Being mindful.

I’m a Netflix subscriber and I recently watched the entire Ken Burns series entitled, The West. As usual, it was a masterpiece in clarity, historical content and honesty in revealing all of

our history, the good and the bad alike. This particular series had more than its share of bad moments. It wasn’t pretty the way we treated the indigenous populations of American Indians, Hispanics, and later the workers which we brought in to build our infrastructure.

Through all of that though, what really struck me was that no matter what group of people Ken was describing, they all shared one particular thing in common. Once they got here, once they saw this place, they never wanted to leave. They would stake their very lives on it and often paid that price. It was the mountains, of course. They are the crown jewels of the West and when it comes to mountain ranges, Colorado has more than its fair share. There are no less than seventeen primary mountain ranges just within our state. People may have come to find gold or silver but they stayed for other reasons.

Watching the series made me realize that I had found the same connection in my own time. I moved here in 1969. I would have told anyone back then I would never love a place. A wife, a dog, maybe a cat, but never a place. I soon realized that I was wrong about that and motorcycles played a big role in that.

I bought my first bike in 1970 and a whole new world opened up for me. Hauling dirt bikes in my pickup, we rode all over the back country between Denver and Moab. My riding buddies and I rode every weekend until the snow stopped us. Sometimes, not even then. Our dirt bikes even got used to scout our fall hunting areas. Those rides frequently stumbled upon back country history. Old mining towns, abandoned railroad beds, water canals, famous hot springs, high mountain passes. It was all there and I was hooked. Mr. Mulvihill (my high school history teacher) would not have believed how fascinated I had become in history!

In 1985, my world expanded even more when I bought my first street bike. Maybe it’s just me but I am never bored when I’m riding in the mountains. Traffic notwithstanding, I love riding along I-70, just for the scenery. If a road is twisty and I’ve been there a dozen times before, I still love it. Would I have even owned a bike if I lived in some flatland? I don’t know. The thing is, this is it. It’s all here. Cool dry air, lots of twisty roads, very few bugs, lots of interesting places to stop and beautiful scenery everywhere. How amazingly lucky can we be to have stumbled into living here. The Ken Burns series reminded me of all this and I thought I might remind you too.

Ride safe,

Jeff

June 12 – 14, 2015Wilderness On Wheels Work Crew and Campout

Volunteer Sign-up is now open!!!

Replacing our traditional Beemers and Bears annual campout, this year we decided to donate a Saturday’s worth of volunteer labor for the opportunity to camp in the beautiful mountain forest facilities of Wilderness On Wheels (WOW). The Club has committed to forming a work crew of 15 to 20 members to perform light duty routine maintenance of their facilities. You are welcome to come and just camp but if you want to be part of the work crew we are asking that you sign up, preferably by May 10th at: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F094BACA92BAA8-wildernessPLEASE NOTE: You are not required to register on the website in order to sign-up as a volunteer. WOW is less than an hour from town so arrival and departure options are quite flexible. Campers can come and go any time starting Friday evening through Sunday morning. Work crew duties will be between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm Saturday. Evenings are all ours around the group campfire area. Additional Club riders from the New Member/Rhubarb Romp ride will be stopping by on Saturday afternoon to just say “Hi” or to camp for that night, at their option. For more details about WOW or the ride, check pages 24-26 in your Ride Book or the following links: http://www.myprimetimenews.com/wilderness-on-wheels-foundation-grant-colo/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=phLKGYGavQs

We hope to make this an annual event so please show some Club pride and join us for this inaugural weekend.

Top of the Rockies – July 16-19, 2015.

This is our biggest and certainly best rally event that is becoming world renown. In Paonia last year, we had guests from Central and South America, Europe, China as well as a very good representation from throughout the U.S. Our need for volunteers is as follows:

- Guest Check-in and direction- Ride leads for designated rides- Logistics in setting up and tearing down- Club Store sales table- Security detail- Field events- Door prize distribution

Won’t you please sign up to volunteer for this awesome event. Our reputation for great riding in Colorado is only augmented by the fact that we’re such great hosts for all the guests that have come from far and wide.

The detailed description of the Paonia event is here: http://bmwmcc.org/tor_rally.php

Signing up for the Top of the Rockies to volunteer is easy. Please go to the following link and sign up for one of the events with a date, time, your email and phone contact information such that we can count on you, to help The BMWMCC be the best BMW Motorcycle Club that you can know.
