Welcome to September issue of BN5 magazine. It’s a busy time of year as the school holidays draw to an end and we’re wondering how on earth the children have managed to grow so much since June - or perhaps we’re saying goodbye to older teenagers as they make their way to university. Busy times - and the village is starting to get busy too with clubs and groups starting back after the summer break and new events filling our What’s On pages.

The highlight of our summer was the Village Fayre in July. We couldn’t have been luckier with the weather and Henfield Common was packed with crowds of visitors and villagers. It was great to see so many local faces, thanks for visiting us at the BN5 stand and for helping us with our fundraising for The Haven daycare centre. We hope you enjoyed the day. The team of organisers, led by Mike Morgan from Henfield Parish Council, created a fantastic village event. Mike has decided to stand down from his role as organiser due to his commitments at Horsham District Council. If anyone is interested in stepping up to help run this great event in two years time, please do contact the Parish Council office.

At the time of going to press I attended a celebration at the newly named Haven Daycare Centre. It’s officially been put in the hands of the Henfield team who will be running this great local resource. We’ll let you know more next issue, or please go to our website bn5magazine.co.uk for a report there.

Enjoy September!

THANK YOU TO LOCAL DOG WALKERI would like to pass my sincere thanks to a lady dog walker who greatly assisted me after I had a fall on Henfield Common on Saturday 4 July. The lady had a large white dog and was most kind in assisting me back to the high street. I would love to buy her chocolates as a thank you – but as I do not know who she is then I hope this thank you via BN5 magazine suffices. Ian Thomson, Rayner Court

HAVE YOU GOT YOUR BN5 ‘DAVE’ SHOPPER?Those of you who came to visit us at the Summer Fayre in July will have seen our rather lovely shopping bags that feature BN5 dog Dave. Available in three gorgeous colours (blue, pink or orange) these shoppers not only look fantastic, but they are also raising money for a very worthy local cause – the Henfield Haven (formerly Henfield Day Centre). We still have some bags available to buy, either from the BN5 office or from our lovely friends at Pinks hairdressers on the High Street. At only £1 a bag, not only will you be doing your bit for

DARK STAR HOPFEST RETURNS Our annual Hopfest weekender will return to the brewery on 26-27 September from 11am -6pm both days. And don’t forget the launch night on Friday 25 September from 7pm at The Partridge pub in Partridge Green, where the season’s first barrel of Green Hop will be tapped and you’ll probably spot most of the Dark Star team there too!Hopfest marks the launch of our Green Hop beer, made from hops fresh from the fields. You’ll be able to sample loads of our beers, including Green Hop, as well as some amazing guest beers. For the food, think a massive hog roast and top-notch locally-made pies, scotch eggs, Pizza, cheese twists and more. Just the right size to grab with your non-beer hand. It’s no secret that Hopfest has become a festival showcasing top local music too, and if you were impressed with last year’s bands, you’ll be blown away this time! Expect mostly folk, a bit of rock and some country, from bands playing right here in the centre of the brewery throughout the day. Morris Men will interlude the music throughout the day to deliver traditional stick-banging fun. But if you think you’ve seen it all before, think again, as the legendary Mythago Morris Men will be returning in their unique, gothic…and slightly scary fashion!

As always Lorna, Les and the rest of the shop team will be on hand to help with any t-shirts, hoodies or beer that you’d like to purchase on the day, including a Hopfest 2015 souvenir t shirt. Our brewers will be milling around and only too happy to show you ‘behind the scenes’. Well-behaved and supervised dogs and kids are always welcome to come along, but we do ask you keep an eye on them at all times and on a lead (dogs that is!).James Cuthbertson

CHANGES TO WORSHIP TIMES AT ST PETERS CHURCH, HENFIELDAll are welcome to services at St Peter’s Church, Henfield whether young, old, single, married, disabled, those who mostly have a strong faith, and those who are not so sure, and even those who have never contemplated church very often. In celebrating our diversity we have decided to make changes to the times and types of services we offer, which we hope will make it possible to bring more people together each week to discover more about ourselves and God in thankfulness, joy, hope and love. The new worship times should be easier to remember and there really is something for everyone, from traditional, to contemplative, quiet and said services, to those with organ and choir or piano. For those who wish to stay after a service refreshments are available each week after the 10am service. These changes begin on Sunday 4 October when we will celebrate Harvest in Henfield and the pattern will be:Week 1: 10am - Celebrate! All Age Praise. A service designed for the whole family using songs, hymns, activities, prayers and a short talk and lasting about 45 minutes.- 6.30pm - Quiet, said service of Holy Communion. A contemporary said service including readings, prayers a short sermon and the sharing of bread and wine.Week 2: 8.30am - Holy Communion. A traditional said service of communion using the 1662 Book of

Page 14: BN5 September 15

It has been a fantastic year so far at the Shepherd and Dog, David and Emily have pushed forward with some great changes to the bar and garden and

we’ve enjoyed some big successes with our festival season over the very sunny summer.

