I can’t believe it is half way through the term! There has been a fabulous response to families coming in for the 10 minutes Mini Chat Meetings or having a telephone chat next week and the staff are looking for- ward to catching up to give a brief overview of how students have started their learning year! Please remember we are still having our more formal parent /stu- dent/teacher interviews at the start of Term 3, the Mini Chats do not replace these, but give parents some extra information on student’s first 6 weeks of learning at school. Reading has always been an important skill, and one of Blyth Primary School’s improvement priorities. You can develop a rich literacy environment at home by reading with your child. For young children being read to, or watching you read helps them to understand how language works, explain how to hold the book, that we read the text from left to right and that sentences are made up of words and punctuation. For older chil- dren you might point out the headings or sub headings, captions or diagrams and how meaning can be made from these aspects also. Hello Everyone,

Well as you will see from our Newsletter this week our students have certainly been very busy! I can’t believe it is half way through the term!

There has been a fabulous response to families coming in for the 10 minutes Mini Chat Meetings or having a telephone chat next week and the staff are looking for-ward to catching up to give a brief overview of how students have started their learning year! Please remember we are still having our more formal parent /stu-dent/teacher interviews at the start of Term 3, the Mini Chats do not replace these, but give parents some extra information on student’s first 6 weeks of learning at school. Your allocated time for next week is attached with this newsletter.

It is hoped that towards the end of term 2 this year there will be parent infor-mation sessions on Reading at home with your child. For older chil-dren you might point out the headings or sub headings, captions or diagrams and how meaning can be made from these aspects also. Reading aloud is important and can build children’s knowledge of various subjects and develop their interest in different topics. If you read a familiar story your child could join in and with a little bit of drama the story could become Performance Art!! Most of all reading with a parent/grandparent or older sibling can be seen as a special time that is valuable to a child. More information will come home early next term about an evening full of fun for families to enjoy reading together.

The Autumn weather has been wonderful this week for outdoor leaning and it has been fabulous to see our students enjoy an extra session of Nature Play– This was an idea from our Student Leadership Team and wholeheartedly supported by our staff.

On Wednesday our students were able to enjoy another aspect of learning through STEM activities. It was interesting to see the creative expertise of our students designing and making Bird Feeders, Chairs that had to hold a given weight, Bridges, and a motor that would move a certain distance! This week we have also had some students represent Blyth primary in SAPSASA Sport tennis and cricket. Congratulations to Billy, Harry and Jack for trying their best and playing with their teams with an excellent spirit. Diary Dates

We have been very busy learning many new things.

The reception children are acclimatising to the long

school day and are doing some great learning with

their new concepts.

The year one and two children are missing their year

three buddies but are finding their feet and they

continue to be excited by learning and mentoring

our reception students.

Reception, year

one and year two

happenings

In Design and Technology we

designed and made a new chook

house for Rosie - from the book

‘Rosie’s walk. We read the book for

Maths, practised our positional

language such as left, right, above,

below, around, and looked at

sequencing in the story. Come and

see our great designs at assembly.

Isla and

Elsie were

showcas-

ing their

artistic

talents on

the ITV.

Looking forward to catching up with everyone next week for ‘Parent Chat’s !

It will be a great opportunity to touch base!

Mrs Pyrke’s Year 3/4 Class Term 1, Week 6

In Design & Technology, we have been looking at the properties of various items and investigating the suitability of certain materials for specific

purposes. We have made catapults out of pop sticks (using milk bottle lids only as test ammo!!) to determine how to best angle the pop sticks to produce

a longer shot.

In science so far this year we have looked at different theories through time, such as the earth being flat, and how the Sun, Moon and Earth might all orbit each other. In groups, students decided what theory they believe

and then made orrery’s (3D models that have moving parts) to demonstrate their theories.

POWERFUL LEARNER

CHECK IN BY MRS JAMIESON

Hi school community members,

And just like that we find ourselves in

week 6!

As you may have heard, the children

enjoyed a STEM activity afternoon this

week, as a THANK YOU from the staff for all

of their amazing effort and growth they

have displayed.

Our Upper Primary Class have continued to

practise being a Powerful Learner by

reflecting on and resetting our goals,

setting Reading & writing goals and

noticing efforts of kindness by filling

others’ buckets.

We have been working hard on Persuasive

writing, unpacking the elements of

sizzling starts, strong and relevant

arguments and ending with impact. This is

in preparation for our Brightpath writing

assessment next week and also NAPLAN

later in the year.

Powerful Learners are curious and creative

in their thinking when solving problems

and I have really challenged them with

new Mental Computation Strategies. They

have shown great resilience in finding

new and different ways to compute sums,

resulting in less guessing and errors.

