From the Classroom English: This term we welcome Mrs Marland as our Learning Support Teacher. Mrs Parker will work with year 3 and Mrs Myer will work with years 4, 5, and 6. Numeracy: Students have begun a new program called ‘Maths Mastery’ this term. Maths Mastery was developed by Dr Rhonda Farkota. Dr Farkota has over 40 years of experience in numeracy education, including: classroom teaching, curriculum development and educational research. We will be sharing the specifics of this program at the next P&C meeting. Science: This term students will be studying Archaeology with Mrs Parker. The focus will be on Australian Archaeology, however other sites of significance will also be covered (Africa, China etc). This will provide an important context for our school excursion next term. History: Students will be studying ‘First Contacts’ with Mrs Marland. This unit will explore the arrival of the First Fleet, life of the early colonies and the impact this had on Australia’s First Nation people. Music: Mrs Costanzo has begun preparing students for our Eisteddfod performance in the Very, Very Small Schools Choir section of the Taree Eisteddfod. This will be held at the Manning Entertainment Centre on Thursday 13 June. Art: Students will be studying the life and works of Albert Namatjira this term. Sport: Students will be developing their athletics skills with Mrs Marland each Friday, in preparation for the small schools athletics carnival, to be held later this term (date to be advised).

BOBIN HALL NEWS Firstly and most importantly, Happy Birthday Ronnie Miller! We were delighted to celebrate his momentous occasion on Saturday 6 April. Everyone had a fabulous day with more than 90 family and friends turning out to celebrate this special Birthday. There was an array of ‘’Ronnie through the ages” photos on display on the day and these are still on the walls to view the younger dapper Ronnie! We also have some great pics on our Bobin Hall Facebook page so take a look. A big thanks to all that contributed to the feast and to Tanya Upperton for the beautiful chocolate cake, to Gwyn for working like a navy all day, to the children for making the bright Birthday banner and to Noel for one large and succulent, slow cooked (from 6.00am Sunday morning) pork roast! Friday nights are back to 5pm Please note - now that daylight saving has finished, the hall is opening at 5pm again on Friday nights for everyone to pop in for a drink, nibbles welcome. Saturday Knight Live – 18 May at 6.30pm - Dinner and show Our dinner and show is now SOLD OUT for Saturday 18 May. Please make sure you arrive at 6.30pm as entrée and mains will be served before the show. If you have any questions, please email [email protected] We’re looking forward to a fantastic night of delectable food, music, drama and hilarity in the capable hands of Helen Knight and her trusty musical stable mates/body guards! Grant projects update We did say in the last newsletter that we were hoping that our DA from Council would be approved shortly for our new septic system and we can now report that work has finally commenced this week! It’s all happening in April and the disabled access slab at the side of the hall is being laid too. GROW FREE - Community produce cart A cart set is up at the hall for excess produce. If you have any preserves, plants, flowers or anything you’d like to trade with the community please bring it along to swap with some produce on the cart. It’s available on Friday afternoons until the end of the Friday night socials. Boomerang shopping bags A group of keen sewers in the community are making boomerang shopping bags that are being sold at the hall for $4. All proceeds are going to the hall so drop in and pick up a bag or borrow one and boomerang it back.

Membership If you are not a member and would like to join to support the hall, please come along on a Friday night to join for just $5.

Bobin Rural Fire Service AGM on 20th May 2019 at 7pm. Allan Moore will be retiring as Captain and we are URGENTLY looking for new members. A new truck was handed over in January and it is important to have more members join immediately for us to keep the truck. Please come along to show your support for this vital service.

Boomerang bags are community-made using recycled materials.

In the span of its lifetime, one re-useable bag will replace over 700 plastic bags. By simply bringing

your own bags, you have the power to: Save trees Save water Protect wildlife from ingestion and entanglement Keep our ocean clean Keep humans healthy Reduce our reliance on fossil

fuels.

Look out for them – shortly on sale at Bobin Hall with all proceeds going to the hall.

The next sewing bee will be on Monday 13th May. You don’t need to have a sewing machine or be able to sew, there are other jobs as well.

To find out more, contact Meaghan on 6550 5088

BOBIN WILD It’s been a while since our last newsletter although it’s not too late to extend a huge thank you to Leigh, Gwyn and Leon for their invaluable assistance in the kitchen and to the many others who helped with plate collecting and washing up. Thanks also to those that contributed a wonderful array of delicious desserts and a final thank you to everyone that came along and enjoyed the food and conviviality of the day. A couple of newsletters ago I gave an explanation for the origin of the placename Bobin. At the time it was understood that Bobin meant “the water where platypus reside”. Some fact checking and referencing of the Gatung dictionary could not substantiate that explanation. This is not surprising as the Gatung dictionary does not cover all dialectic variance within the Biripi linguistic group. This is particularly noticeable within the Bobin / Bulga area to the Manning catchment. I approached Jack Bailey with this quandry and he kindly offered to do some research and, after questioning some Biripi elders, came up with an explanation. It seems that Bobin is derived from the word Boobun (or Boobung) which means “the place of sleepy mountains”. It is also believed that it is within these mountains that platypus come to sleep. Jack also pointed out that the Biripi elders believe that the topography of the area, when viewed from above, resembles the outline of a platypus. A big thanks to Jack for his sleuthing and to the elders for their generous assistance. Thanks to Richard and Vicki for sending through photos of a couple of mystery animals. One of these is a small snake-like reptile that was found within a compost heap. This turned out to be a Common Scaly-foot Pygopus lepidopodus. Scaly-foots belong to a family of legless lizards known as pygopods. Pygopods are unique to Australia and New Guinea and, as such, are a gondwanan relict group. Although snake-like, pygopods are most closely related to geckos. Like geckos, pygopods have external ears, no eyelids and can vocalise and, unlike snakes, retain vestiges of their hindlimbs in the form of a pair of scale-like flaps. These beautiful little lizards are completely harmless and feed mostly on small invertebrates and, although relatively common, their nocturnal habits and cryptic nature make them hard to find. The other photo - correctly identified by Richard - was a White-naped Honeyeater Melithreptus linatus. Richard photographed the bird visiting a birdbath with a flock of other species. It has an olive green back, white underparts and a black

head. The nape of the neck is also black with a thin, crescent-shaped white line on the margin. This smallish bird avoids dense rainforest preferring open woodland or the margins of wet eucalypt forest. This is a new one for our local birdlist, bringing the number of species up to 114. Keep your eyes and ears open for anything interesting and please send through your discoveries - I’ll do my best to identify them. See you at the hall Peter