The Cider Festival, our very stylish Gin and Jazz Festival and of course the annual Beer Festival in August have become ‘go to’ events in the local calendar. We’re proud of our reputation for great craft beers, interesting and rare gins (we have one of the biggest ranges in Sussex, including the fantastic Brighton Gin which we twin with juniper berries) and a huge array of small batch ciders. The festivals are celebrations of these great drinks, as well as a way to introduce you all to some fantastic new and unusual brewers and producers. Not forgetting the music, food and great company!

You’ll have noticed some big changes in the bar, with the introduction of our ‘locals’ bar’ – complete with comfortable sofas and a dedicated 12 tap font dispensing a rolling selection of kegged craft ales, lagers and ciders.

Earlier in the year we had the landscapers in, Our beautiful garden with its stream has always been incredibly popular, but now it’s wider and thankfully level – both customers and waiting staff are finding this a revelation! There’s now more room for weddings, functions and more space for marquees. There is no more perfect spot in Sussex than the Shepherd and Dog garden on a sunny Autumn day!

This Autumn will be very busy, we are starting on our upstairs conversion – which will give us a fine dining restaurant and a function space for 50. We hope to be ready for November and those Christmas parties! We hope you can join us.

Finally, we’d like to say a massive THANK YOU to all the local people and local businesses who have supported us this year. Thank you all for your encouragement and positive comments, without you all the changes would not have been possible.

HENFIELD FRIENDS OF ST BARNABASSo far this year we are pleased to report that a total of almost £1,800 has been raised by various functions including the annual Street Collection. We do appreciate your support and particularly the continuous support of C & T Radmall Funeral Services with their generous donations and assistance at our functions. Particular thanks go to Wendy and Ashley. Please lookout for further fund raising events for the rest of the year.

Peggy McComas

YEAR 6 LEAVING PARTY The Village Hall was ‘rockin’ on Monday 20 July as it was transformed into a 1950’s American Diner. The hall was beautifully decorated by the mums and Jasmine’s supplied lovely colourful balloons. The children were greeted by three mean looking ‘Teddy Boys’ at the door. They then had a 1950’s Jukebox/photobox courtesy of Tina, where the children could get a memory photo taken by Martin Abbs-Burton. They were taught how to ‘rock n roll’ by Karen Rogers. They tucked into cheeseburgers kindly donated by Nicky and Graham Woodley, and chips donated by Kebab Knight. They enjoyed freshly prepared

milkshakes with fruit from Jeremy’s and snacks from Budgens. Fresh popcorn was on ready supply. The teachers got in on the act dressed as the ‘Pink Ladies from Grease’ and then cut a fantastic 1950’s inspired cake created by Jo and Yve. The feedback from the children was “Awesome!”, “Best party ever!”The hard-working mums, Alice, Elaine, Jo, Jo, Katy, Marcia, Michelle, Teresa and Yve would like to thank everyone who helped them make it a memorable night for the children. We wish Year 6 all the very best of luck at their new schools in September. Elaine Telfer

NEW ACCESS ROAD TO THE LEISURE CENTREWhen the Leisure Centre was built some 25 years ago a promise was made to the residents of Northcroft that when monies became available a new road from the north to the Leisure Centre would be built to alleviate traffic in Northcroft. Since then the School has grown as has the Leisure Centre, the Tennis Club and the Football Club, all increasing the traffic in Northcroft. With the construction of the third phase of the St Peter’s Meadow development £100, 000 has been given to Henfield Parish Council to now build this road. After discussions with the Football Club and the Leisure Centre, who are in support of the proposal, the Parish Council now wish to proceed with this road which will also provide additional car parking at the rear of the Leisure Centre. The Parish Council wish to seek the views of the public and Initial plans of the proposed road and car parking will be on display in the Leisure Centre during the week commencing Monday 14 September. Parish Councillors will be in attendance from 7pm to 9pm on Monday 14 and Wednesday

