Popular SCORE Online Workshops When Social Goes Local Listen anytime! Using Social Media to Grow Your Business with SCORE and HP Listen anytime! Savvy Social Media with Jeanne Rossomme Listen anytime!

Robbin Block has been evangelizing the benefits of marketing strategy for over 25 years. Part geek, part creative, she’s brought her in-depth knowledge of the Web and its strategic application to business to companies of all sizes and to thousands of readers via her book, Social Persuasion: Making Sense of Social Media for Small Business. This month, Robbin discusses some of social media’s many implications on the crafting and execution of winning small business marketing plans.

What’s the biggest misperception about social media’s role in marketing, and what should entrepreneurs really be doing as they map out a new small business?

Social media can’t solve all your marketing problems. For a business, it needs to be thought of like any other communication tool. You need to understand the fundamentals of marketing — who’s your target audience, where do they get their information, what do they care about, etc.— to find the right media mix that makes sense for you.

What is the most underutilized non-social media marketing method today?

By far, it’s public relations. Many people are afraid of it, or don’t know what it is. Instead they’ll spend money on poorly placed ads that will almost always fail.

What are two or three go-to resources for finding data about your market?

The U.S. Census. A lot of valuable information from the latest census is now being released. Industry associations. Industry trade publications and consumer magazines. Their media kits have great

information about their readers’ demographics and interests.

And many more resources are available at my website, www.blockbeta.com.

Coupons are gaining popularity as a means for luring potential customers. If this option appears right for a small business, what is needed to help turn coupon users into regular customers?

Understand what attracted them in the first place. People who just want a deal are tough to convert. But many customers use coupons to “sample the goods.” To get them to come back and pay full price, use strategic messaging at each touchpoint to help push them down the purchase path. This messaging can be done verbally, through printed materials, online, and even reinforced with “gifts”.

Can you provide an example of how this works?

A Pilates studio I work with has used social coupons to bring in new customers, offering a 7-week program at a discounted rate. Each week, the studio reinforces the benefits of membership and the results the customer would get if they continue taking their classes. Communications include a comprehensive orientation, an introductory gift of a branded water bottle, follow-on emails, etc. It’s a planned program designed to positively reinforce the customer experience. This in combination with excellent service may be enough to convince the customer to continue at full price.

Why should entrepreneurs work with a SCORE small business mentor to develop and monitor their marketing plans?

Marketing needs to be flexible, because the environment within which a business operates is always changing. And the business itself is evolving as new opportunities or threats come to light. A SCORE mentor can help filter the information and focus the entrepreneur on what’s important.

I recently had the opportunity to sit in on Muscatine Community College’s professor, Jim Elias’ Entrepreneurship class making final presentations for their proposed business start-ups. I arrived

early and the students were noticeably nervous and concerned about doing the presentation correctly. I asked one learner if they knew their material.

Well, “what do you mean?” was the response. “Have you spent time knowing what you had put together?” I said.

YPN’s Third Thursday & Member SpotlightSeptember’s Third Thursday will be held on the second Thursday, September 12, from 5 to 7 p.m. They will be

holding a group event with Central State Bank as they host GMCCI’s Business After Hours.

Come out for food, entertainment, yummy beverages, fantastic prizes, fun games and a chance to socialize with many community members. This is a tailgate party, so be sure to wear your red for Iowa State or your black and gold for Iowa!

YPN will be partnering with the Muscatine Municipal Golf Course this year to put on another evening of filling

“Yes,” said the learner.

Then, I told them that if you had spent the time on the materials, then you should be able to discuss the proposal without the PowerPoint slides. This presenter did not seem convinced. The message here is that to reach effectiveness, one needs to make sure to invest the time in preparation.

Of course, this was an important part of their final grade. More than that, the knowledge of the materials would allow the presenter the opportunity and the freedom to share and add on additional materials that were not on the slides.

Next month, I am scheduled to speak to

the new 2013-2014 Leadership Muscatine class. I gave the presentation last year and I will take the time to review the materials from last year. This year’s presentation will not be the same. What new business knowledge and experience will I have to share with the group? That is a must to include into the materials. All this leads to the plan. How will I be able to present without using the background slides? I hope to share with you the results of my up-front planning.

Remember, final results will depend on the work one does in the planning stage. Doctor John

About Friendly Sites

Many small businesses need a professional website at low cost. Typical solutions to this problem are either unsightly, difficult to use, or require a major investment of

time from the small business owner to set up the website themselves. Friendly Sites is their answer to this dilemma. Not only are Friendly Sites easy to use for the business owner, they are easy on the pocketbook, too. Professionally designed and mobile-phone friendly, but without some of the bells and whistles of a completely custom website design, Friendly Sites give high value on the dollar for small businesses needing to get started online with a professional web presence at an affordable rate.

