Welcome

Bognor regis golf club is a private club, owned and run by its members, offering a special retreat to play our wonderful sport and a fine clubhouse to enjoy after your round.

our beautiful course stretches through the sussex countryside and offers you the opportunity of a great golfing challenge in an established scenic location.

our historic club dates back to 1892, while the current course was first played in 1922. Designed by the world-renowned architect James Braid and constructed by the equally well-respected fg Hawtree, it has stood the test of time.

the course stretches to more than 6,100 yards and offers a variety of challenges that even with the advances in golf club technology still provides a true test to all players, whatever their ability.

Visitors and societies are most welcome with prior arrangement by contacting the club. the services of our Pga Professional are open to everyone including lessons, custom equipment, and clothing.

the members and staff look forward to welcoming you in person in the near future.

History

the club was first formed in the winter of 1892 in the centre of Bognor regis, approximately one and a half miles from its current location. it was a nine-hole course of very basic lay-out.

in 1906 it relocated closer to its current location on land between Bognor and felpham. a feature of the ‘Hook lane’ course was the river rife, which claimed many a ball and created a side industry for the caddies, who retrieved, washed and re-painted them for re-sale in the clubhouse.

By the 1920s the fact that Bognor remained a nine-hole course was becoming an issue in attracting and retaining members and visitors. the club committee worked hard to find suitable grounds to relocate to and the Downview road site was ultimately chosen, the course being laid out by James Braid and constructed by f.g. Hawtree.

the new course opened for play on 1st July 1922, but the club decided not to market their new asset until the year after to allow it to mature. on 30th June 1923 the ceremonial opening took place, with over 300 people present to watch the first ball driven by sir William Bird, mP for chichester. the main event that day was an exhibition match between James Braid of Walton Heath and alec Herd of moor Park. Braid won the match 6&5 with a gross 72.

With the onset of World War ii just 12 holes were open for play to reduce labour costs and generate some income, much of the membership and staff having enlisted to military service. the ladies’ locker room was given over to the local Defence Volunteers (Home guard) to guard against enemy parachutists. a Bofors anti-aircraft gun occupied the area between

the 1st and 18th fairways (now the practice area), and piles were erected on the fairways to prevent the landing of german aircraft and troop-carrying gliders.

the end of the war bought happier times, and the fifties saw the birth of the mighty spreading chestnut tree which adorns the club emblem today. as small boys, ian and tony Pettie planted two conkers which they had gathered locally in slindon, one of which grew into magnificent tree visible from the clubhouse today.

the sixties brought Pro-celebrity tournament action to the club, with professionals including Henry cotton, neil coles and eric Brown, paired with notable amateurs including sean connery, David coleman and Bruce forsyth. the club held its first major professional tournament in may 1972 when it staged the John Player trophy, a qualifying competition for europe’s then richest tournament. the event attracted a strong international field, among them Peter oosterhuis, christie o’connor, Brian Barnes, max faulkener and spain’s manuel Ballesteros. ross Whitehead, Professional at moor Park, collected the £1,500 first prize.

several thousand trees have been planted over the last 50 years to add to the scenic beauty of the course, and comprehensive land drainage was added in the 80s and 90s. the course has also changed the running order of the holes over the years from the initial layout by Braid in the 1920’s. 07

The Course

the present course at Bognor was designed by James Braid and constructed by fg Hawtree. it measures more than 6,100 yards and offers numerous challenges of position, length, and carry over numerous obstacles.

Braid’s design principles evident on many of his other famous course creations can also be found here some examples of which include:

“four short holes all of a different type, two very long holes, two stiff carries from the tee, no bunkers directly in front of greens and finally the last three holes should all be of a good length, in order to induce a good finish to a well-contested match.”

in 1938 Bernard Darwin (grandson of charles Darwin), famed golf writer and player of considerable talent, visited Bognor and wrote about the course and location he found.

