Our rooms have been booked for early check- in so that we have time to rest and freshen up. For their dedication to educating and enriching the lives of young women and men in Chicago, DePaul University’s Monsignor Kenneth J. Velo and alumnus Thomas Kleinschmidt were honored May 6 at an “Inspiration Celebration” by the board of directors and friends of Gordon Tech College Prep.

Velo, senior executive for DePaul’s Office of Catholic Collaboration and co-chair of the Big Shoulders Fund, is “a man who loves Chicago and all the people in Chicago,” said Trisha Rooney Alden, who co-chaired the event with Christopher Valenti.

In accepting the award, Velo looked back and acknowledged the years of service by the Resurrectionists and the wonderful faculty at Gordon Tech.

“As we look forward, we see a new beginning. I am humbled by all the work that goes on here … and we look forward to amazing things,” Velo said.

Kleinschmidt played professional basketball after being a standout player at Gordon Tech and later Conference Player of the Year at DePaul. He is now a teacher and head basketball coach at Gordon.

“But basketball player no longer defines Tom Kleinschmidt,” said Jean Lenti Ponsetto, DePaul’s athletic director. “Today, he is inspirational, motivating, encouraging, guiding and directing. (He is) back home at Gordon to create an educated and passionate and just world — one student at a time.”

In accepting the award, Kleinschmidt talked about the friends he made and lessons he learned as a basketball player and coach, and his new fulfilling role as a teacher. Among those who inspired him were the “great teachers, coaches and crowds.”

Among the estimated 300 Gordon Tech alumni and supporters at the Inspira-tion Celebration was Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

“I wanted to be here because of the mission of Gordon Tech and DePaul University; what you guys do to make sure our children have a better, stronger future. Your partnership is so important,” Emanuel said.

In October, DePaul announced it was teaming up with Gordon Tech to provide a strong school of choice for Chicago’s North Side, an area of the city that wanted a viable Catholic high school option. The collaboration was designed to build upon Gordon Tech’s recent enrollment growth and put the coed college preparatory institution on par with the Chicago area’s other top-tier Catholic high schools.

“This is a school of spectacular history,” noted the Rev. Dennis H. Holtschnei-der, C.M., DePaul’s president. He was called upon at the Inspiration Celebra-tion to share highlights of what has occurred during this strategic planning year between the two schools.

Among the items Holtschneider noted were:

DePaul assisted the Gordon Tech board with the selection of Jim Quaid

as the new principal who along with Kelly Jones, the board president, “make a powerful team for the school.” On May 19, Gordon Tech’s graduation will take place at the St. Vincent de Paul Church in Lincoln Park. On Aug. 12, Gordon Tech students will kick off the school year on DePaul’s Lincoln Park Campus where they will spend their first day of school. To help integrate re-search into the curriculum, all Gordon Tech students, faculty and staff now have access to the Richardson Library. The College of Computing and Digital Media is helping develop a technol-ogy program. “You may note that our computer science school provides 45 percent of Chicago’s computer science degrees.” DePaul’s Theatre School is making curriculum recommendations. “Gordon Tech has an excellent woodshop and The Theatre School is working with them to develop ideas for a set design program.” The School of Music, whose Jazz Quartet played at the event, is helping to create an education program to bring music back to the school. The College of Education is reviewing Gordon’s counseling and profes-sional development programs and will provide a set of recommendations.

“We are thrilled to be working together in so many different capacities. I’m certain we will find more,” Holtschneider said.

“The reason why for all of us this is a core belief is not only that Chicago needs to have a strong, vital high school on the North Side, which Gordon Tech represents and I think our partnership can grow ever more, but the Catholic church itself needs to be strengthened by those who have gone through Catholic education,” Holtschneider said. “It is our great honor to be part of this project that educates young people and their futures.”

The Gordon Tech board of directors, chaired by Dia Weil, who also is a DePaul trustee, provided a number of facts and statistics at the event. Cur-rently, Gordon Tech has a 99 percent graduation rate and 99 percent college acceptance rate. Its students are a diverse group, coming from more than 42 different zip codes and 15 different countries.

This year alone, Gordon Tech seniors have qualified for $1.3 million in college scholarships and have been accepted into a variety of universities including: University of Chicago, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Bradley, Loyola, Marquette, University of Iowa, Northwestern, and, of course, DePaul.