A shout out to families that have also

adjusted to our Bridging Books and

establishing fantastic routines to continue

and polish student learning at home. I am

noticing improvements in their fluency in

the classroom as a result of our Reading

Groups, but also the additional practise at

home. Great job Team!

I look forward to touching base with

everyone next week, either in person or

over the phone as we engage in our Mini

Chats. Feel free to send me an email if you

have anything specific you would like to

briefly discuss.

Have a fabulous long weekend - our

Powerful Learners have certainly earnt a

little R’n’R.

Take care.

When the STARS are working with Emily, the rest of us are working on our typing skills. We use Typing Club to teach us about how to type correctly and with what fingers. It also teaches us about good posture when typing.

Did you know: - sitting badly when typing can leave you with headaches, sore muscles and back pain.?

- you should always type with an L shape in your arms, not leaning on the desk or the keyboard?

- if you can’t touch the ground you could use a foot rest? By Tilly & Bryce

They don’t teach Maths like they used

too! And you are right! We have been learning new Mental

Computation strategies. This

lightens our cognitive load to help us deal with challenges that have more steps. It

also gives us language to explain our

thinking in maths lessons.

Henry - while it is confusing to learn

new ways, it means I make less mistakes by

guessing.

Nathan - it is easy to understand and makes it

quicker to work out correctly.

Will - I am feeling more confident because I

have different ways to work.

WHAT AN INCREDIBLE GROUP OF

LEADERS WE HAVE! After spending a day together unpacking our roles &

responsibilities, but more so what it MEANS to be Leader, we

have an improved understanding of how important our roles

are. “It means so much more than what I thought” was often

heard throughout the day.

The final product of our day is below, showing our working

document which explains our vision for Blyth Primary School,

our Leadership elements and our Management roles.

LEADERSHIP TEAM

Stretchy Lycra

to build our

hand muscles.

SPORTS REPORT

The Sports Captains embarked

on one of their official roles this

week, welcoming and thanking

our Lawn Bowls coach.

Speaking publicly in their roles

has been a goal, so they felt

pretty proud to be able to put it

in action.

A special mention about

Nathan, who picked up Lawn

Bowls amazingly well, showing

his natural athletic abilities.

Linden was very impressed!

SAPSASAA Tuesday week 6 saw Billy, Harry

and Jack head off to Clare to

participate in the Summer Hub

Tennis & Cricket days.

Billy had a fantastic day after

his first season of playing tennis,

winning 5 out of 5 of his games.

Harry also had a successful day

winning 3 out of 5 games, but

also made some new friends.

Jack played two matches,

unfortunately his team didn’t

win either. Nonetheless, he

took a wicket and enjoyed the

day of playing cricket.

We wish the boys good luck for

selections.

Bowls fun! On Monday we started our first of 4 sessions of bowls

with Linden Beames. A Sporting Schools grant is funding the

Rookie Rollers program. The kids showed great manners and

participation. Look out Bowls Australia; we are showing some

fabulous skills.

Konnichiwa Minasan, Hello everyone!

We are underway with our Open Access lessons online and the children are enjoying engaging with their Japanese teachers and stretching their brains to embed some of the language they are learning. The 5-7 class have been learning numbers above twenty and the patterns for these. They also have practised writing kanji (Japanese characters) for the numer-als 1-10. The R-2 & 3/4 class have been practicing introducing themselves in Japanese and this week learnt how to say how old they are- I wonder who will remember if you ask? They are becoming very competent in under-standing the numbers 1-10. Outside the Japanese classroom is our Sakura (cherry blossom) word wall, where the children can add blossoms for when they learn a word and feel like they have it stuck in their memory, come in and check it out!

Mata kondou, See you next time! Mrs Wright

Pastoral Care Corner T1, Week 6

Greetings everyone, at lunchtimes we have been cre-ating personalized puzzles. The children get to show off their artistic talents with their designs. We cer-tainly have some budding artists at school.

We also had a look at Friendship. Students worked to-gether to form a mural representing in picture form what friendship meant to them. This can be found on the black-board at the side of the school.

STAR Team would like to invite you to come and join us for Break-fast on Thursday 18th of March to celebrate Harmony Day. This is a great opportunity for everyone to gather as a community and embrace our diversity.

The year 6s have been busy baking breakfast muffins for STAR Breakfast this week. Please find this terms menu attached below.

If you are requiring pastoral care, I can be contacted through the front office or alternatively on my email [email protected]. I will ensure to make a suitable time with you to catch up.