He said: “it was a charming, rustic spot with the wooded south Downs as a backdrop. the sense of flatness is entirely gone, the greens laid out in gently sweeping curves and humps and hollows and the bunkers representing a skilful bit of landscape gardening.”

little has changed since those days and we hope you find as much pleasure on our fairways and greens as Darwin did.

testament again to the original design, he offered a review on each hole, describing it then largely as we do today even with the advent of modern technology. yes, golfers in the 1930s debated driving the green on the Par 4 6th the same as many players do today! see the course tour later in this brochure for Darwin’s thoughts on every hole. 09

Take the Darwin Course Tour

the hole-by-hole guide written by golf writer Bernard Darwin in the 1930s is as relevant today as it was then. use it to learn his thoughts and to help you enjoy your visit to our course to the full.

Hole 1, 431 yards, par 4 - the first is a capital hole, with its narrow drive through a gap in the trees, and an equally narrow second shot bending to the left. Watch out to be too long from the tee, favour the left side to shorten the hole, but it will always be a long iron at least for the 2nd. take a par and know you are off to a great start, worse and take heart most others will do the same.

Hole 2, 198 yards, par 3 - the 2nd is less fierce, 198 yards long, it is a good short hole against the prevailing wind. there are bunkers to right and left, but the green is kindly and has something of a back wall, so that a well-struck ball may run pleasantly near the hole.

Hole 3, 321 yards, par 4 - for the 3rd we have the rife on our left and a fine large bunker on the right. the hole is 321 yards long - a comfortable drive and pitch - and not too difficult unless the greenkeeper is in diabolic mood and cuts the hole in the right-hand corner of the green.

Hole 4, 343 yards, par 4 - the 4th does not look difficult either, but it is something of a ‘flat-catching’ hole. it is 343 yards long and appears to need just two straightforward shots that should avoid the grosser forms of error, but let us not be impetuous. there is a little stream that comes inconspicuously winding its way into the right edge of the green, and the slightest slice will mean tragedy. “see how this river comes ever cranking in,” says Hotspur in Henry iV, and that is just what we shall say with an aggrieved air when we unexpectedly find our ball in that ditch.

Hole 5, 132 yards, par 3 - a little respite at the 5th, which is no more than 132 yards long. only a mashie-niblick shot but a good shot, too, with lone trees on either side as sentinels, some bunkers and not too big a green. this hole is one of the particular favourites of James Braid.

Hole 6, 286 yards, par 4 - the 6th will give the mighty driver his chance, but he must take a risk as well as hit a big shot. the hole is 286 yards long, and between the tee and the green stretches an avenue of willows. the orthodox play for the ordinary man is to drive straight down and then, turning to the left, pitch between a few pollarded willows through which there is a perfectly good view of the hole. that should suffice for a four and quite an entertaining four, but he who thirsts for threes and thrills, will go straight for the green over the highest of the willows and may carry them.

Hole 7, 469 yards, par 5 - the 7th at 469 yards long is quite a good long hole, dog-legged to the right with a very straight and narrow way up to the green, and regiments of bunkers on either side. reachable in two if you are feeling strong, a birdie might set you up nicely for the next couple of holes, beware the river is approaching!

Hole 8, 392 yards, par 4 - We draw closer to the turn at the 8th at 392 yards long, with a tee shot pregnant with possibilities of woe. We can play a straight cowardly short shot to the right, but then we cannot reach the green in two. the bold shot and the profitable one is to carry the rife, cutting off just as big a corner as ever we dare and so home with an iron onto a green of deceitful humps and hollows. it will be a good four if we do it.

Hole 9, 559 yards, par 5 - a good sound [par] five, for there is still the rife lurking for us on the left and rough and uneven ground for the slicer. Be brave and aim for the tall tree with a touch of fade, then finding the right side of fairway leaves a medium iron to the green. 11

Hole 10, 162 yards, par 3 - a quaint little hole tucked away in a corner. Behind the green is a formidable hedge, and we shall probably be so frightened of it that we shall pitch timorously short with the big bunker in front of the green.

Hole 11, 440 yards, par 4 - the next three holes go up, down and then up again in rather a narrow space, and there is a little family likeness between them. each has, however, some characteristic of its own. at the 11th you will find a green narrowing somewhat to a point. However before you can enjoy that vista two shots of considerable length must be played, special care being taken to avoid the two large trees on the right side of the fairway.

Hole 12, 391 yards, par 4 - the 12th will probably be christened ‘the gully’ from the way in which the green lies like a gorge between hills that are crowned by sandy chasms. However, to enjoy that view first you must find the green in two, not an easy task though favouring the left side of fairway from the tee gives you the best possible route home, just be sure not to dabble with the ditches just where you think a good shot might land.