16 September to answer your questions and listen to your views. There will also be a questionnaire available at the Leisure Centre throughout this week to ensure that we get the views of the local community. You can also email your comments to [email protected] should be noted that if this £100,000 is not spent on this road then the monies will be returned to the Developers. SUSSEX WOODCRAFT SOCIETY 30TH ANNIVERSARY SHOWIn 1985, four friends with interest in Woodcarving and Wood Turning decided to place an advertisement in the Mid-Sussex Times to suggest others might also be interested to exchange of Woodcraft skills who should meet at the Red Cross Hall in Burgess Hill. Over 30 people, male and female, turned up from all over Sussex. It was then agreed that a Club should be formed and called ‘The Sussex Woodcraft Society’. The Skills of the new Members included many differing Woodcraft interests: carving, woodturning, stick making, toys, furniture, musical instruments, pyrography, clocks and barometers, and many more.Since that time we have had an annual show including competition in many categories: carving in the round, relief carving, faceplate turning, woodturning between centres, abstract sculpture and most years we have had over 100 entries. The variety of work is astonishing and is assessed by independent judges with trophies and diplomas awarded in each category. Demonstrations and sales of works are also included on the day. Our 30th anniversary award show will be held on 19 September at Henfield Hall. Please come and enjoy our work. Admission is free as is car parking The Sussex Woodcraft Society meets the second Wednesday of each month at Cyprus Hall, Burgess Hill (except July and August). CLUBS CO-OPERATIONEvery Morris Dancing side has its own style of kit, often dependent on their history and traditions they dance. When the Chanctonbury Ring Morris Men (the Chancs’) were approached by the Museum of British Folklore to provide a dressed doll in their kit to display in a gallery within the museum, filled with all the figures of as many Morris teams as possible, they asked another local club to help out. To the rescue came Margaret Storey of Henfield Miniaturists Group (formerly the Henfield Dollshouse Project Group) who dressed two dolls: one in ‘Cotswold’ kit, the other in ‘NorthWest’ kit. Chancs’ Bagman Clive said: “We are delighted that Chancs could respond quickly to the request and are delighted what the Miniaturists have done for us.” The Museum of British Folklore hopes to open the completed gallery later next year, but meanwhile they are organising some shows of the figures with the first likely to be at the Weald & Downland Museum in early May 2016 – for more information see www.museumofbritishfolklore.co.uk Henfield Miniaturists Group meets once a month at Maidment Court and make not only dolls’ house things, but anything in miniature. Their main display is held during the Henfield Gardens and Arts Festival each June. Contact June Smith on

01903 816954 to find out more. Chanctonbury Ring Morris Men is an all-male side based in central Sussex. Most of our dancing is done in pub gardens and car parks in the country towns and villages up to about 15 miles from Brighton, although we have been known to venture much further afield in search of a good pub! Our regular dancing night is Wednesday. Email [email protected] for more details.Clive Funnell

Don’t miss it; please put the dates in your diary. Tickets will be on sale at Henfield Furnishings from 28 September.Martin Love

HENFIELD’S ALARM CLOCK IS FOUND A HOME...We’d like to say a very big thank you to The Old Gardens Rescue Centre in Sidlesham near Chichester who have kindly taken in the stray cockerel that someone had abandoned in Henfield. For some weeks we appealed to find the owner with no success - he was quite vocal and acting as a 4am alarm call in various places around the village! The wonderful Irene has taken him to join her huge array of animals; chickens, quails, pigs, sheep, rabbits, goats and geese. Juthy visited and was really impressed with the kindness of Irene and how beautifully looked after all the abandoned animals are. If you are very grateful to Irene for giving Henfield’s cockerel a new home (and if you’re now getting a bit of a lie-in!) please send her a small donation, she desperately needs help to keep going (check out her Facebook page for more information). Thank you Irene! Editor

HENFIELD PARISH COUNCIL NEWS Another wonderful Summer Show is now behind us and the residents of Henfield can reflect on another magnificent day in village history. The people turned up in huge numbers, the sun shone, the sheep danced, the pints of beer and burgers were produced in large volumes by the BP Guild, and the Women’s Institute matched them with cups of tea and plates of cake. Many local organisations raised much-needed funds for their coffers, the bands entertained and the Punch and Judy tent seemed as popular with children as it ever has been. Throw in the Show Tent, the Dog Show, the Classic Cars, the Obstacle Race and there was surely something for everyone. There is however a reason why this event is only held every two years. The planning is months in the making and the volunteers are short in supply. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Mike Morgan for not just Chairing the Organising Committee in 2015, but for doing so for the past 20 years! Mike has now decided to step down from this role with immediate effect, so we will be looking for a replacement in 2017. Big shoes to fill!Henfield Parish Council’s Museum Committee is currently updating the popular ‘Henfield Guide and Map,’ which will contain information about local organisations, a brief history of the village and will be delivered to all households in the Parish later in the year. If you have set up an organisation in the past three or four years and would like to be included in the new Guide, please contact the Parish Office on 01273 492507 or email [email protected] finally, did you know that Henfield Fire Brigade was founded by Henfield Parish Council in 1904? Chanctonbury Rural District Council took it over in 1942 and it then became part of the West Sussex Fire Brigade in 1948. The Henfield Fire Brigade is currently staffed by retained fire fighters, who each live or work within a four minute car journey of the station and provide an invaluable service to Henfield and the surrounding area.Kevin Wright

