Here are the BMW Sauber F1 Team drivers of the 2009 season: Robert Kubica, Poland, 24 years old, 4th place in the 2008 Formula 1 World Championships! Nick Heidfeld, Germany, 32 years old, 6th place in the 2008 Formula 1 World Championships. The third man and test pilot of the BMW Sauber F1 Team is Christian Klien, Austria, 26 years old. 3rd place in the 2008 Le Mans 24 hours. BMW Sauber F1 Team: Fighting for the top in 2009! The financial and economic crisis has not had much of an impact on For- mula 1 as a whole: 17 Grand Prix rac- es are scheduled with the first being held in Melbourne on 29 March. Even after Honda pulled out, the field re- mains deep with Ferrari, McLaren- Mercedes and BMW Sauber as the front runners. The new season prom- ises to be interesting in terms of sports: Various rule changes ad- dressed in this article are cause for discussion. The BMW Sauber F1 Team, which achieved its ambitious goals last season with 11 podium place- ments (including a double win), is striving for the very top: Competing in the 2009 World Championships is on the agenda! A new option: KERS Starting with this season, teams are permitted to in- stall a kinetic energy recovering system (KERS) in their race cars. This system stores energy during braking and makes it available at the push of a button – for example when passing – which generates approxi- mately 80 additional horsepower over the short term. The disadvantages of the 30 kg weight of this unit and the change in the centre of gravity are still uncertain. From the point of view of a “normal user”, valuable know-how is being developed for the benefit of hy- brid technology and ultimately the environmental compatibility of motor vehicles for everyday use. While the teams haven’t fully developed the technol- ogy yet, the BMW Sauber F1 Team has advanced rela- tively far. Whether the KERS will actually be deployed as an optional element remains to be seen. Its deploy- ment will depend on racetrack characteristics and strategy. Aerodynamics The changes (see small image, top right) are apparent in comparison to the preceding model: The F1.09 ap- pears much more compact. Due to new rules, the downforce of the vehicles was drastically reduced. Ad- ditional winglets, chimneys, gill vents and barge- boards are a thing of the past. The front and rear wings were modified in order to increase overtaking. Drivers are now allowed to make two front wing ad- justments per lap, altering the pitch of the front wing angle over a six-degree range. Engines In order to further improve engine durability, the rev limits are cut from 19,000 to 18,000 rpm. Drivers will be limited to eight engines per season. Otherwise, any engine change will incur a 10-place grid penalty. The motors now have to be used during the Friday prac- tice sessions already. But the final word has not yet been spoken in terms of rules for the 2009 season. Several changes have already been dropped or amended. Tyres and test drives Racing purists can breathe a sigh of relief: Effective in 2009, Formula 1 returns to slicks. In theory, this result in approximately 10% more grip. However, this is partly offset by the cut in aerodynamics. Testing is not allowed during the season. This will mean more ex- citement for spectators: Since development must be concluded before the first race, more is left to chance. For more about the BMW Sauber Formula 1 Team, visit www.bmw-sauber-f1.com. With the F1.09, the BMW Sauber F1 Team intends to compete for the World Championship title! New: Only uniform slicks are now permitted KERS: Warning notices on the chassis of the F1.09 F1.09, left: More compact than its predecessor. New: Front winglets can be adjusted by up to 6º

Coming soon: SAP integrationAlthough they recognise the savings potential of systems such as the Toolshop, companies with an advanced organisation culture desire additional controls for incoming goods. This is why BMW Sauber intends to integrate the ERP system inter-face of the Brütsch/Rüegger Toolshop into its own SAP system.

Full utilisation of partnershipsCooperation as a “promotional supplier of the BMW Sauber F1 Team” is a true success story. For quality assurance purposes, we supplied STOLLE cast iron plates with custom T-slots, SYLVAC digi-tal interior gauges and Alufi x clamping systems in combination with coordinate measuring ma-chines in the measuring room; Jrenum hearing protection systems, the latex and Kevlar gloves

Shorten procurement processes with scanner solutions! In preparation for hard economic times, joint efforts to lower procure-ment process costs have dominated the agenda in our “promotional sup-plier” partnership with the BMW Sauber F1 Team. The “ProScan scan-ner solution” project in the main warehouse in Hinwil introduced in this article constitutes the focus of these efforts. The Brütsch/Rüegger “Occupational Safety” competence centre was presented with a special challenge by the new KERS energy recovery system: In order to protect the mechanics against possible leak-age current, the crew was equipped with latex and Kevlar gloves from Brütsch/Rüegger Tools.

Shorten the procurement processThe procurement process consists of several steps. Users of the Brütsch/Rüegger Toolshop are able to realise substantial savings by modelling their purchasing structure down to the cost centre, us-ing shopping lists for recurring orders etc. The data collection phase of the procurement process harbours the potential for additional sav-ings. This is where the Toolshop “ProScan” scan-ner solution comes in: Instead of visually moni-toring the minimum level of consumption materials and manually entering an order in the Toolshop when required, simply scan the Brütsch/Rüegger barcode on a tool upon removal using a handheld device. With Toolshop ProScan, the re-quired items can be transferred directly to our Toolshop at www.brw.ch from a local PC along with additional information such as cost centres or notes. This assures seamless integration into our process-oriented Toolshop.

The Toolshop ProScan solution: Barcodes on the Brütsch/Rüegger Tools items are scanned using the input unit and the data is then transferred from the PC to the Brütsch/Rüegger Toolshop via the Internet.

Hearing protection is mandatory!