Hole 13, 343 yards, par 4 - the 13th has a very picturesque archipelago of bunkers in front of the green, the front-most bunker playing a cunning role in deceiving the player into coming up short of the green. Be sure to take enough club to find the putting surface.

Hole 14, 335 yards, par 4 - if we like to go for a break-neck carry over a ditch we can make this short hole shorter still, but we had much better play, cannily, away to the left, and so comfortably home with an iron.

Hole 15, 217 yards, par 3 - a different type of hole altogether, what one may call a “long-shot” hole. a good shot with a wooden club should get there, but it must be a good one because there are bunkers that will catch impartially either a long crooked shot or a short crooked shot. all varieties of mistakes have been thoughtfully catered for. 13

Hole 16, 345 yards, par 4 - to the left of the tee, you now approach a little pool overhung with branches. it is called “the Wish” and here, once a year on a moonlit night, the village girls were supposed to come to look into the water for the faces of their future husbands. it must be admitted that today those faces would be obscured by duck-weed, but it is an engaging tradition and an engaging spot. if we were to look upon the waters of “the Wish” for the fate of our next tee shot, the result might be alarming, for it is as good and terrifying a tee shot as i have seen for some time. on the left waiting for a hook is a hedge and a ditch. on the right is a bunker and lone trees impede forward progress. the shot is not really as bad as it looks, but it wants some playing. so does the second, an iron shot on to a green in something of a water-hazard hollow, with bunkers on either hand and water to be negotiated in front. altogether a capital hole.

Hole 17, 337 yards, par 4 - the 17th gives us plenty of room for our drive. if we hit a good one, we play an iron shot a little to the right (for the hole, like a good many others, is slightly “dog-legged” onto a big wavy green guarded to the right and left. accuracy not distance is imperative for the 1st and 2nd shots, the deceptive green means all but the shortest of putts are far from straightforward.

Hole 18, 420 yards, par 4 - and now we are close to “the Wish” again with only one more hole to play and probably a wish for lunch. it is a good, long-driving, straightforward hole that we end with, rough grass on the left, and a diagonal range of grassy knolls and bunkers on the right and a particularly nice wavy green to putt on when we get there.

We are proud to have matthew kirby as our resident Pga Professional at Bognor regis. matthew has been with us a number of years having previously been assistant professional at royal ashdown and West sussex golf clubs.

Whether it’s the golf basics, tweaking a swing, advice on equipment, custom-fitting a new driver, coaching juniors, helping with a ruling, or simply taking a green fee, Pga pros do pretty much anything and everything in golf.

Perhaps best of all - they’re there to help you, the amateur golfer - squeeze the most out of this wonderful game that both tantalises and frustrates in equal measure.

matthew is a focal point of the golf club, a friendly face to visitors and source of advice and help to members. He maintains a well-stocked Pro shop that features clubs from leading manufacturers such as Ping and taylormade, clothing from green lamb, lyle and scott, glenbrae and under armour and sunderland waterproofs. the price on equipment is always competitive and this is combined with the expert buying advice that sets your local Professionals apart from the internet.

this consists of a five-hole playing lesson looking at your strengths, weaknesses and course management, followed by a lesson focussing on the areas of your game that require immediate attention and improvement.

this session can take up to two hours and is very reasonably priced, so why not take advantage of this great offer and take the guesswork out of bettering your game. We can also offer swing analysis with our state-of-the-art launch monitor.

Practice Facilities

While some might argue that golf is never a game that can be totally mastered even by the best players who earn their living from the sport, there is no dispute that anyone can get better with a little time and application and the right practice facilities.

Here are Bognor regis we are able to offer a range of areas where you will find our members diligently working on improving their game.

the most noticeable is the magnificent practice putting green next to the clubhouse and behind the 18th green. so inviting is it, that after completing a round on a sunny day you might find it a tough choice between sitting outside with a refreshing drink or opting for some worthwhile practice with the flat stick. there is no club rule that says you cannot do both.

chipping greens and a short 3-hole ‘course’ provide further opportunities for tightening up the short game, the fastest way any high-handicap golfer will lower their scores.

the long game is not overlooked, with a grass practice range between the 17th and 18th holes where members can hit their own balls.

for those short on time, there are warm-up nets next to the Pro shop to get rid of the cobwebs before taking to the course.