SELF HELP GROUP NEWSOur annual summer outing this year was on 9 July to Bentley Wildfowl Sanctuary and Motor Museum, east of Lewes. Over 50 of us boarded the coach for a very interesting day out.The Motor Museum was fascinating, from the penny-farthing bicycles and earliest of cars (of the sort which would have been proceeded by

a red flag), to every type of car up to the 1980’s. There was even a huge, deeply carved, wooden and glass Irish Hearse – very old but still in use. With beautiful weather we all enjoyed a good lunch outside in the sun and then walked round the large attractive area of the wildfowl Sanctuary with its amazing variety of different birds, some with tiny chicks. A well recommended place for a family day out, with a children’s play area and a miniature steam railway open at weekends.Bren Holloway

WEDDINGS AT HENFIELD MUSEUM 1902 and 1932. Two wedding dresses. Two brides from different worlds. One marriage between ‘below stairs’ and ‘upstairs’. The other, a privileged couple, many wedding gifts: cut glass claret jug, cocktail shaker, beer glasses, a lemonade set, not forgetting hot drinks - the ‘staff’ gave them a morning tea set… they had an excellent start to married life (and were never thirsty!).Mr and Mrs 1902 began married life in a fairy tale, but had no happy ending. You can see from our picture of her and her five children what a pretty young woman Mrs 1902 was. The younger son of a well off family married her and rescued her from life as a maid. They lived in India, where he served in the army. Cholera took him and she returned

to England to rejection by his family, poverty and a life of misery. Wealth does not guarantee happiness, but we know that Mr and Mrs 1932 had two children and from their photographs they look happy together.Mrs 1902 kept her dress: high fashion of its time, with whitework embroidery, high neck, long sleeves and tiny waist, it has not been altered, nor does it show any signs of wear. Perhaps it was a last link to her old life or more prosaically something that could be pawned again and again. Mrs 1932’s outfit was kept too. She was resplendent in a lace mobcap and veil, a cream chiffon and old lace dress (the lace was from her mother’s 1898 wedding dress) and she wore silk stockings. The stockings are in perfect condition, suggesting she only wore them once. Both dresses have local connections and there is more to see in the case. So if you like weddings and a good story, visit Henfield Museum. Stephanie Richards

HENFIELD NEIGHBOURHOOD PLANThe Henfield Neighbourhood Plan has passed the independent examination stage and has been approved for final publication by both Henfield Parish and Horsham District Councils. Reference copies are available in the Parish Office and Library, or can be downloaded from the Henfield Hub www.henfieldhub.com/key-information/plan-referendum. The referendum whether or not to approve the plan will be held on Tuesday 22nd September in the Henfield Hall. All those on the electoral register in Henfield Parish are eligible to vote. If more than 50% of those voting are in favour, the Plan will be adopted.

KINDERSLEY CHARITABLE TRUSTThe Kindersley Trust is a Charitable Trust, the object of which is to benefit the inhabitants of Henfield. It does not make grants to individuals but towards projects of organisations who benefit residents of all ages in our community. Last year, grants totalling £3,015 were made. To Henfield Cricket Club towards the cost of purchase of new nets (£585), to St Peter’s School towards the purchase of staging (£500), to Henfield Community Partnership for the purchase of a laptop and associated software for use at the Computer Club (£430) and to Henfield Youth Club towards the new gas boiler project (£1500). The Committee does not make grants towards running expenses but will be happy to consider applications from organisations for assistance towards specific projects or needs. This years meeting is in early December. Written applications giving details of the project or need should be sent to the Chairman, Kindersley Trust, c/o Griffith Smith Farrington Webb LLP of Croft House, High Street, Henfield, BN5 9DJ, to arrive before Friday, 13th November 2015.

The phrase ‘football’s not just for boys’ rang true in impressive style this

summer when the nation was captivated by the success of the England Women’s team. Their thrilling performances in the FIFA Women’s World Cup, coming third in the tournament after a nail-biting semi-final against Japan which had all football fans on the edge of their seats, proved that the women’s game can be just as exciting and addictive as the men’s.

