This event was very successful for us last year (our first at Einbunpin). The event goes all day so to lighten the load we will need your help. It is fun, bring your family along to look at the many delights of this community festival while you are at our stand.
We are working hard to promote VMR Brisbane and be-come more well known in the local area.
Can you help us out at Einbunpin Festival on the 26 July? We need at least 10 crew members on the day (5 for morn-ing and 5 for afternoon). You will be proudly representing our Squadron along with Sandgate Rescue 2 at our display stand. Raffle tickets, VMR Brisbane information, member-ship forms and handouts will be at the display for you to assist with enquiries.

Activations Report
March 2015
8th - On the night of the 8th, Energex Sandgate 1 was tasked to assist a yacht broken down near the Compass Ad-justment Point Buoy and towed it back to the Cabbage Tree Creek Marina.
14th - Energex Sandgate 1 was tasked by the Water Police to assist in searching for a person allegedly in the water be-tween Mud Island and Bribie. The search pattern consisted of an area consisting of Green Island, west of Brisbane River, Nudgee Beach and as far north as Castlereigh Reef.
16th - Energex Sandgate 1 was activated to tow a vessel from Scarborough to Scarborough Boat Harbour.
24th - Energex Sandgate 1 was tasked to pump out a vessel in Cabbage Tree Creek which was sinking.
April 2015
3rd - Energex Sandgate 1 was tasked to assist with start of Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race.
4th - Energex Sandgate 1 was activated to tow a vessel from Woody Point after their engine overheated. The vessel had 3 POB and was towed to Baxters Jetty.
6th - Energex Sandgate 1 was activated when contacted by a member of public advising that a vessel was sighted with their V-Sheet on display. When ES1 arrived, no further assis-tance was required.
6th - Sandgate Rescue 2 was tasked to tow a vessel from Mud Island to Nudgee Floodway.
6th - Energex Sandgate 1 was activated to tow a vessel with 4 POB from Pinkenba Reach to Colmslie Boat Ramp. The vessel had experienced electrical problems.
9th - Sandgate Rescue 2 was tasked to assist a vessel from Curtin Artificial Reef to Whyte Island with 1 POB.
12th - Energex Sandgate 1 was on a navigational training run and was called to assist a vessel with 6 POB near Peel Island and tow back to VMR Raby Bay.

21st - Sandgate Rescue 2 was tasked to tow a vessel with 4 POB from Nudgee Beach to Nudgee Floodway Boat Ramp.
26th - Energex Sandgate 1 was activated to check on two vessels.
May 2015
1st – Energex Sandgate 1 was tasked by the Water Police to perform a Search in the Brisbane River. The Water Police cancelled the Search after one hour.
2nd – Energex Sandgate 1 and Sandgate Rescue 2 were tasked to assist a vessel to mooring after a storm surge after it was grounded.
4th – Energex Sandgate 1 was tasked to tow a broken down vessel with 1 POB from the mouth of the Brisbane River to Whyte Island Boat Ramp.
9th – Energex Sandgate 1 was tasked by Qld Water Police to assist with a Search and Rescue of a light plane which crashed in the water off Stradbroke Island.

We will be involved with the Einbunpin Festival again this year on Sunday 26th of July.
Open Day is fast approaching. This will be held on the 20th September and we are planning some additions this year for it to be a little bit different. Your help in the planning and on the day will be appreciated. We would like to proudly show our strength as the combined club we are. Energex and Port of Brisbane are already in-
volved in helping us out. Can you?
We have also been invited to partici-pate with VMR Bribie Emergency Services Expo on Sunday 11th of October. Foxtrot crew had a great time last year helping out!
What else would we like to be in-volved with??
Why do we do all of the above? Be-cause it’s fun. Because it lets everyone know who we are and what we do. And because of this we get to have new members join us, of which we have 13 since March!

So what have I been up to for the last couple months?
I attended a Search and Rescue Conference at Jupiter’s Hotel Gold Coast. It was great to see a good represen-tation of VMR Squadrons as well as Coast Guard and NSW Marine Rescue and many other organisations. As a result of this I am in discussions with Bruce from Sandgate Canoe Club re expression of interest in as-sisting with shallow water searches.
I have met with our new local member Stirling Hinchcliffe and Victoria Newton and discussed who we are and some of the challenges we have that govern-ment both state and local may be able to assist with.
VMR Brisbane was invited to attend a meeting with Boatsafe Training Association of Queensland. It’s great to see Transport and Main Roads and Water Police in-volved with actively trying to improve awareness and competencies around marine driver and personal water-craft licensing.
I look forward to working with each of you, on and off the water.

