    1 Introduction1.1 TheBlueMAXmoduleTheBlueMAXmodulecapturesserialdatafromanAvidyneenginemonitoringsystemandstreamsitviaBluetoothLowEnergytoportabledevices.Thisenablessupplementaryenginedatatobedisplayedandloggedonaportabledevice.

    TheBlueMAXinstallationisnotintendedtoreplaceprimaryengineinstruments.

    Optionally,themodulemayalsobeconnectedtotheserialGPSdatatransmittedbythe#1GPSnavigatortotheMFD,providingnavigationdatatotheportabledeviceviaBluetoothtoenablecalculationssuchasfuelatdestination.

    1.2 ApplicabilityTheBlueMAXmoduleisintendedforinstallationintoaircraftalreadyfittedwithanAvidyneenginemonitoringsystem,utilizingeitheraDataAcquisitionUnit(DAU)oraSerialInterfaceUnit(SIU.)ThemajorityofsuchinstallationsareinCirrusSR22andSR20aircraft,andtheseinstructionsrelatespecificallytothosemodels.

    2 DefinitionsThefollowingabbreviationsandacronymsareusedinthisdocument:

    BLE BluetoothLowEnergy–theradioprotocolusedbytheBlueMAXmodule,operatingat2.4GHz.

    DAU DataAcquisitionUnit–oneofthetwointerfacemodulesusedbyAvidynetocollectanalogenginedataandconverttoRS-232serialdata.

    SIU TheotherAvidyneinterfacemodule,usedonolderaircraft.

    DTU DataTransferUnit–amoduleinstalledinG3aircraftwhichcollectsaircraftdataandtransmitsittoaloggingmodule.

    EMAX Avidyne’sproductnamefortheenginemonitoringsystem.

    MFD MultiFunctionDisplay–apanel-mounteddisplayusedtodisplaynon-flight-criticaldata,includingsupplementaryenginedata.

    5 PowerrequirementsTheBlueMAXmoduledrawsamaximumofonly10mAandmaybesuppliedfromanexistingbreaker.ItisrecommendedthatitbesuppliedfromtheconveniencepowerbreakerCB638(5Aor3Adependingonaircraftconfiguration)onthenon-essentialbus.AllpowerwiringtotheBlueMAXadaptershouldbe22AWG,whichisratedto5AperAC43.13-1B,orheavier.

    6 Preparationforinstallation6.1 AircraftidentificationCirrusaircraftfittedwithPerspectiveavionicsarenoteligibleforBlueMAXinstallation.

    CirrusaircraftfittedwithAvidyneEMAXenginemonitoringfallintotwogeneralcategories–thosefittedwithanSIUorthosefittedwithaDAU.SIUsarefittedonlytoearlyserialnumbersandcanbeidentifiedbythepresenceofanalogengineinstrumentsontherighthandsideoftheinstrumentpanel.NotethatthattheSIUwasanoption,andmaynotbefittedtoallapplicableaircraft.LaterAvidyne-equippedaircraftdonothavetheanaloginstrumentsonthepanel(thereisagloveboxinthelocationwheretheengineinstrumentswere)andalltheseaircraftarefittedwithaDAU.TheDAUprovidestwoRS-232outputs,onefeedstheMFDandisusedforconnectiontotheBlueMAXmodule,andtheotherfeedsthePFDwhichdisplaystheprimaryengineinstrumentation.

    6.2 ConnectoridentificationConnectorsinstalledbyCirrusaregenerallywelllabeled,butnotethatthereisapeculiaritywiththenomenclatureused–connectorswithmalepins(whichwouldnormallybecalled“plugs”)arecalledjacksandlabeledasJnnnandconnectorswith

    femalepins(whichwouldnormallybecalled“sockets”or“jacks”)arecalledplugsandlabeledasPnnn.

    IfconnectionistobemadetoGPSdatafromthe#1GPSonwireANGP543-22,thisislocatedinJ518(mostaircraft)orJ517(serialnumbers22-0434andearlier,and20-1336andearlier.)RefertotheCirruswiringmanualforfurtherinformation.

    J518carriesRS-232GPS#1(wireANGP543-22)dataonpin9.J518isaD-Subplug(i.e.malepins)whichconnectstoP518,whichismountedonthetoprightoftheradiorack,belowtheMFDopening.J518issecuredbyaslide-locksoisrelativelyeasytoremove,buttheremaybeothercablesinthewaythatwillhavetobedisconnectedtoaccessit.

    P1047andJ1047arepresentinG3aircraftonly,andarelocatedforwardoftheMFD.Theyusemetalbackshellswithslide-lockcoupling.

    P1426andJ1426arelocatedinthesamearea,andarefoundinallDAUaircraft.Theyhaveplasticbackshellsandjackscrewcoupling.SeeFigure1Connectorlocations.Bothpairsofconnectorsareunpluggedfromeachotherinthisimage.Theremaybevariationsinthehardwareindifferentaircraft,butallshouldbelabeled–verifyidentificationbycheckingthelabels.

    6.4 VerifyprimaryenginedataonPFDforDAUaircraftDAUequippedaircraftdisplayprimaryenginedataonthePFD,butthisrequiresthatthesoftwareversioninstalledonthePFDsupportsthisdisplay.Toverifythis,poweruptheaircraftandinspectthelowerrightareaofthePFD.ThereshouldbeadatablockwithprimaryenginedataasshowninFigure3:PrimaryenginedataonPFD.Ifthisdataisabsent,thePFDsoftwaremustbeupgradedbeforeinstallingBlueMAX.

    11 Postinstallchecks• Poweruptheaircraftandverifythattheanaloginstruments(iffitted)orthePFD

    displayprimaryenginedata.• VerifythattheMFD(iffitted)displayssupplementaryenginedata.• UsingaBLEscannerverifythattheBlueMAXmoduleisadvertising(thedefault

    devicenameisEMAX.)Thisconfirmsthatthemoduleispoweredup.Pullthebreakersupplyingthemoduleandconfirmthatitstopsadvertising.

    12 WeightandbalanceTheinstalledweightoftheBlueMAXadapterandharnessisapproximately80g(lessthan3ounces)andresultsinachangeintheCGpositionofapproximately0.008%MAC.ThisisconsideredanegligiblechangeperAC43.13-1Bandnoweightandbalanceupdateisrequired.

    13 FlightManualSupplementCompletetherequiredinformationontheprovidedFlightManualSupplementandinsertitintotheaircraftFlightManualorPOH.

    14 LogbookentryMakeasuitablelogbookentrydocumentingtheinstallation.

    15 InstructionsforcontinuedairworthinessNoroutinemaintenanceorinspectionoftheBlueMAXmoduleisrequired.Correctdisplayofprimaryandsupplementaryenginedatashouldbemonitoredduringnormaloperation.

    16 RemovaloftheBlueMAXinstallationFortemporaryremoval,disconnectthemodulefromP1426Bandremoveit.Forpermanentremoval,removetheadapterharness,andreconnectP719/J719,P1407/J1407orP1426/P1426asappropriate,inaccordancewiththeCirrusWiringManual.
