I’m thrilled to have you join us in Downtown Charleston for our 6th Annual Training. In Greenville last year, we aimed to Spark Innovation at our 5th Annual Training. This year, we are celebrating South Carolina’s Heroes of Change.

Since 2010, SC Thrive and our valued Partners have served over 204,000 individuals, completed over 153,000 applications and

returned over $381 million in work supports back to South Carolina. There is no way that this could have been possible without the hard work

of organizations that work tirelessly to bring positive change to our communities and our great state.

You are the Heroes of Change in your communities who champion social innovation and community collaboration. You combat inequity and stare down seemingly impossible questions. You are innovative in your efforts to serve your communities. Your work at foodbanks, healthcare clinics, libraries, churches and MANY other places brings positive change to South Carolina.

While you’re with us at Annual Training, we want to remind you that even though this work is difficult and messy at times, it is so very essential to our communities. Together, we will continue to fight for necessary change. Thank you for being Heroes of Change.

Yours in service,

Tricia RichardsonExecutive Director, SC Thrive

Change Gonna Come | Carolina BallroomChange is slow, good, frustrating, constant and inevitable. As Rozalynn recounts historical change and shares experiences of modern day change efforts and successes, attendees will be inspired to accept the Heroes of Change mantle, reassured that change is “gonna come.”

Rozalynn Goodwin | South Carolina Hospital Association

Rozalynn Goodwin | South Carolina Hospital Association

Technology–A Hero’s Superpower | CalhounTime is a precious commodity for everyday heroes! We have to use every tool (or superpower) available to make the most of the time we have! Technology is a great ally in making our lives efficient and effective as we serve others. Specifically, we will take a look at Office Online and Office 365 as affordable tools to improve productivity and collaboration within our organizations, as well as with those we serve!

Angela Watkins | WeKnowIT

It Takes a Village: Supporting Families in Rural Communities | PinckneyThis session will share practices utilized by a nonprofit organization based on an intergenerational approach to service delivery in rural communities. Mama Said: Important Leadership Lessons from Mom | Carolina ALeadership is not our title or rank in an organization, it is putting the well-being of another ahead of ourselves― something I learned from my mother. It is also about taking action, developing yourself and others, knowing your strengths, committing yourself and choosing your battles. In this session, explore how leadership can be found in everyday places and how to use the lessons your mama taught you to be a better leader.

Tricia Richardson | SC Thrive

Loving Our Neighbor: Servant or Sucker | Carolina BDuring this interactive workshop, you will learn about funds of knowledge, three mantras for helping, the three Vs, the A-B-Cs of helping, three levels of addressing poverty, five factors of poverty and, when necessary, how to say no in helpful ways using L.E.A.R.N.

Beth Templeton | Our Eyes Were Opened, Inc.

Two Things to Make Your Training Terrific | CalhounTraining is no small task. With preparing training materials, recruiting registrants, and organizing training logistics, it can quickly become an all-consuming (but enjoyable!) responsibility. In this session, you will learn how to utilize and access training resources to make training facilitation easier and more interactive! Whether you train one person or 200 people, this session will help you learn about resources and techniques to improve your trainings!

Kristine Henry | SC Thrive

Improving Your Financial Health | Carolina BIf you have ever worked with clients that at the end of the month have month left over and no money, this workshop is for you. Too many consumers feel like their situation is hopeless and are depressed about their finances. This workshop will give attendees the tools needed to improve the financial well-being of their clients.

Brendan Vigorito | Money Management International

Discovering the Treasure: Engaging High Capacity Volunteers | Carolina AVolunteers are the life-blood of our organizations and provide the fuel for fulfilling our missions, yet many organizations are baffled when it comes to engaging “high-capacity” volunteers: attorneys, accountants, social workers, professional fundraisers and others that our organizations really need! Sure, they are more than willing to do anything we ask, but are we being good stewards of their skills by their placements? This workshop will identify strategies to invite, equip, engage and sustain high capacity volunteers in faith-based organizations (and others).

Working Together to Change Who Waits in Foster Care | Carolina AEvery child deserves a loving family every day, but every day hundreds of kids in South Carolina’s foster care system are waiting to be placed in safe and caring homes. There is a solution. The church & child welfare can help team up to change who waits. Learn how they, together, can recruit more than enough quality families so it’s the grown-ups who are on the waiting list, not the kids.

This workshop will introduce seven factors in grant research, grant focus, grant writing and follow-through that most grant funders seek. There IS grant funding available for our organizations, but organizational leaders have difficulty in finding the magic combination in their proposals. This workshop will help remove the guesswork to help create “grant heroes.”

Put Your Own Air Mask on First–A Hero’s Guide to Burnout Prevention | PinckneyIf you’ve flown, you’ve heard a flight attendant describe how to use an air mask. And because many sources of rejuvenation are free and portable, you can take care of yourself even during your busiest days. In this workshop, we’ll share and practice simple ways to care for yourself. You’ll leave with a mini-action plan.
