While every school year is important, not every year can be great.

Like every other enterprise, great school years happen when it all comes together – energy,

strategy, resources, hard work.

It is in this spirit that we are very proud to report that 2012/13 was a great year for Blue Ridge

School.

Academically, culturally, athletically and financially, Blue Ridge School enjoyed memorable

times in 2012/13. A strong faculty, outstanding senior class leadership, a State Championship

in football, fantastic college acceptances, renewed alumni and parent councils…12/13 had it all.

Many, many people contributed to this success, and this report celebrates each and every one.

Bottom line - your gifts of time, talent and treasure made a tremendous difference. Thank

you.

Now, let’s do it again!

You will be pleased to know that - with 2012/13 as a foundation - BRS has enjoyed a solid

2013/14 school year with 182 great boys from 22 states and 14 countries enrolled. We have

operated with a balanced budget, have made progress on both the BRS Faculty Commons

and Baron Athletic Complex, and remain fully committed to all boys, all boarding, all college

bound. Your Board of Trustees and Leadership Team are working closely together as well to

identify the challenges ahead and prepare for them.

Quite simply, it is thanks to you that we can continue to be experts in educating boys. Blue

Ridge is grateful for your continuing trust, and we hope you will again help ensure that great

things happen this year and in years to come.

Dear Blue Ridge Community,

Every few years, an institution will have a turning point – a time when significant events inspire great performances,

renewed vision and new-found clarity.

I believe 2012/13 was one of those years for Blue Ridge School.

As I look back, six accomplishments stand out in my mind:

• Our dedicated faculty truly excelled. The experience our boys enjoyed was better than ever, resulting in strong

college placement success, wonderful athletic achievement, and record retention. (And, remarkably, every member of

our faculty chose to return for the 2013/14 year – a huge vote of confidence.)

• Our senior class exemplified leadership. Together, this group of 38 young men reminded the entire community

what teamwork, positive energy, school-pride and individual dedication to a goal can create.

• Our admission team did exceptional work. Together, the team set a standard for both “mission appropriate fit” and

financial stewardship, bringing 182 boys to campus for the 2013/14 year, with performance metrics that are the envy of

our peers.

• Thanks to careful budget planning and strong Trustee leadership, we were able to hold tuition without an increase.

This is a relative rarity in today’s marketplace, and signals our commitment to prudent management and affordability.

• Our administrative architecture was completed. With Vinton Bruton and Franklin Daniels’ promotions to Assistant

and Associate Headmasters, respectively, we further cemented the good chemistry and efficient operation of our inter-

nal and external teams. It is my hope to keep this terrific team together for some years to come.

• Our School Family – alumni, parents, and friends across America and beyond – signaled their confidence in our

work and our plans. Progress on the BRS Faculty Commons and the Baron Athletic Complex, in addition to a very

strong Annual Fund year (THANK YOU!), made much of our success possible.

Together, these factors confirm that our School is well-positioned for what’s ahead. We have a mission that has never

been more poignant, we have faculty members who are truly experts in educating boys, and we have a positive energy

on campus that adds value to the entire enterprise.

As I write this, we are just returning for the third trimester of the 2013/14 year. Our students now turn their focus to

“finishing strong” – earning their way into the college of their choice, securing a leadership position on campus for

next year, or simply surviving Mr. Young’s Humanities course! Happily, some things never change.

On behalf of everyone at Blue Ridge, thank you for your continuing investments in this extraordinary place. Yester-

day, today, and tomorrow, your support makes it possible. We hope to see you on campus again soon.
