But most important of all, the BMW 1500 gives you that reassuring feeling of maximum security: self-centering steering-, single­wheel suspension front and rear with coil springs, efficient shock absorbers and additional rubber-air cushioning, and powerful brakes (disc brakes in front and sliding shoe drum brakes in the rear}. BMW 1500 DIE NEUE KLASSE

Der BMW 1500 ist der richtige Wag en fur verwohnte Anspruche. Er bietet in jeder H insicht Besonderes. Seit seinem Erscheinen hat er sich unter allen Bedingungen ausgezeichnet bewahrt, in kurzer Zeit hat er sich zahlreiche Freunde erworben. Hier fuhlt man sich wohl. Freundlich und hell der gesamte lnnenraum. Frei die Sicht von alien Platzen und nach alien Seiten. Das ausgesuchte Material, das harmonisch abgestimmte lnterieur geben eine behagliche Atmosphare. Die breiten, wuchtigen Polstersitze sind so geformt, daB sie den Rucken gut abstutzen, dem Kerper festen Halt geben und ein ermudungs­freies Fahren auch uber weite Strecken ermoglichen. Der groBe Kofferraum ist aufgeraumt und ubersichtlich, ohne Nischen und Winkel. Bemerkenswert-die Kofferklappe mit Liftsystem. Spielend leichte Einhand-Bedienung. Durch die niedrige Ladekante ist er ohne Muhe bequem zu beladen. Unter der Bodenplatte des Kofferraums liegt »das funfte Rad am Wagen«. Dort start es nicht, macht nichts schmutzig und ist doch schnell zur Hand.

The carefully selected materials, the harmoniously matched interior provide a comfortable atmosphere. The wide and solid upholstered seats are shaped so that they support the back, firmly hold the body, and permit fatigue-free driving even on long journeys. The quick-acting fresh-air heater provides comfortable warmth. It mixes cool fresh air and hot air according to choice and uniformly distributes it inside the car. A view from above on to and into the BMW 1500. You can see for yourself: There is plenty of space and comfort for every­body-and everybody has his own wide door. What you cannot see (but it is reassuring to know): you sit in allsteel chassis-in a car body which offers you maximum safety. The distortion-resistant floor unit is welded to the body unit. Rigid stability in all directions is provided by the high­webbed longitudinal members and the integrally arranged struts.

The power reserves of the engine provide additional safety during overtaking. Should you find yourself in difficult situations, change down, accelerate ... and away you go. And if an emergency arises- the firmly gripping disc brakes permit shortest braking distances.

The highly flexible 4-cylinder 4-stroke in-line engine with inclined valves guarantee high performance and safety in operation. It is mounted at an angle of 30°. Constant oil circulation gives excellent lubrication. The combustion space is designed as a turbulence pan so that the air-gas mixture is subjected to controlled turbulence. Complete ignition gives optimum fuel utilisation, which means economic running and high performance. The crankshaft has five 4-layer journal bearings which ensures smooth running over the entire range of revolutions.

Custom-built seats. Superbly finish­ed. Provide firm support for sides and shoulders and back. By turning a knob you can place the rear of the seat in four different positions and select the proper setting to suit yourself.

Broad doors opening wide- provid­ing easy access. Fully retractable winding windows. Burglar-proof swivelling quarter-lights with rotary knob and automatic locking device. Safety door handles under the arm rests. No inadvertent opening.

A fast car needs good brakes. The BMW 1800 has a discdrum brake system, which offers almost double the amount of safety required by law. The standard fitted servo-assistance uni t per­mits sensitive breaking, and reduces the pedal pressure required.

The B!v1W 1800 is fast. Acceleration from 0 to 60 mph takes 12.2 seconds. The maximum speed is 100 mph. Even at constant high speed the engine has a large reserve of power. Cruising at 75 mph, fer example, takes only half of the power available!

The floor mounted gear lever permits rapid gear changes and is positive to the touch. Ideal ratios in the 4 - speed gearbox, and an exceptional!y flexible engine, means that there is always sufficient power in hand to meet any situation: starting off and moving rapidly into the traffic stream in first gear i second gear for steep mountain passes; effortless overtaking in third gear i and maximum speed on clear stretches in top gear.

A good driver changes gear frequently in heavy traffic, so that the ma~imum engine torque is available at all times. In modern city traffic 5 gear changes a minute are made. Every 12 seconds the driver has to take his foot off the acce­lerator, declutch, change gear, let in the clutch and accelerate - and usually all this has to be done at a

time when the traffic situation requires the driver's undivided attention. For this reason the ZF auto·

matic transmission has been specially developed for BMW cars: a hydrodynamic torque converter with an attached three-speed trans­mission unit. The gears are automatically engaged when the most sui table torque range is reached, depending on the road speed and the position of the accelerator pedal. For special conditions (steep winding roads, uphill and downhill, crawling along in queues, and emergency braking) manual control is possible in two additional controlled lever positions. The acceleration is equal at least to a manually operated four-speed gearbox! The sporting motoring qualities are not affected: the ZF only removes the hard work -the handling is left to you.

Start of the Grand Prix for tou­ring cars. The cars with the fastest practice times are on the front of the grid. In the first row is the silver grey BMW1800TlofHubert Hahne. The racing numbers on the sides make it easy to forget that a short while before, this car was driven as a normal saloon over ordinary roads. A BMW1800 TI is not brought to the start on a special trans­porter, it arrives at the track under its own power - even if this involves a journey

of hundreds of miles. In the 24 hour race at Francorcham ps for example, where in 1964 it won in its class by over 261 miles, it was overall winner in 1965. At the Niirburgring, in the touring car races on the 31st July this year it took three first places, the fastest lap, and set up a new course record for touring cars of all classes. During the same weekend, three BMW 1800 Tl's took first, second and fourth places on the Axamer Liezum Mountain.