The sign “Hearing protection is mandatory!” is ignored all too often! What may simply be con-sidered loud can cause serious hearing damage. Hearing damage does not depend on whether we perceive sound as pleasant or unpleasant, but on the amount of time our ears are exposed to it. The fact that noise causes stress is also fre-quently underestimated. Excessive noise inter-feres with concentration so that focusing on work becomes difficult. But all of this can be avoided. The right hearing protection is available for any type of noise. Products range from classic earmuff-style hear-ing protection to customised protection adapt-ed to the ear. The objection that hearing pro-tection is bothersome to wear or that it impedes

conversation with colleagues is frequently heard. But there is a solution to any problem. For example, “Jrenum” customised hearing pro-tection features a high level of wearer comfort since it is individually adapted to the ear and does not cause uncomfortable pressure. With Jrenum hearing protection, you can talk on the phone or to colleagues without removing your hearing protection. Are you looking for on-site consultation at your place of business, right where the noise is? Con-tact our specialist Mr. Marc Hugelshofer, phone 044 736 64 48 or [email protected].

CoroMill 316 – smart milling!

The most important part of a shaft cutter is the front part – the head! This is why SANDVIK COROMANT developed the CoroMill 316 with a replaceable cutting head. It is easy to replace without dimensioning changes. This results in a significant reduction of downtime. The patented cut surface also ensures maximum stability and safety. A polished thread guarantees ultimate precision and bending stiffness since it re-sults in full surface contact (planar contact).

Hero or Crash Pilot?

Theo Bergauer, excellence expert

Chesley Sullenberger and excellenceNew York, January 15, 3:27 pm. Shortly after takeoff, both engines of the Airbus A 320 fail. The airplane crashes. Chesley Sullenberger manages what very few can do: He ditches the fully occupied plane on the Hudson River. 155 passengers are saved and owe their lives to a man who proceeded with incomparable confi dence in this extremely critical situation. All of us sometimes face diffi cult situations in our professional or private lives. Whether we are heroes or crash pilots is a matter of excel-lence. But this does not mean that confi dent people are perfect. Sovereignty means think-ing and acting independently. And taking the initiative, especially in a crisis – like Chesley Sullenberger.

Seminar and wind tunnelAs part of a seminar sponsored by ForumBlech (www.forumblech.ch) and IFU (Institute for Met-al Forming Technology) to be held in Hotel Kreuz Jona on Tuesday, 5 May 2009, Brütsch/Rüegger Tools invites you to tour the wind tunnel of the BMW Sauber F1 Team in Hinwil. Request your seminar documentation under reference number 01.03 today – limited registration!

Here are the BMW Sauber F1 Team drivers of the 2009 season:Robert Kubica, Poland, 24 years old, 4th place in the 2008 Formula 1 World Championships!

BMW Sauber F1 Team: Fighting for the top in 2009!The fi nancial and economic crisis has not had much of an impact on For-mula 1 as a whole: 17 Grand Prix rac-es are scheduled with the fi rst being held in Melbourne on 29 March. Even after Honda pulled out, the fi eld re-mains deep with Ferrari, McLaren-Mercedes and BMW Sauber as the front runners. The new season prom-ises to be interesting in terms of sports: Various rule changes ad-dressed in this article are cause for discussion. The BMW Sauber F1 Team, which achieved its ambitious goals last season with 11 podium place-ments (including a double win), is striving for the very top: Competing in the 2009 World Championships is on the agenda!

A new option: KERSStarting with this season, teams are permitted to in-stall a kinetic energy recovering system (KERS) in their race cars. This system stores energy during braking and makes it available at the push of a button – for example when passing – which generates approxi-mately 80 additional horsepower over the short term. The disadvantages of the 30 kg weight of this unit and the change in the centre of gravity are still uncertain. From the point of view of a “normal user”, valuable know-how is being developed for the benefi t of hy-brid technology and ultimately the environmental compatibility of motor vehicles for everyday use. While the teams haven’t fully developed the technol-ogy yet, the BMW Sauber F1 Team has advanced rela-tively far. Whether the KERS will actually be deployed as an optional element remains to be seen. Its deploy-ment will depend on racetrack characteristics and strategy.

AerodynamicsThe changes (see small image, top right) are apparent in comparison to the preceding model: The F1.09 ap-pears much more compact. Due to new rules, the downforce of the vehicles was drastically reduced. Ad-ditional winglets, chimneys, gill vents and barge-boards are a thing of the past. The front and rear wings were modifi ed in order to increase overtaking. Drivers are now allowed to make two front wing ad-justments per lap, altering the pitch of the front wing angle over a six-degree range.

EnginesIn order to further improve engine durability, the rev limits are cut from 19,000 to 18,000 rpm. Drivers will be limited to eight engines per season. Otherwise, any engine change will incur a 10-place grid penalty. The motors now have to be used during the Friday prac-tice sessions already. But the fi nal word has not yet

been spoken in terms of rules for the 2009 season. Several changes have already been dropped or amended.

Tyres and test drivesRacing purists can breathe a sigh of relief: Effective in 2009, Formula 1 returns to slicks. In theory, this result in approximately 10% more grip. However, this is partly offset by the cut in aerodynamics. Testing is not allowed during the season. This will mean more ex-citement for spectators: Since development must be concluded before the fi rst race, more is left to chance. With the F1.09, the BMW Sauber F1 Team intends to compete for the World Championship title!

New: Only uniform slicks are now permitted

KERS: Warning notices on the chassis of the F1.09 F1.09, left: More compact than its predecessor.

For more about the BMW Sauber Formula 1 Team, visit www.bmw-sauber-f1.com.

With the F1.09, the BMW Sauber F1 Team intends to compete for the World Championship title!

New: Only uniform slicks are now permitted

KERS: Warning notices on the chassis of the F1.09 F1.09, left: More compact than its predecessor.

… or from a sheet (customised by BMW Sauber)