World’s Best Cat Litter™, the only litter made from all-natural whole-kernel corn, is produced by Kent Nutrition Group, Inc. – Pet Division, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Kent Corporation located in Muscatine, Iowa.

The product was born of the founders’ respect for animals, the local community, and the environment. Unlike other cat litters, World’s Best Cat Litter™ is safe for humans, animals, and the planet because it does not contain any synthetic chemicals, clays, or perfumes. In fact, the kiln dried wood fibers in one of its newest scented formulas are made of re-purposed tree shavings that might have otherwise gone to waste. All varieties are made from renewable resources, and consistently perform as well as others in the market. Because it lasts longer than its synthetic counterparts, it is the most cost-effective choice for cat owners.

In addition to their commitment to the environment and household safety, the makers of World’s Best Cat Litter™ are giving back to the community. Launched in 2010, the GiveLitter initiative gives free cat litter to chosen shelters. More than 230,000 pounds of World’s Best Cat Litter™ have been donated to date. Pet-lovers from across the nation can go to the World’s Best Cat Litter’s™ Facebook page at www.facebook.com/worldsbestcatlitter and the company’s website at www.worldsbestcatlitter.com/ to learn more about the charity.

Less than a year and a half after the installation of a new bagger, World’s Best Cat Litter™ has packaged more than 5 million bags of litter, which is enough to last one cat 830,000 years, or ten million cats for one month. Cat lovers across the country looking for a dust-free, eco-friendly alternative to the typical clay based and synthetic formulas are finding Iowa’s take on cat litter difficult to beat.

3rd Annual Secure Your ID DayThe Greater Muscatine Chamber of Commerce & Industry has once again partnered with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and Cintas for a free shredding event.

On Tuesday, October 1 from 3 to 6 p.m. in the parking lot of the Calvary Church, 501 W Bypass 61, Muscatine, the GMCCI, BBB and Cintas staff will be on hand to collect and shred the communities unused and unwanted documents. This event is FREE to the general public and we encourage community members to attend.

This is the 3rd year for the event and with it growing each year, it will not be the last. There is no limit on the amount of documents being dropped off we just ask that materials be removed from any binding or folders. They can contain staples and paper clips.

This is your chance, personally or professionally to clean out all desk drawers, file cabinets and old offices. With identity theft at an all-time high for consumers, this insidious crime is no longer just a consumer problem it also affects all types of companies both large and small. Everyone is respon-sible for protecting their confidential data.

Secure document shredding is vital to personal records and businesses. Simply tossing a document in the trash or recycling bin puts you or your customer at risk for identity theft. Take this opportunity, clean out your files and take advantage of this free service!

Day of Caring Event Urges Community to ‘LIVE UNITED’United Way of Muscatine is organizing its 7th Annual Day of Caring to kick off the 2014 campaign on September 25, 2013. This is a unique opportunity for volunteers to complete a meaningful service project for a local nonprofit agency or an area resident who needs a hand. Last year’s event included over 465 volunteers who worked on 48 projects for those served by local non-profits. Local businesses are sponsoring the event to cover the cost of t-shirts, food and water for volunteers.

As a result of the tremendous growth in participation the Day of Caring has seen in the past six years, United Way hosts two separate Day of Caring events. In addition to the annual fall event for adults, a second day will be held in spring 2014 specifically for students. Last spring over 300 volunteers participated in 29 projects.

Volunteer opportunities available range from helping with home projects for the elderly, cleaning up local parks, and working with non-profit agencies in the Muscatine community. Volunteers can participate for a half or full day with breakfast and lunch provided.

To become involved, look for team registrations in your place of employment or contact Nichole Sorgenfrey at 563-263-5963 or [email protected] to register.

Tai Chi Summer Park Tour Continues Through OctoberCaleen Pagel, P.T. at Muscatine Physical Therapy Services (MPTS) has been volunteering her time every Wednesday during the lunch hour to provide free Tai Chi to any interested participants.

These sessions are year-round but during the spring, summer and fall months, Pagel takes advantage of the nice weather and teaches them outside at various Muscatine scenic areas. During the winter months, the sessions are held at MPTS’ Sports Performance Center located in the Lincoln Center.

Tai Chi is an internal Chinese martial art practiced for both its defense training and its health benefits. It is also typically practiced for a variety of other personal reasons: its hard and soft martial art technique, demonstration competitions, and longevity. As a result, a multitude of training forms exist, both traditional and modern, which correspond to those aims. Some of tai chi training forms are especially known for being practiced at what most people categorize as slow movement.