I hope no one has blinked
as the year is nearly half over.
One thing I love about VMR Brisbane is the passion we
have for our association and being a volunteer organisa-tion, it doesn’t matter who you are, where you came from or what skills you have there is always a place for you as long as you have VMR Bris-bane’s best interest at heart.
To quote a well-known president “ Don’t ask what VMR Brisbane can do for you. Ask what you can do for VMR Brisbane.” And I can guarantee it will be paid back many times over.
We have an amazing diversity of people from all over the world with many different skill sets and we all bring something different to the table.
Be it enthusiasm and passion all the way through to a steadying hand and wisdom.
Now that I have buttered you all up, with so much hap-pening with VMR Brisbane we would like to call for some volunteers to be part of an Events Sub-Committee to help us participate in our local and wider community.
It doesn’t matter if we can only spare an hour a week, every little bit helps get the word out about how amazing an Association we are.
We have been involved with Blue Water Festival this year, as we should be. Both as part of the festival and as part of the on water activities and thanks to VMR Bribie for providing assistance with this.
We have had another Bunnings BBQ, which all mem-bers who help out have a great time and we get to raise some much needed funds at the same time.
We have found and rededicated part of our heritage in the Memorial Stone. It was great to see so many of our more senior members both past and present attend this and I hope I paid enough respect and recognition not only to our servicemen and women but also our past and present members from all parts of the Association.
We had the amazing privilege to march in the ANZAC day parade in our local community. I must say this was a rather moving and humbling experience and we look forward to being involved in this for many more years to come.
We have welcomed a new and enthusiastic local spon-sor in Deagon Bulk Meats who came about from one of our posts on our Facebook page.
Some of the support we have already had was the sup-ply of the sausages for our Bunnings BBQ which we had many enquiries as to where the sausages came from!

As Secretary, my role is
varied, at the moment and for the next few months I am busy preparing for the Mem-bers Open Forum in July, our
Open Day and our Annual General Meeting in September. Further details of the AGM are contained in the Boat Talk. Please take the time to read through these documents.
In my role as Workplace Health and Safety Officer, my last inspection found unsafe electrical leads being used in the hardstand area. The con-sequences of this could have been extremely detrimental to lives and property, hence the leads have been removed and the owner advised that correctly tagged leads only can be used. Be aware of this matter at our base and at your home and workplace. We have a SOP for electrical use in the hardstand area which can be found on our website. There is also de-tailed information on electrical leads under the Hardstand section in our website also and can be read by going to http://www.vmrbrisbane.com.au/facilities/hardstand-
rental.

Your Management Committee and mid-week crews are continually working to maintain and improve our Squad-ron, club, clubhouse, grounds, hardstand and our all im-portant rescue vessels.
In this column I would like to honour the ongoing work of our Mid-week Crew. They deserve a very special acknowledgement and Thanks. The work they do each and every week keeps us operating. In fact quite a few of these men are not active crew members but still commit their time and energy to us. This number of hours regis-tered is the time just at the base, many unregistered hours go on off the base, sourcing and collecting goods and supplies to complete the next weeks projects. The knowledge, talent and experience of the mid-week crew extends to plumbing, welding, gas fittings, radio techni-cians, earthmoving and many other trades. They gladly share their trade activities with us and save us no end of funds by providing their skills. Thank you all.
Whether or not you have trade experience, they will wel-come you at the base any Tuesday morning from about 8am thru to mid afternoon. The volunteers enjoy a strong comraderie, extending to real mateships that have formed through the mid-week crew. Tuesdays, they have found is a great time to arrange fishing trips and share their fishing tales. You would need to be there
to believe some of the ones that got away!
The Mid-Week Crew would like to thank Rae for keeping our workers sustained with your home baked goodies. It is something very much appreciated by the crew every Tuesday.
We are also currently looking for persons who can help with helping with upcoming events such as the Members Forum, Ein-bunpin Festival, Bunnings BBQ’s and Open Day to name a few. We look forward to your support.

