Bogotá• Bogotá is the most populated city in Colombia• Population= 7,304,384 as of 2009• Has the largest land area in Colombia• In the Eastern Time Zone• It rains here just about every day• Court system closes the month of December for Christmas. • Government closes during the Holy Week.• Soccer is extremely popular.• Altitude is higher than 8,500 feet• One of the oldest cities in the western hemisphere• Bogotá has crazy traffic

Betty’s Place and Hotel Paris

• The Betty’s Place and Hotel Paris are two of the hotels in which family’s can stay when adopting children.

• Usually the families are from out of the area. Ex: If your family was living here in Minnesota,

you could stay in Betty’s Place or Hotel Paris when going to Bogotá to adopt your new child.

Food• One of the most famous soups in Colombia is the Ajiaco

Soup.• The Ajiaco Soup is a potato soup. Ajiaco soup usually

has bits of chicken, large chunks of corn on the cob, and 2-3 different types of native potatoes.

• This soup is usually served with heavy cream, capers, and avocados.

• Ajiaco is so heavy; it is usually considered a whole meal.• This is the most representative dish of Bogotá.

Food Cont.

• Some restaurants in the US are also in other countries• McDonalds is an example. There is a McDonalds in Bogotá,

Colombia.• There is also a Baskin-Robbins in Bogotà• Hot Chocolate with white cheese melted in it is a popular breakfast

food and Sunday lunch along with tamales.• Coffee and tea are always offered… even at a government

appointment.• Bread, pastries, and fancy cakes are popular.

Mimo’s and 4D

Stopping the ice cream truck guy to get some ice cream

• Mimo’s and 4D are both names of ice cream shops. You can also get frozen yogurt there. • These are a few of the many “hit” ice cream shops in Bogotá• Anything that has chocolate in it is very popular.• Fruit Ice Cream is also very popular. They have many fruit choices. For example :

Blackberries, guanabana, lulo, oranges, lime, and strawberries. They also have caramel and coffee flavors.

• Ice Cream shops are everywhere. So are guys pulling or riding bikes with ice cream carts attached.

What are Sunday’s like in Bogotá?

• Usually the government will close several streets so people can run, walk, bike, etc in the streets.

• Sundays are also church days. Many people in Colombia are Roman Catholic.

• Their faith is very important. It is even part of their government.

• Many malls are closed on Sundays but major malls are still open.

• Restaurants are still open and it is very popular to eat out on Saturdays and Sundays. Nice restaurants are very expensive.

Bogotá Gold Museum and Lake Guatavita.

Gold Museum contains the worlds largest selection of pre-Hispanic gold work.

Lake Guatavita is where the legend of El Dorado began as the Spanish came and tried to drain the lake to find all the gold pieces that the indians had thrown in the lake as sacrifices to the gods. There is still gold in the lake and the lake is now protected by the park service.

Lake Guatavita is not actually in Bogotá. It is located 35 miles north-east of Bogotá.

Bogota Botanical Gardens

• Is Colombia’s largest botanical garden• Also known as Jose Celestino Mutis Botanical

Garden • There are plants from every Colombian region,

altitude, and climate.• There are lots of native plants, birds, and

butterflies

Flowers• A dozen roses are sold for around $4

• Flowers are found just about anywhere- restaurants, houses, and lobbies

• One of Colombia’s main export

• You can find huge bouquets at grocery stores and people also sell them on street corners.

Park 93 and Zona Rosa

• Zona Rosa is Spanish. In English it means pink zone

• A Commercial and recreational park

• Bogotá’s most popular shopping, nightclub and restaurant areas

• Commonly known as hip, busy, and fun.
