• There is more water than land on the planet Earth. The Earth is made up of 70% water and 30% land. Most of this water is in the form of salty ocean water. An ocean is a very large body of saltwater. Oceans are the largest body of water in the world. There

are four main oceans in the world, and they are all connected.

Let’s take another look at the map. Notice all the oceans. There’s the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, the Artic Ocean, and the Indian Ocean. The United States is in the continent of North America. Can you find North America on the map? What oceans do you see that are near North America?

An ocean is one type of body of water. A body of water is the part of the earth’s surface that is covered with water.

Other bodies of water include rivers, lakes, and gulfs.

A river is a large, flowing body of water that usually empties into a sea or ocean.

A lake is a large body of water surrounded by land on all sides.

A gulf is a part of the ocean that is partly surrounded by land.

Here’s another map. Can you find the Atlantic Ocean again? Now find the Gulf of Mexico. Where is the Mississippi River? Notice that Memphis is located along the Mississippi River. What is another city located on the Mississippi River?

The Mississippi River starts in Minnesota in Lake Itasca.

The Mississippi River flows into the the Gulf of Mexico.

The Gulf of Mexico flows into the Atlantic Ocean.

Memphis, Tennessee and New Orleans, Louisiana are two cities that are located along the Mississippi River. Can you find them on the map?

It runs from Minnesota, then through nine other states and then pours into the Gulf of Mexico. The Gulf of Mexico flows into the Atlantic Ocean.