Henfield ladies may not have quite the signings and the following as the England squad but as far as grass-roots football goes, they are very much holding up the side. The team has struggled for numbers in the past, but the new resurgence in the national game has given the club huge momentum and generated great interest in the sport. Henfield are well placed to strengthen their squad this season and work to improve the quality of their football and their position in the league. They are determined and competitive, much like their men’s team counterparts.Manager player Tracey Prescott intends to keep this enthusiasm going. She’s been managing Henfield teams for the last 15 years, since getting involved when her daughter Charlie was at school. “I love ladies football. It’s a brilliant way to keep fit, it’s social and we have the most fantastic fun. Henfield Football Club is great, we have huge support from them and it’s a real team effort for all of us.”Creating a team and sustaining it season after season is no mean feat and there must be a solid number of players in the squad to be able to fulfill the fixtures. Tracey knows many of the women have work and family commitments to think of, so it’s sometimes a juggle for them to make the matches and the evening training sessions. She relies on Pete Mowatt, an old friend who has been involved with Henfield girls and ladies teams for

some time, as well as Kenny Wyatt, as coaches. The striking pink and black kit (a variation on HFC’s regular black and white) is well known throughout the league. In previous years Casco Aviation generously sponsored their kit. The girls are now in need of a new strip, so if there are any local businesses that’d like to be aligned with this great team, they’d love to hear from you. It’s a great opportunity to get involved with an up and coming team who are showing the boys how it’s done.In the sun of the summer world cup in Canada this year it’s easy to see how football is a great game to watch and play, but what’s the motivation to turn up for training on a drizzly November evening? “Above all, it’s brilliant fun,” said Tracey. “We are serious about our football and always strive to win. My proudest moment with the team was when we won the league Sportsmanship Award. Our opposing teams in the league vote for this so it was a huge honour to receive the award. We work hard, have fun and we’re always courteous to the other teams. We uphold the rules of fair play and respect, so it was great to be rewarded in this way.”Sounds interesting? Please get in touch with Tracey Prescott 07944 372927, all levels and experience (or no experience!) welcome. Training takes place on Thursday nights 7-8.30pm at the Kingsfield and matches take place on Sunday afternoons.Emma Osman

Sunshine at THE

Henfield Fayre

The Henfield Village Fayre and Show on Saturday was a fantastic success. The sun shone on Henfield Common and record crowds flocked to

enjoy a traditional village day out, it seemed as if the whole village was there! The show tent was full of delicious looking baked exhibits as well as arts, crafts, produce and some wonderful ‘vegetable aliens’ and creative entries from younger Henfield residents. Members of the WI did a wonderful job of stewarding the event, as well as serving hundreds of cups of tea and slices of coffee and walnut cake. The ever-popular dog show left Jonathan Underwood from Hawthorn Vets with the unenviable task of selecting ‘Best small breed’ and ‘Most obedient dog’ amongst others – with over 50 perfect pooches in just one class it was almost impossible to decide. There have never been more entries! HJ Burt sponsored and Henfield Lions Club was in charge of organisation, which they managed magnificently.Henfield’s finest charities and clubs were out in force with coconut shies, raffles, tombola’s, treasure hunts, crafts and goodies for children to spend their pocket money on – there was even a ‘snail race’ at the St Peter’s School stand. Local businesses who sponsored the show, including Rushfields Farm Shop, Henfield Fencing, Coles Automotive and Perry Plumbers, PHB Contractors and Swains Farm supported the fayre with their stands and help transporting the tents, tables and chairs. This year saw a new addition – the wonderful Sheep Show, which was funny and informative as well as having the ‘ahh’ factor of some wonderful four legged characters. As always, Henfield’s BP Guild ran the bar and barbecue, serving hundreds of pints and hundreds of burgers. The funds raised on the day go towards the Senior Citizen’s day out and other charitable work around the village. Photograph Juthy Slaughter

Triflow Engineering Cup for age 7-9 years; Tom Helps won the Richwards Estate Agents Cup for age 10-12; Megan Burchett won the Budgens Cup for age 13-16; and the Mitchell Family won the Family Competition with their fabulous scarecrow! It only remains to say an enormous ‘bravo’ to Henfield Parish Council, the organisers, led by Mike Morgan, and their team of volunteers who helped make the day happen. They gave up many, many hours before the event to make sure everything ran smoothly, as well as working incredibly hard on the day. We are so grateful for all their hard work, now for a rest before starting to organise 2017!Emma Osman

Visitors to our BN5 stand donated £1 to the Henfield Haven daycare centre in return for a Dave the Dog BN5 eco-shopper and a go at our ‘find Dave’ game to win a bag of Sussex goodies. We raised £351, with donations still coming in! If you’d like a bag they are available from Pinks Hairdressers, Village Care and Cornerweighs for a £1 donation to the Haven. It was fantastic to see everyone, thank you for your support. There were a great number of entries to the show and too many winners to mention here. However the children’s winners deserve a special mention: Harrison Clowe won the BN5 Magazine Cup for age 6 years and under; Marisa Meinecke won the

Hear to ListenNicki Dowd, Registered Counsellor in Henfield

As the summer draws to a close and we head into crisp, autumn mornings

it might be a time when some are experiencing a great deal of change. This may involve various activities that we do every year without much thought. However, we might also be faced with a life-changing event that is having a greater effect on us than we anticipated. A change that we consider welcome and beneficial, something that we have been working towards for years but, when it arrives, there is some dissonance between our hearts and our heads. I wonder how many of you who are reading this, have recently purchased a school uniform for the first time? Whether your eldest or youngest is starting reception, moving on to the challenges of senior school or, dare I say it, spreading their wings, taking that leap of faith and going off to join like minded people at university, I wonder what impact this may be having on the way you feel? Of course we want our children to be successful, happy and achieve their potential but where does this leave you? Your previous experience will have an influence on how you might feel about moving into a different phase of life. Often when there is a significant change for one member of a family it has repercussions for the others.

