Unley Open Carnival

Saturday 31st October Warm Up 12.15pm

By now all members should have received a letter requesting donations for the Lucky Envelope stall which is to be held at the carnival. As a small swimming community, we trust that all members will assist with this request. As the Unley Pool is not reopening until Saturday October 10th, our time at the pool before the Carnival will be shortened, so all correspondence relating to the event will need to go our via email.

A reminder that it is expected that all swimmers will compete on the day and that all families will make themselves available to assist. Shortly, there will be an email out regarding sponsorship for the event so keep a look out.

Saturday 31st October Put this important date in your diary

PRESIDENTS REPORT Welcome to the new edition of the Unley Amateur Swimming Club newsletter. It has been impossible for us to prepare a newsletter for the last couple of years, but I am pleased that Debbie Rahill has offered her services to try to ensure that we get more regular issues going forward. If there is anything that you would like to see, in future editions, please pass on your suggestions to Debbie.

Winter is a funny time for the sport of swimming in general, but particularly for Unley. We are fortunate to have the best home swimming facility in the state, and we all prefer our home environment. This also means that it is often

more difficult to catch up with other parents and swimmers. My only current swimmer, Melanie, is busy with her year 12 studies at the moment, and that has meant far fewer trips to the pool than would be normal. However, the return to Unley is not far away. I received advice, this week that routine maintenance at the Unley Pool was going to take longer than planned. Consequently, the pool will now be opening on Saturday, October 10th. We will continue to train at Westminster until October 9th. Our first training session back at the pool will be at 6.00am on that Saturday, and, as usual, we will be providing pancakes for the swimmers after the session. Saturday mornings are generally a very social session, and it is the one session of the week to which all swimmers are invited.

As we get into the summer season, there will be several dates that are important. Firstly, and most importantly, the Unley Club Carnival will be held on October 31st .This is the club’s biggest fundraising event for the year, and the more people who are involved, the more successful the day will be. All swimmers are expected to compete at this meet.

Secondly, a sub-committee has been set up to look at “key” swimming events, throughout the season, to which Unley will try to send a solid team. We will provide more information, once the Swimming SA calendar is confirmed, but we hope to give the junior swimmers, in particular, more of an opportunity to compete as part of a team, this season.

The first four events we are targeting this season will be:

The Junior Pentathlon on 18 October

The Unley Carnival on 31 October

The State Open Water on 14 November

The Le Fevre carnival on 29 November We are also fortunate to have a number of new faces on the committee, who will be helping to come up with some new ideas. Please feel free to contact any of us if you have any questions. Looking forward to a successful finish to the winter season and a great start to summer. Andrew Slimming President

COACH’S REPORT The number of consistently training swimmers has grown over the winter months. These new members are predominantly surf swimmers, but they are secondly pool swimmers willing to compete. What this means to our club is older swimmers that work hard in training, which helps change the attitude for the entire group, and secondly give us more balance. The club these swimmers have moved from now are left with the oldest swimmer being 15-16 years old. WINTER COMPETITIONS I decided at the start of winter that Unley would compete at the Division 1 & 2 meets only, and not contest the Under 12 meets. The reasons for this are as follows:

The Division 2 meets offer all events – unlike the Under 12 meet which is limited to 25m and 50m races predominantly.

Having all our Junior and Development swimmers competing at one meet, means that we are there in force – the Under 12 meet would mean our numbers would be divided between both meets.

As a result of this decision, our numbers of swimmers qualifying for States have grown. Not only did swimmers like Adheesha DeSilva, Annabelle Lampard, Madeline Larkin, Claire Wilkinson, Rasa Bakutis, Millie Lewis, Abbey Jones and T-Jay Rump make big improvements during the winter season, they continued that rate of progression at the Championships, recording personal best times. Adheesha was clearly a standout during the Titles, finishing 4th in no less than 6 events. Changing the type of session Adheesha is attending and increasing the number of attendances per week should see Adheesha on the podium several times during the summer Long Course Championships in January.

Adding the above mentioned swimmers to our experienced swimmers like Max Glonek, Pat Cobiac, Ethan Rump and Larissa Murawsky meant we had a good number at each session.

4 x 50m Relays were contested at the final session and Unley had teams entered in the majority of age groups. Unfortunately, one member failed to show up meaning that I had to make the difficult decision to rearrange teams.

The decision I made was in the best interest of the club, giving Unley the best opportunity to gain points or medals, but the drawback was that one U11 Team and an U17 team had to miss one of their relays. I stand by my decision as the best for the club as there is no “I” in Team The final competition for winter is the 13-18 year old State Championships. Unley will be well represented by the following swimmers – Max Glonek, Pat Cobiac, Ethan Rump, Damian Carlino, Larissa Murawsky, Ehlana Hoff, Claire Wilkinson and Rasa Bakutis. We will see multiple medal winners within this group and big PB’s. For all but the above mentioned swimmers, the focus in training now is fitness and stroke development. From the numbers training consistently at the moment, I feel that both are on track. Craig Jones Coach
