• Content Area Social Studies • Grade Level 2nd Grade • Summary Students will learn about bodies of water. Students will

trace the flow of the Mississippi River, noting its source, the states it passes through or borders, and its endpoint (mouth).

• Objective/ Target Given information, I can name at least two states that the Mississippi River flows through or borders. Given information, I can recognize that there is more water than land on Earth. Given a map, I can locate the Atlantic Ocean. (All with 100% accuracy) Given information, I can recognize that the Mississippi River flows from Minnesota into The Gulf of Mexico.

• Standard TN State Standard- 2.17. Locate major cities, bodies of water, mountain ranges and rivers in the U.S. (*Many examples given in standard, but the ones covered in this lesson are: Memphis, New Orleans, Gulf of Mexico, Atlantic Ocean, and the

Mississippi River.)

Water and the World

• There is more water than land on the planet Earth. The Earth is made up of 70% water and 30% land. Most of this water is in the form of salty ocean water. An ocean is a very large body of saltwater. Oceans are the largest body of water in the world. There

are four main oceans in the world, and they are all connected.

Bodies of Water

An ocean is one type of body of water. A body of water is the part of the earth’s surface that is covered with water.

Other bodies of water include rivers, lakes, and gulfs.

A river is a large, flowing body of water that usually empties into a sea or ocean.

A lake is a large body of water surrounded by land on all sides.

A gulf is a part of the ocean that is partly surrounded by land.