Are you left feeling abandoned or wondering what your role is now that you no longer have the same domestic tasks to perform? Are you left feeling disappointed and that whilst others are forging ahead with their new experiences you are left reflecting that your useful life is over and wondering what the future holds for you? The pain of this transition can be complicated and unsettling. The mourning of a passing era can often feel like a visceral wrench, a physical queasy experience that leaves you feeling hollow. Experiencing profound loss of purpose and identity is not uncommon and there are many ways in which this can be addressed. Counselling can help you get your feelings in perspective and help you explore ways of adjusting to your new role in your child’s life as well as changes in your identity as a parent. Whether you are just feeling unsettled about the changes life can bring or believe you are in crisis, counselling can help. For more information or to book a free 30 min no obligation consultation please contact me on 07858 420861 or email me at [email protected]

Hall and has a full and varied calendar of speakers throughout the year. This year the ladies have heard talks about the Land Girls, the intriguingly named ‘Wheelbarrow Man’, early female aviators, Sussex feasting and HART as well as taking part in craft demonstrations. In addition to these monthly meetings, the WI also has two book groups, two walking groups, a scrabble group and a craft group! The group also organises trips out for members.

The Women’s Institute celebrates its centenary this year and the Woodmancote & Henfield WI will be celebrating in style with a celebration cream tea

and social at their meeting in September. Women join the WI for different reasons and at different times of their lives: Local member Pauline Murphy joined the WI back in 1968 when she was a young mum looking to meet new people. “There are plenty of opportunities in the WI if you take them” she explained. “Someone asked me to give a talk and at first I refused. But then my husband encouraged me to do it and I ended up giving talks for 30 years!” Fellow member Val Creek didn’t join until she retired: “The WI gives you fantastic friendship and lots of fun and we all look out for each other.” She went on: “It’s a great way of meeting people if you move into an area and you’ll always find some activities that you enjoy.” The WI has had a presence in Woodmancote and Henfield off and on since the early part of the twentieth century. The group meets on the third Wednesday of every month at the Henfield

Not your cup of tea? Think again…The Women’s Institute was formed in 1915 during the First World War to encourage countrywomen to get involved in growing and preserving food for the war torn country. After the war the WI broadened out into more of a campaigning organisation, encouraging women to take an active part in society and looking out for the more vulnerable. In the 1920’s the WI was already campaigning on oil pollution and free school meals for school children, as well as calling for public telephone boxes in every village. They passed a resolution in 1943 calling for equal pay for equal work and passed a resolution banning smoking in public places in 1964. In 1975 they started informing members about the importance of breast examination and they were one of the first organisations to talk about AIDS, educating people through their networks. More recent campaigns have included: More Midwives; SOS for Honeybees; Care not Custody; Climate Change; and Dementia Friendly Communities. Being a part of the WI is an opportunity to broaden your horizons. As well as their monthly meetings, the WI has a residential college – Denman College – that offers courses on a wide range of subjects including horticulture, film, astronomy, photography, music and literature as well as the more traditional craft and cookery. See www.thewi.org.uk for more information.

Perhaps the Woodmancote & Henfield WI are most famous for their involvement in the bi-annual Henfield Summer Fayre. Not only do they run the show tent with its numerous categories and entries, but they also run the tea tent: the vast array of rolls, scones, cakes and refreshments they have on offer is quite legendary! “It’s really quite a sociable occasion and most of our members get involved on the day,” said Pauline. “Our members are fantastic bakers and we also cater for groups visiting the village throughout the year.”During 2015, Woodmancote & Henfield WI members are committing to both group and personal challenges – 100 challenges for 100 years. These include planting primroses on Barrow Hill, donating items to charity shops, knitting rugs for older people, collecting books for Henfield Medical Centre and one member is swimming 100 lengths to raise money for the Association of Country Women of the World (ACWW). “It’s all

about getting out into the wider community to help other people” explained Val.The ladies of Woodmancote & Henfield WI are a very friendly bunch, so do pop along to one of their monthly meetings or call Val on 01273 958202 to find out more.Sarah Butler

This year Reflexology Awareness Week focuses on healthy ageing and how reflexology can benefit us as we grow older. Ageing is a natural process but we often hear the negative side to growing old, such as the increased risk of developing heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and arthritis. However it is important to remember that the ageing process does not always have to mean negative decline and that the ageing body still has a great capacity for regeneration and self healing. A healthy diet, exercising regularly, getting a good night’s rest, learning a new skill, socialising and having fun can help us to age well. Reflexology too can play an important part in helping us to stay healthy for longer. Reflexology is a natural healing art, based on the principle that there are reflex areas in the feet and hands which correspond to all organs and parts of the body. Reflexology involves the application of pressure to specific reflexes in the feet or hands to encourage the body’s innate healing ability.