Ryan was a three-time champion in the hammer throw and is the only student-athlete in C-USA Championship history to eclipse the 60-meter mark in the hammer throw. He placed third in the hammer at the 2002 NCAA Championships and finished sixth at the NCAA meet in 2001. He just missed winning the hammer throw in all four years at DePaul as he placed second in the event at the 1999 C-USA Outdoor Championship.

Sports Reports:Softball: Kirsten Verdun did not realize she had not given up a hit with one out in the sixth inning Thursday. All the DePaul junior knew was that she had to protect a narrow lead in the Blue Demons’ 1-0 victory over Georgetown in the opener of the BIG EAST Championship tournament at USF. DePaul (32-20) advances to the 3 p.m. semifinal game on Friday against No. 1-seed Notre Dame (42-12) who beat No. 8-seed Seton Hall 6-0.

Track & Field: DePaul will take its best shot in track and field’s “last-chance weekend” hoping to qualify student-athletes for the NCAA West Preliminary Round in two weeks. The Blue Demon hurdlers, sprinters, 800-meter man Chris Miedema and high jumper Durrell McDonald will head to Atlanta and compete in the Georgia Tech Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The throwers will be in Louisville, Ky. on Friday for the Louisville Twilight meet.

Men’s Golf: DePaul senior golfer John Pavelko became just the second DePaul golfer to earn BIG EAST All-Confer-ence honors, as announced the league office on Thursday. Pavelko earned all-conference honors after finishing in a tie for seventh place at the Conference Championship on April 30.

Women’s Volleyball: With its 2013 spring schedule exhausted, DePaul volleyball spent Wednesday afternoon soaking up some sun and hosting a triples tournament to close out the annual Spring Challenge at North Avenue Beach. In a battle between “Red” and “Blue,” the “Blue” team came out on top with freshman Abbie Fleener winning the individual title.

MAY IS SCHOLARSHIP MONTH! After a rousing success in last year’s Blue Demon Scholarship Challenge, DePaul Athletic De-velopment has designated May as scholarship month for 2013. As part of the Blue Demon Scholarship Challenge, the DePaul’s athletic programs will compete for a chance for departmental awards for their scholarship accounts. Last year, because of great support from alumni, family and friends, the Inaugural Scholarship Challenge garnered a total of 151 scholarship gifts, totaling more than $38,000.

There will be three ways to win: 1) Award for most gifts to a sport’s scholarship fund(s) (gifts of $100 or more), 2) Largest amount of total gifts to a sport’s scholarship fund(s), and 3) Largest percentage of alumni who make a gift to a scholarship fund(s) (gifts of $100 or more). The program that wins each award will receive $1500 for their scholarship funds from the revenue generated by DePaul’s on-line auctions throughout 2012-13. (The Scholarship Challenge only counts Scholarship gifts that are made between May 1 and May 31.)

We need all the support this year to make Scholarship Month another success! Give a gift to your favorite DePaul sport by click-ing the corresponding scholarship from the drop down box on our website. If your sport does not have a specific scholarship you can donate to the sport itself. We thank you in advance for all your generous donations. Together we can

MANY DREAMS. ONE MISSION. - THE CAMPAIGN FOR DEPAUL UNIVERSITYThe Many Dreams, One Mission Campaign for DePaul University is an historic initiative undertaken in support of one of America’s great universities. It will ensure that DePaul continues to deliver on our founding promise: an excellent education for any talented student who seeks it.

The Campaign supports dreams. Students come to DePaul from across the country and around the world. Their dreams are many and varied, individual to each, as our students come from all stations in life. Many are the first in their family to attend college.

The realization of their dreams gives rise to new dreams and strong communities. The Campaign sup-ports DePaul’s mission, a mission which blends opportunity and excellence, inquiry and discovery, ser-vice to the individual and benefit to the larger community. It is manifested in the work that goes on here every day, in libraries, classrooms, laboratories, practice rooms and on the stage in hours of solitude and moments of connection

ATHLETICS CAPITAL CAMPAIGN SURPASSES $10 MILLION MARKAthletics provides an avenue of opportunity for students at DePaul.
