TITLE AND REGISTRATION: The information on the title for the boat should match the registration and the owner’s name. Look on the title to see if any liens have been released. Some states require titles for trailers too.

CHECK THE HULL IDENTIFICATION NUMBER (HIN): It must match the title and registrationor the boat may not be able to be registered.

PURCHASE AGREEMENT: Fill this form out completely. Choose a reasonable closing date on which the sale must either be completed, or the deposit returned. Make sure the seller’s name and the boat’s HIN are exactly as they appear on the title. Check with your insurance company to verify they can cover your new boat.

PAYMENT: Cash is okay for small amounts, but obtaining a cashier’s check at the buyer’s bank is safest.