Reflexology is a non-invasive therapy where only footwear needs to be removed and can be carried out in a sitting or reclining position, wherever the person feels comfortable. It works on an individual basis and may alleviate and improve symptoms, such as everyday stress and tension. This in itself can help slow the ageing process. Rest and relaxation are vital in restoring mind and body and when we are relaxed our body’s healing mechanisms switch on. As we age, the body naturally slows down, but we want to avoid it slowing down too much and becoming sluggish. During a reflexology session the circulation and nerves are stimulated, this in turn can promote healing, help improve daily activities and relieve joint stiffness and pain. Most importantly, reflexology gives us time to ourselves and the space to put our thoughts into perspective, allowing us to cope better with everyday life.

Walkers and cyclists who use the Downs Link will probably spot the clues that this recreational path once had a totally different use - in fact it was the

route of a branch line between Horsham and Brighton during the heyday of the railways. Few will probably be fully aware of the line’s history and cultural associations with Henfield and the surrounding villages. This book works on many levels. The train enthusiast will learn about the line’s construction, engines, carriages, route, stations, timetables and signalling, and enjoy its 120 illustrations, most of which I have not seen in other publications. However, it is far more than just another book for railway enthusiasts. It has not only been extremely well researched but is also a highly personal account by someone who grew up with the railway, been enchanted by it as a small boy and later relied on it to get to school, travel to work and go on holiday. The book brings the railway to life. It provides an insight into the lives of the railway’s passengers, especially those from Henfield. For example, in discussing timetables, the book doesn’t just list the times of the trains but describes the passengers who would have used a particular service and why. It describes how changes in timetables and journey times affected the lives of those who used the line. It documents how the re-building of London Bridge station with its main line service to Brighton had knock-on impacts with severe delays down the line in the days when trains (especially branch line trains) made a point of connecting with the main line. Delays caused by re-building London Bridge is something present day travellers on the Brighton line can still relate to!

The book contains many anecdotes of local interest. It describes in fascinating detail stories of navvies and other contractors who descended on sleepy Sussex to build the railway. There is the story of the lane (now Upper Station Road) being very narrow from the Church to the station. Some landowners were opposed to having it widened, with claims of skulduggery at the Parish Council, as a motion to widen the road was agreed with no notice and no objectors present! There are pictures and descriptions of a separate narrow gauge line connecting the station to nearby sandpits - it was certainly news to me that Henfield ever had a narrow gauge line. There are stories of using the line to get to school and the high jinks and luggage rack gymnastics that occurred on (and sometimes off) the trains! The author describes what it was like to travel on the line in war time with blackouts in place and the damage from air raids. In summary, the book bears very favourable comparison with other publications about the line and it will be of immense interest to both railway enthusiasts and anyone interested in local history alike.Reviewed by Dave ParkerHenfield’s Wonderful Railway by EJ Colgate, £15, available from Henfield Post Office

Recently, Annelise and I have found ourselves on the other side of the consulting room table and it has proved

quite an enlightening experience! Our German Shorthaired Pointer, “Scout”, who is quite often at the centre of most of the controversy in our house was once again the instigator of the situation…

Scout developed a recurrent lameness of her left fore-leg and was painful on examination of her elbow. We decided to take some x-rays to assess things further and as is commonplace when anaesthetising a middle-aged dog, we took the opportunity to remove a lump on her behind and give her teeth a good clean. It’s certainly a bit of a reality check seeing your own dog on the operating table and it’s a healthy reminder of how and why we get so anxious when dropping our pets off for a procedure.

Fortunately, all went well with the procedure and the x-rays were normal - however, that’s when the trouble started! We made the cardinal mistake of not

A stitch in time…. Isn’t always enough….reading the discharge instructions which had been painstakingly written out by one of our dedicated nursing staff. We assumed that Scout would be a model patient and not pay any attention at all to the wound where the lump was removed! Clearly that was not the case and she duly took the opportunity to have a good old lick at it. By the time we had applied a “collar of shame”, it was too late and the wound had already opened. Some skin staples were applied to no avail – Scout’s natural bounciness contrived to pull the wound edges apart and there was nothing to be done but book her in for the “re-stitch of disgrace”.