These positions are not taken on lightly; both Bill and Les are at your service. Should you wish to discuss any matter regarding your ex-perience with our Association, you can talk personally, write a note envelope it and place it in the mail cupboard in the Crew Room, post it, email, a phone call whatever is your choos-ing. Of course your Duty Master is also avail-able to you; however a direct approach is your Members Representative. Bill and Les are not there to judge, but to make sure you are heard.
Do this as a matter of importance, as a squad-ron we need your communications direct. Bill and Les will take your matters precisely and confidentially (if you require), to the Manage-ment Meeting or act on them immediately should the case be warranted.
No good will come from telling any and all whether it be a grievance, an idea or a pat on the back, your concerns are ours. Only good will come from talking to the right people who can do something about it.
It is in all our interests as members and as a squadron to be on top of situations that arise, as they do with so many members, individual personalities, views and experience. Don’t hold back if you have something to say, these are your people and we want your feedback.

You need to remember that modules need to be com-
pleted in the order listed on the Audit Sheets. To assist
you with this, and to plot your progres-
sion, crew members will soon be able
to view their individual Audit Sheet on
their crew login.
Training should not be rushed as there
are minimum time frames in place for
progression.
With help from Peter, I am in the pro-
cess of transferring information from the old task books
to over to the new MAR Task Books which are now is-
sued by AMSA. Once this is complete, those requiring a
Task Book will be advised on when they will be issued.
These crew members will need a passport photo (which
is to be signed on the back declaring that it is a photo of
you) and must not be older than six months.
These new books are different to the old but, all details
are to be completed which include; Personal details and
also vessel details. Each item in the sign off also needs
to be fully completed prior to being signed. Task Books
must remain on base and are not to be taken home.

May and ESS (Elements of Shipboard
Safety) course has been scheduled for
you to ensure that you complete it within
six months of your joining. For the re-
mainder of Active Crew members, train-
ing is progressing fairly well for both;
Two and Three Stripe subjects.
Active crew members wishing to progress, should regu-
larly check the website for any changes to the training
programme and also keep an eye out for email invita-
tions to Theory, Exams and Practicals which are the
easiest way for me to keep in contact. Training Mod-
ules consists of: 1) – Theory Session/s; 2) – Task Book
completion/s; 3) – Written Assignment; 4) – Written As-
sessment and; 5) – Practical Assessment. For assign-
ments and assessments, please ensure that you read
the questions properly and also write neatly in your re-
sponses.

If you would like to be on this “Fill In Crew” list, please send your details to [email protected] so that we can put the list to-gether and let everyone know. Plus you get the ad-vantage of meeting some of the other members and who knows you might actually have some fun and learn some-thing new. This is also a great opportunity for crew who need to build up their Sea Time.

newals has arrived. Just a quick reminder that we have emailed both membership and hardstand invoices to those members that
we have email addresses on file. With the implementation of the new gate control system, I would like to remind everybody your membership will lapse on on the 30/6/2015. If payment is not received within 30 days, your access to the base may be restricted. Keys will be turning off on the 7/7/15.
On a quick note all the clubs finances are traveling a per budget.
Our recent community fundraisers are outlined in this magazine. Join in at the next chance you get, you’ll enjoy yourself!

VMR Brisbane Not for Profit
You may notice in this Boat Talk there is the Notice for the AGM and calling for nominations for positions. Some things to keep in mind if you are considering nominating for a position.
Who is VMR Brisbane Inc? We are an Incorporated Not For Profit Association of Members which encompasses the Rescue Squadron, Sand-gate Yacht Club, Sandgate Canoe Club and up until recently the Lionfish Dive Club but now the Outrigger Club who have joined us.
So what does that mean?
One definition is: "A non-profit organisation is an organisation that is not operating for the profit or gain of its indi-vidual members, whether these gains would have been direct or indirect. This applies both while the organisation is operating and when it winds up.
Any profit made by the organisation goes back into the operation of the organisation to carry out its purposes and is not distributed to any of its members."
What does this mean?
Management both Executive and Committee need to be aware of their responsibilities, not only to the members but also legally.
So what are some of these responsibilities?
• Being accountable for all decisions made. • Making sure any decisions are in the best interest of VMR Brisbane as an association and not in favour of a
few. • Provide direction for the future sustainability of our Association so it is here for all the members to enjoy for
many years to come. • Managing of our resources efficiently and effectively so we can fulfil our obligations; to our members to provide
services and facilities, to our obligations as a Volunteer Marine Rescue Squadron and to our community ser-vice responsibility.
• Ensuring systems, policies, checks and balances are in place so we are compliant with our obligations to our members and our governing bodies be it Local, State or Federal.
• Advising and Informing our members of any decisions that may impact VMR Brisbane Inc. • Supporting those that support us in the many roles VMR Brisbane needs filled to run efficiently.
I am most certainly not trying to dissuade people from nominating, in fact as I have said many times, we all have something different to offer. So by all means come join the party that is VMR Brisbane Management but please come informed as to what will and may be expected of you.
As long as you act in VMR Brisbane’s best interest, we will continue to have the amazing Association that we currently enjoy.