Joining a private club such as ours offers you a number of extra benefits. all members are issued their own bag tag to clearly recognise your status within the club. a membership card bearing the club crest is issued that allows access to our facilities and cashless discounted purchases through our bar and restaurant. a personal club diary is printed and given to you, so you can plan your golf and social life simply and contact other members easily.

Communications Benefits

get access to private members’ content on the club’s website, with newsletter updates via e-mail and online telling you the latest goings-on at the club.

Bognor is a proud user of the club 2000 system to manage our handicap and competition results. members use the automated “Player score input” (or Psi) to complete their competitive rounds, which are automatically collated with all the other scores. the ‘How Did i Do’ website service is also provided. this system calculates your handicap and will automatically publish the latest results, handicap list and course statistics when each competition is closed and results printed. these can even be delivered to your mobile phone!

your congu-approved handicap is simply maintained and you can even track progress and compare your scoring to others, or track how you play individual holes over time to identify weaknesses and areas for improvement.

you can easily take your handicap certificate and then participate in many open competitions around the country that require current handicaps for entry.

Membership Benefits Continued...

Reciprocal Benefitsas well as the wonderful facilities at Bognor, our members have access to many other golfing services in the country.

firstly members can book a reciprocal arrangement with more than 10 regional golf courses through the club office. these currently include: lee-on-the-solent, chipping norton, corhampton, fulford Heath, ifield, Petersfield, romsey, rowlands castle, royal Winchester, shanklin & sandown, and tidworth garrison.

secondly, members of Bognor can get access to a sussex golf union county card, which on payment of a small annual £10 fee entitles members to a reduced reciprocal fee at most courses in sussex and hundreds of others across the whole country.

finally Bognor is a member of the elite reciprocal green fee scheme, offering our members reduced rates at the following courses: east sussex national, Dale Hill (Woosnam), cooden Beach, copthorne, littlehampton and Willingdon.

Social Benefitsthroughout the year, special events are arranged to foster the relaxed friendly nature of our club and to enable members to get to know each other off the course. summer barbecues, family fireworks parties, race nights, discos, casino evenings and karaoke nights are just some of the opportunities to get together. see the club Diary section of our website for more details.

many of the events through the year raise thousands of pounds for charities and good causes in the local community. 33

Competitions

Providing its members with competitive golf for more than 100 years, Bognor regis golf club is the perfect place to develop your game. all of our sections have weekly events where you can test your skills against your fellow members.

as an individual, there is typically a midweek medal or stableford competition to play in, preparing you for a larger competition at the weekend perhaps! there are more than 30 named trophies each in the ladies’ and men’s sections, many of which date back to the club’s inception.

team golf is also well catered for, with popular foursomes, mixed events, ‘Better-Ball’ and others giving you opportunity to play with a friend and try to get an honour together!

the golf club participates in many matches with local clubs in the south of england. the men enter teams in the top competitions organised by the sussex county golf union including the PaV trophy and the cyril Blake cup, while the ladies have teams in the county’s inter-club championship which features three divisions each with a different handicap limit, allowing competition for golfers whatever their standard.

there is a certain pride in representing Bognor against one of its local rivals, dressing in the club colours, playing a competitive match, and then joining your opponents in a friendly post-match dinner. this also affords you another way of meeting new people, and playing on the many other fine courses sussex and the south offers.

Open Competitions

Bognor regis golf club host many open competitions throughout the year to which we extend a warm welcome to players from sussex and beyond to come test their golfing mettle while at the same time enjoying our magnificent course and facilities.

early June sees the men’s over 50’s team event and the mixed charity open for over 55’s, a great event run by our ladies section where all proceeds go to the chosen charity for the year.

