+ BLUE CHIP CLIENT – MAJOR PLANT MODIFICATION New Distributed Control System (DCS) delivers on time and under budget
FEATURED PROJECT FOR SYSTEMS ENGINEERING - GREENFIELD & BROWNFIELD SERVICES
+ PROJECT OVERVIEW
A blue-chip client undertook major modifi cations to their plant.
The modifi cations included:
< New process equipment.
< New grinding machinery.
< Instrumentation and electrical equipment to support the modifi cations.
< Two new additional substations.
< New DCS to control the new system and tie-ins to the existing DCS.
+ OUR SERVICES
I&E Systems were engaged to deliver the new DCS for the project.
Our involvement began with the initial Identifi cation Study in 2007
through to the execution phase. The scope of our services included:
< Identifi cation – To identify the opportunity and list options.
We identifi ed the options available to cater for control of the new
equipment and process modifi cations.
< Selection – To review the option and provide a recommendation,
including design basis, cost and implementation.
< Defi nition – To conduct detailed design of the recommended option.
We performed detailed design of the new DCS including planning,
standards and specifi cations in preparation for execution.
< Execution – We were responsible for the complete execution of DS
works for the project.
I&E Systems provided control system engineering related to the DCS
works, which included the existing Honeywell DCS and the new Yokogawa
CentumVP DCS. Overall, twenty-three DCS and network cabinets were
designed, constructed and tested for the hardwired I/O nearing 2000
points. The new system also has interfaces to existing systems for
production reporting and optimisation.

+ THE RESULTS
Graphics were produced based upon Abnormal Situation Management
(ASM) principles providing the operations group with a greatly reduced set
of mimics compared to traditional methods. The new system integrates
with the existing DCS such that the operations team are able to operate
the new plant and view the existing plant for areas of commonality.
Accuracy and detail in the DCS wiring design, from using the DAD System
Information Modelling software, played a signifi cant role in reducing
design errors and the subsequent changes in construction. The measure
of this success was the error-free migration of existing I/O in the Reagents
area from the existing DCS to the new DCS in a short-shutdown period.
As-building was completed quickly, as all changes had been managed in
DAD throughout the project site phase. The DAD software package also
played a central role in the delivery of error-free software by associating
software points with design documentation such as hardware designs,
functional specifi cations, P&ID’s, technical queries and change requests.
The DCS was delivered on time and under budget.
