BIG Quick Facts
• Authorized by the Sportfishing and Boating Safety Act of 1998 which amended the Sport Fish Restoration Act
• Provided $8 million annually out of Aquatic Resources Trust Fund • Revenues: manufacturers’ excise taxes on
sport fishing equipment and a portion of the gasoline fuel tax attributable to small engines and motorboats

• In 2005, SAFETEA signed into law, reauthorized the Act through 2009.
• Captured additional 4.8 cents per gallon of fuel tax beginning in FY 05-06.
• Replaced Aquatic Resources Trust Fund with Sport Fish Restoration and Boating Trust Fund.
• Changed annual distribution to BIG to 2% of the funds in the Sport Fish Restoration and Boating Trust Fund
