A VALUABLE
LESSON
While we take academics very seriously, not everything
worth knowing can be learned in a book. Sometimes
you just have to get out there and be open to the full
OHIO experience.
HEY, I KNOW YOU
There’s something to be said for meeting as many people as possible, but Learning Communities are one of the ways our big(ish) school feels small. As part of an LC, up to 25 first-year students grouped by college or interest take a series of classes together, and spoiler: you’ll probably become friends with a few of them.
See a complete list of learning communities at www.ohio.edu/uc/learning-communities.

YOU CAN HAVE IT
ALL HERE.
Athens is a small but eclectic city located among rolling hills, flowing rivers, a
national forest, and more. There’s a reason green is our main color—the most beautiful
nature in Ohio is right at our doorstep.
WAYNE NATIONAL FOREST
Just minutes from campus, the Wayne is a quarter-million (!) acres of Appalachian landscape for hiking, biking, horseback riding, ATV riding, fishing, camping, and general exploration. “Not all who wander are lost” isn’t just a sticker on a laptop here.
OHIO UNIVERSITY GOLF COURSE
Our public nine-hole golf course (one of two in Athens!) is just the
distance of a three-wood shot from the center of campus. And if chipping and
putting isn’t your thing, there’s also a picturesque disc golf course.

UPTOWN & DOWNTIME UPTOWN & DOWNTIME
COFFEE, FOOD, MUSICIf you want to be a true Townie (that’s Athens-speak for “local”), you’d better know where to get a good cup of coffee. But not just a grab ‘n’ go caffeine fix. With so much great local food and music, prepare to sit and enjoy—or get up and dance to the beat of the city.
(In no particular order)
THE 30-MILE MEAL
Seriously, bring an appetite. Athens is one of the nation’s first super-local food economies, with more than 140 food partners proudly committed to serving up the flavors of the region, deliciously and responsibly.
KEEP YOUR PAWPAWS TO YOURSELF
Is it a banana? A mango? Nope, it’s the elusive state native fruit of Ohio. Get fancy with some pawpaw bread, pawpaw pudding, pawpaw ice cream, pawpaw jam—or, hey, just slice it in half, dig in with a spoon, and spit out the seeds.
DON’T FEED THE CAT. While Rufus may be the official campus mascot, keep an eye out for Pumpkin, the local celebrity in the window of the Athens County Board of Elections office. In lieu of treats, you can show Pumpkin love by upholding your civic duty to vote. And signing his guest book.
FEEDTHE SOUL.When your stomach gets full, there’s plenty of arts and culture to give you a taste of the Athens scene.

OUR HISTORIC ATHENA CINEMA
How many university classrooms are also among the oldest movie theaters in the nation? Operated by the College of Fine Arts and staffed by students, the Athena Cinema plays current and classic films from around the world and just down the street.
ART FOR ACTIVISM’S SAKE
Since the '70s, the Mulberry Street Graffiti Wall has been a canvas for OHIO activists to have their voices heard. The coolest part? It’s not uncommon for these artistic expressions to spark actual change at the University or community level. If you’re new to tagging, check out the Study and Application of Spray Paint, which, yes, is a real student organization.

STUDENTS NOW, ALUMNI LATER, BOBCATS FOREVER... OHIO is in touch with our community in lasting ways that
many universities are not: regional campuses that lift up
and lend a hand, undergrad research directly tied to the
needs of Appalachia, and activism that has run through
students’ veins for as long as we can remember.
TOP SYNONYMS FOR OHIO PROFESSOR: Mentor, research partner, network-expander, and most importantly, neighbor. If and when you see them on Court Street, say hi. It’ll serve you well for years to come.
...AND ENOUGH STUDENT ORGS AND EVENTS TO KEEP YOU BUSY THE WHOLE TIME.
+600 MORE (IMAGINE A MAJOR, INTEREST, CULTURE, OR AFFILIATION, AND THERE’S A COMMUNITY FOR IT.)
And you don’t have to wait until grad school to get involved.
OHIO’s research is deeply integrated into real problems affecting the region,

OHIO UNIVERSITY OPIOID TASKFORCE
A partnership between community members and Bobcats from all campuses, this group is leading Southeast Ohio in strategies for the education, prevention, and treatment of an epidemic that hits close to home for many in Appalachia.
THE ECONOMICS OF ALTRUISM
In this popular course, students dive headfirst into the science of philanthropy by partnering with a growing list of local nonprofits—connecting with each other, Athens community members, and the course material in much more meaningful ways.
WHAT BEAUTIFUL...ACID MINE DRAINAGE?
Coal mines that once sustained the region now sit abandoned, collecting acidified water that dissolves stone and threatens the water
supply. Professors in engineering and art teamed up to create an innovative way to turn this
orangey pollution into paint pigments while simultaneously cleaning the water.

strong hind legs: Adapted to traverse hills—and mountains—with ease. Especially when you’re running late to Calc.
teeth:Sharp and efficient, Bobcats sink their teeth into new challenges just as easily as chicken strips from Nelson Commons.
ear tufts: Enhances hearing for Athens’ eclectic music scene. Observe them perking up to bluegrass at Casa Nueva, local legends at the Union, and of course OHIO’s own Marching 110.
COLORING—Green and White
DIET—Jackie O’s burgers, Burrito Buggy, Ho-Ho Cake, the best fries in the world at O’Betty’s Red Hot, and their own namesake Bobcat sandwich at Bagel Street Deli
ACTIVE SEASON—August to December, January to May (but not before 11am if they can help it)
TERRITORY—In calm seasons, common all around Appalachia. But during finals week, when resources (namely, time) are scarce, they gravitate toward 24-hour haunts such as Donkey Coffee.
BEHAVIOR—Independent and unafraid to explore, fiercely loyal to their pack (of 260,000 and counting!)
LIFE CYCLE—Cubs start maturing as soon as they receive their acceptance letter. Even after reaching maturity, Bobcats are often witnessed returning back to the den… er, campus, for Homecoming.
Anatomy of a Bobcat (Lynx Academicus)
bobbed tail: Optimized for balance on the ground, equally as agile on campus as they are weaving through Southern Ohio’s communities.
