KS4 Literature The literature section of the KS4 English product is split into five areas: pre-1914 prose, post-1914 prose, pre-1914 drama, post-1914 drama, and poetry. Every unit has a variety of interactive Flash activities, as well as worksheets that correspond with specific slides. Pre-1914 prose Far from the Madding Crowd There are six presentations covering Thomas Hardy’s Far from the Madding Crowd:

• An introduction (7 slides, 1 Flash activity)

dealing with the author’s life and the context of the book.

• Close analysis of chapters 1–14 (28 slides, 6 Flash activities), including slides on narrative perspective, realism, romanticism and pathetic fallacy. A number of the characters are also discussed in detail.

• Close analysis of chapters 15–29 (24 slides, 6 Flash activities). This presentation talks about the characters in more detail and also covers the significance of colour and the use of dialogue in the novel, asking questions throughout.

• Close analysis of chapters 43–57 (17 slides, 5 Flash activities).

• An ‘Overview and Revision’ presentation (10 slides, 4 Flash activities), summing up the events of the novel and talking about the themes. It ends with a number of suggested essay questions and a Who wants to be a Millionaire quiz.

All of the presentations covering specific areas of the novel have drag and drop plot summary exercises throughout. A set of thirty-one worksheets accompanies this unit.



The Short Story (53 slides, 6 Flash activities)

This presentation introduces the typical features of a short story before focusing on one example: ‘The Speckled Band’ by Arthur Conan Doyle. This is a pre-twentieth century text by a major writer in the English literary heritage, which students are encouraged to compare with other detective stories. Students examine characteristics of the crime genre, including character, storyline, narrative voice and setting. A set of seventeen worksheets accompanies this unit.



Post-1914 prose Lord of the Flies There are three presentations covering William Golding’s Lord of the Flies: • Lord of the Flies – Section One (39 slides,

12 Flash activities) includes chapter summaries as well as information on the author and the historical and literary context. It looks at characterization and language work and includes activities assessing knowledge and understanding.

• Lord of the Flies – Section Two (23 slides,

• Lord of the Flies – Section Three (24

Of Mice and Men There are six presentations in this section, each covering a section of Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men. Plot summaries are included in each presentation. • Of Mice and Men – Section One (19 slides,

5 Flash activities) includes author information on John Steinbeck, the Great Depression and the American Dream and looks at the social and political context of the novel. Activities look at setting the scene, George and Lennie and foreshadowing.

Pre-1914 drama Romeo and Juliet The five Romeo and Juliet presentations examine each act of the play in detail. Individual scenes are analysed before students are asked comprehension questions. Text work is supported by photos and videos of a performance of the play. A set of thirty-six worksheets accompanies this unit. This presentation sets up a situation whereby the students have to decide who in their company to make redundant. They are given six different candidates and told their backgrounds, and then they have to argue their points of view as to who should go.