Sandgate Canoe Club Report
The club recently intro-
duced night paddles on the paddle calendar.
Initially I thought this was a curiosity and was perplexed
why anyone would want to paddle at night when visi-bility is poor and the stimulating day-time Queens-land sceneries are missing. So the lovely golden sands of Coochiemudlo, the friendly dolphins pods of the Pumicestone Passage or the blue waters of Victoria Point Darren and Rob would be absent. However, I felt it was important to try such a paddle. I was impressed when the paddle leader and organ-iser (Ian) provided me beforehand with a very useful informative sheet on paddling at night on the Bris-bane River.
I started the paddle with an open mind. It was “strange” getting togged up at night and then in-stalling our little night lights. There was a pod of four. Setting off at first it was dark and I was missing the day-time visuals that I am used to. After about ten minutes my eyes accommodated to the dark-ness and I suddenly started noticing the velvety smooth waters reflecting lights from the nearby city buildings. The kayaks seemed to travel quite fast and I thought that this was perception rather than a fact but later study of the GPS data showed quite high speeds from 8-10 kph. This was partly because of the clever planning for the tides and also because the pod wanted to “put a bit of grunt” into the pad-dling, with the purpose of using the exercise to im-prove paddling technique and stamina purposes.
The outward journey to the Southbank was quite enchanting. The waters of the river were flat and calm, and “floating through the city” with lights from the tall buildings reflecting off the water was very enjoyable. The pod leader ensured thatwe followed the correct protocols with regard to ferries and barg-es. Some ferry captains indicated that they had seen us and politely waved us through or acknowledged our discipline in giving them right -of-way.
The coffee shop at Southbank was very welcoming and served us with hot steaming café lattés with a smile. This surprised me as I anticipated some raised eye -brows at the motley group of wet and all-kitted up kayakers trekking into their “posh” South-bank restaurant.
The return journey was delightful and uneventful; however, it was quicker as the number of ferries had reduced considerably. My impression is that night paddles are definitely enjoyable; also safe if the kay-aks are equipped with lights and correct protocols are followed. Try it!

Bluewater Festival
With the restructure of the Shorncliffe Pier happening on
the lower park area the Festival was held at Upper
Moura Park this year, starting at 8 am on Thursday 2nd
April our volunteers arrived to assist with traffic diver-
sion, erecting stall holders display stands, signage and
any other tasks asked of us in the set up for the festival.
In return, Volunteer Marine Rescue Brisbane was invited
to have a display area, at the top end of the park we set
up to have Sandgate Rescue 2 on display along with
information about our squadron, activities and member-
ship.
As the day went on the cloud cover grew but the crowds
didn’t. With a planned start of 4pm there were few
around to enjoy the great variety of stalls, food and mu-
sic on the main stage. Surprisingly quite a few did come
out in the light rain as dark fell, families with children in
the lantern walk and staying for the evening highlight of
the fireworks.
On the water were Energex Sandgate 1, Sandgate 2
and Bribie 1, our vessels acted as marshals to public
vessels and host to the pyrotechnics barge. Radio com-
munications from the barge, Energex Sandgate 1 and
Sandgate Rescue 2 (at the festival) gave the Go! And
the fireworks display was on! The oohs and ahhs of the
audience were fabulous and a definite sign of enjoy-
ment. Fireworks over and the crowds dispersed, down
came the rain, as heavy as you like drowning our stand
and collection buckets. A very wet pack up indeed!
Good Friday morning our fantastic volunteers were back
at 8am to re-erect our stand dry everything out and pre-
pare for another day of festivities. At this stage the col-
lection bucket count was two gold coins and 8 litres of
fresh water!
Onward we go, this day fined up beautifully and the
crowd did come. Our volunteers on our stand were kept
busy all day with enquiries about what we do, member-
ship and people wanting a good look over Sandgate
Rescue2.
The start of Brisbane to Gladstone yacht race is incorpo-
rated in the Bluewater Festival, so we were an extremely
busy squadron of Good Friday. From our base the radio
room was extremely busy with vessels logging on for the
big race while Energex Sandgate 1 and Sandgate 2
were active on the water again. Under the secure con-
trol of Tango Crew, we again marshalled the large spec-
tator fleet from before the race start and through to Red-
cliffe.
At the festival, with our spirits raised we continued until
the end of the festival at 4pm. We called for some of our
duty crew to assist at Upper Moura Park and they did.