As the perpetrator of the initial operation, it was down to Annelise to rescue the situation. She went for the “belt and braces approach” with no less than 3 layers of stitching. Alas, a few days later and despite a course of antibiotics, there was further wound breakdown. I’m sure that this had nothing to do with the fact that Scout was seen at least 3 times out of the garden, chasing rabbits and everything to do with a poor healing environment for the wound… What followed was 3 weeks, 4 “buster” collars, several broken ornaments and countless bruises on lower legs while the wound closed up naturally. As with most patients, Scout quickly became resigned to her “buster” collar and tolerated it very well. As with most pet owners, we never became accustomed to the “buster” collar and were regularly considering its removal for our own sanity, even when Scout wasn’t particularly bothered!

The whole experience certainly put things in perspective and since then, I make a special effort to see things from the perspective of the person to whom I am preaching not just the practitioner! Despite all that, it is worth taking note of the fact that while many of the post operative instructions we give out may seem tedious, they are there for good reason. Adhering to them may just help avoid some of the shenanigans above!

As the Chancellor delivered the first all-Conservative Budget since 1996, we saw more flexing of party muscles coupled with a few trademark tax

surprises. The surprises included a further reduction in the rate of Corporation Tax to an all time low of 18% in 2020, an increase in the rate of Income Tax on dividends and the restriction of tax relief on interest payments for buy-to-let landlords.Annual Investment Allowance (AIA) - The AIA is the allowance available to almost all businesses, whether companies, partnerships, or individuals, and regardless of size, which enables them to write off in full for tax purposes their capital expenditure on plant and machinery. The current limit of £500,000 was set to revert to £25,000 from 1 January 2016. This will now be £200,000. There are some relatively complicated provisions for calculating the AIA where the business’ accounts year straddles 31 December. Expenditure above the limit attracts Capital Allowances in the normal way. Profitable businesses investing over £200,000 in plant should review their programmes and where possible adjust the timing of expenditure to maximise their AIA in the period up to 31 December 2015.Employment Allowance due to increase to £3,000 with anti-avoidance measures strengthened - All employers are currently able to claim a reduction in their employer’s National Insurance bill by £2,000 each year. Two changes have been announced in the Summer Budget – firstly, this is due to increase to £3,000 per year; and secondly, it can no longer be claimed by companies where the sole employee is the director.Inheritance Tax - The introduction of a main residence nil-rate band when a residence is passed to direct descendants will be introduced from 2017/18 and will be increased year on year until it reaches £175,000, and then in line with CPI from 2021/22. The unused nil-rate band can be passed to a surviving spouse or partner, and will be available when a person downsizes or ceases to own a home and assets of an equivalent value are passed to descendants. There will be tapered withdrawal of the relief for estates with a net value of more than £2million. The Government will continue to freeze the Inheritance Tax nil-rate band at £325,000 until April 2021.Taxation of dividends - The increase of taxation on dividends was a shock announcement that came without warning. From April 2016, dividend taxation is changing. The changes are:

There will be a dividend tax allowance of £5,000 meaning that each individual can receive £5,000 of dividends tax free; After the £5,000 allowance, dividends are

taxed at a rate of 7.5% for basic rate taxpayers, 32.5% for higher rate taxpayers and 38.1% for additional rate taxpayers (i.e. overall income above £150,000); The notional 10% dividend tax credit is being

abolished. With these new rules, the effective rates of tax on profit extraction are 6% higher when using a company when compared to operating as a Limited Liability Partnership so we may once again return to the tax regime having an influence on the choice of business structure for owner managed businesses. The 6% increase in overall tax reduces a little as the Corporation Tax rate reduces to 19% in 2017 and 18% in 2020, but there will still be an additional cost of 4% – 5% when compared with the current regime. This change is also likely to give more people an obligation to complete a self-assessment Tax Return as basic rate taxpayers currently have no Income Tax payable on dividends whereas now, if the dividend is in excess of £5,000 then the 7.5% tax rate will apply.Restriction on loan interest relief for buy-to-let landlords - The restrictions will be introduced incrementally from 6 April 2017 and, by tax year 2020/21, relief for all financing costs incurred by landlords will be available for a basic rate tax deduction only. The changes impact let property in the UK and overseas, but exclude those which meet the conditions for furnished holiday lettings.Rent-a-Room relief extended - Available to taxpayers who let out a room in their own home, Rent-a-Room relief will be increased to £7,500 of gross rents (up from the current £4,250 limit) from April 2016. With the limit frozen for the past 18 years, Rent-a-Room relief was overdue for an increase and the change will also be welcomed by taxpayers who let out a spare room from their main home.
