outlets shortly, added the

    FAW executive, Pedro Pereira.
