In terminal sac period
• Premature fetuses born between week 25
and week 28 can survive with intensive
care; this is the earliest period at which
fetuses can survive.
At birth
• Approximately 150 million primordial
alveoli, one half of the adult number, are
present in the lungs of a full-term newborn
infant.
• The lungs are approximately half-filled with
fluid derived from the amniotic cavity,
lungs and tracheal glands.
Fetal breathing movements
• Fetal breathing movements occur before
birth and are essential for normal lungs
development.
• The pattern of FBMs is widely used in the
diagnosis of labor and as a predictor of
fetal outcome in a preterm delivery.
Pulmonary aplasia.