Both these competitions are extremely popular, so make sure you keep an eye out for the entry form when it is first available to download from our website.

the gilligan mixed open in June is a hugely popular 36-hole foursomes event which has been running since 1929. it was founded by arthur gilligan, a former club President and former test cricketer.

the Purley trophy, our scratch open and sussex order of merit event, was moved to a saturday in July in 2011 to team up with the Bognor challenge cup and become part of our Bognor challenge Weekend. the Purley trophy is a 36-hole medal event played off scratch which has seen many famous entries over the years including former open and masters champion sandy lyle.

the challenge Weekend is a very important two days in the club calendar, with the Davis Bowl and the millbourn cup being played for by the men on the sunday. the former is an 18-hole foursomes event with a handicap limit of 18, with the latter, also with an upper handicap of 18, is a fourball Better Ball Bogey competition.

younger golfers are not overlooked, with the Junior open, an 18-Hole medal event, taking place in august. 37

Junior Golf

Bognor regis golf club is committed to providing young people with the opportunity to learn, practice, play and enjoy the game of golf and hopefully thereby instilling a passion that can last a lifetime.

our goals are to introduce the game to beginners, encourage the development of our more experienced players and provide wholesome and enjoyable outings for all participating members.

We offer a wide variety of coaching options, open to the public as well as members. in the warmer months Junior clinics are run by our Professional, which typically are held on a saturday morning. there are also individual and smaller group lessons available, and playing lessons on the course to develop your skills further.

Junior membership is very attractively priced and gives full access to the course as well as entry into the many Junior competitions that run through the year.

We have a strong track record of developing our Juniors through to a high standard, including previous members who have gone on to compete on professional tours. our Junior team is a frequent winner of county championships.

the number one aim of our programs is to have fun. from a round with friends to time with parents on the course, or competing, Bognor golf club can offer Juniors everything!

Visitors and Societies

Bognor regis golf club welcomes the opportunity to share our course and facilities with visitors and golf societies.

as a private members’ club, there are certain times of the week and day that are typically reserved for our members, but our staff will endeavour to work around those and ensure you can play on the day you are looking for.

tuesday mornings are reserved for the ladies, and saturday/sunday morning is typically reserved for men’s competitions. you can check the latest schedule by looking in the club Diary section on our website.

if you are in the area on holiday and would like to discuss a multiple-day access to the course, we have special offers that can cater for you and give you a personal welcome throughout your holiday.

We often run special offers for visitors to experience our course and facilities, again check the website for the latest deals.

golfing groups are very welcome at Bognor regis golf club and we would welcome the opportunity to host your society day.

on the course we can offer you a number of services for any number of players between 12 and 50. the course can be configured with longest Drive, straightest Drive and nearest the Pin mini-competitions.

if you would like assistance during the day administering a competition, we can offer various tournament formats, and have a large leaderboard where the winners and losers can be displayed for all to see.

if you would like additional on-course catering then our staff would be happy to drive around in our buggies keeping your guests refreshed. on-course refreshments can also be bought from our gazebo which is situated ideally with access from at least three holes.

once you have worked out the type of event you would like to host, please complete the booking form that is available to download from our website, www.bognorgolfclub.co.uk, and send it in to the secretary.

our society packages can be customised for either 18 or 36 holes with various refreshment opportunities.

Package 1: coffee & bacon roll on arrival, 36 holes of golf with a light lunch in-between and followed by a three-course evening meal.

Package 2: coffee on arrival, with a light lunch or full english breakfast, followed by 18 holes of golf, and a three-course evening meal.

Package 3: coffee & bacon roll on arrival, 18 holes of golf, followed by a light lunch.

The Clubhouse

complete the perfect day at Bognor regis by spending some time relaxing in our well-appointed clubhouse.

the traditional sussex flint-walled building has been tastefully improved with a modern extension and facilities to offer you many services during your stay.

When you first arrive, perhaps you can meet your friends over a coffee in the bar area, before using the air conditioned changing rooms, with lockers for members and guests. after your round, there are individual shower cubicles and facilities to freshen up before heading to the bar again for some refreshments.

if your sporting appetite is not yet satisfied, there is a snooker room available to use throughout the year. the bar and restaurant have an extensive selection of wonderful food options, prepared on site by our chefs. Why not start your day with salmon and scrambled eggs for breakfast in the restaurant, or at lunchtime sample one of the fresh baguettes with fillings ranging from egg mayonnaise and cress to cream cheese, celery and grape, all served with a dressed salad garnish and lattice fries.

We promise a day you will never forget. the newly-refurbished function room with its own bar offers dining facilities for up to 120 people for a full sit-down meal or up to 150 for a buffet-style meal or evening reception.