Bluewater Festival is held annually and provided us with
the opportunity to again be out in the community, show-
ing our wares and meeting other community groups. We
did gain memberships, full, crew and Waterside Assist.
Our volunteers really do enjoy these ‘outings’, mixing
with other crew members they don’t usually meet.
Mindful that this is the Easter holiday period when many
families are going away, we are so fortunate to have
been able to fulfil our duties and wish to thank each and
every member of Volunteer Marine Rescue Brisbane
that took part in this Festival you did us proud, looked
sharp in your uniform and enthusiastically welcomed
visitors to our display.
Thank you all so much for being involved in this
‘activation’ by our squadron.

On the 19th April, VMR Brisbane held a WWII Memorial Stone unveil-
ing. It was wonderful to see the interest in the stone within the commu-
nity, especially Ted Decker, whose father originally unveiled the stone
in 1948. Thank you to all of the members who helped on the day to
make this a memorable occasion. It’s wonderful to finally see the
stone in a secure and safe new home.

Shorncliffe Pier Recycled Wood
VMR Brisbane was recently rewarded by the Bris-
bane City Council by securing enough wood from
the old Shorncliffe Pier to make a Memorial Wall,
dedicated to past, present and future members.
Our mid-week team is busy planning the wall and
says that the wall will be finished within two
months.
This story will be featured in the next edition of
Boat Talk.

Donations for Nepal Earthquake
VMR Brisbane's charter is to save lives at sea and to help people in need. It was our duty to therefore help out a `brother' Meelit Shah, one of our Active Members and who was in Kathmandu at the time of the devastating earth-quake last month. VMR Brisbane donated $500 to help out his local orphanage, the New Nepal Society Centre. Basudha Rai who started the Go Fund Me account is Meel-it's landlady and they are working together to help those in need.
VMR Brisbane also donated $500 to Phil Fitzgerald who is currently in Nepal doing support work for the Bal Sarathi Street Orphan School. VMR Brisbane used the profit from the last Bunnings BBQ to help out the needy in Nepal.
We wish Meelit, Basudha and Phil luck in helping out the needy in any form they can.

Approximately 60 of our Active Crew Members updat-ed their skills for their First Aid. Thank you to Ener-gex as VMR Brisbane used some of the grant money to help fund these necessary skills, which are used to save lives.
VMR Brisbane was invited to march this year at the Sandgate Dawn Service to commemorate the Centenary of ANZAC.

Charlie Crew BBQ
Again Charlie Crew treated the members to three deli-
cious soups made by Karen, Janelle & Bronwyn, ten-
der steaks again supplied by Deagon Bulk Meats, sau-
sages, baked potatoes and vegies, followed by tira-
misu made by Angie and tarts made by Karen. The 45
people in attendance didn’t go home hungry!!!
Peter Leech told us about the Rotary Duck Race on
June 14, fortunately our guests had some raffle money
left after buying “ducks”.
Our first prize was a Garmin GPS donated by Suzuki
and won by Chris Hillyard. Deagon Bulk Meats again
donated a meat tray which was won by Angie Aceto.
Third prize was a dinner for two donated by Kedron
Wavell RSL and a “Bronco Bear” expertly knitted and
donated by Sally Byrne, this lucky winner was Mrs Vic
Kussrow. Joe Myatt won the lucky door prize of a
James Boag six pack and a box of chocolates. All win-
ners also scored a Suzuki cap. The Goose Club val-
ued at $400 was drawn, the number belonged to Tim
Holt who was not present.

Bravo‘s crew BBQ was a winner with 45 people attending. The delicious steaks were supplied by Deagon Bulk Meats who also donated a meat tray that was raffled and won by Les Pascoe. A second meat tray was won by Cameron Pegler.
Allan Eustace and Joan won the lucky doore prize, a box of chocolates and also the dinner for two donated by Kedon-Wavell Services Club. Biran Nelson won a First Aid Book donated by Deidre Windham. All winners also scored a Suzuik cap. The Goose Club number drawn 145 belonged to David McLean who was not present.
