The Blu Homes Story

Blu Homes was started as a two-year research study

at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Rhode

Island School of Design on how to use technology to

revolutionize the way we build green homes. I tested

this on my own ecologically protected property

with our first homes, which were designed online in

3-D and precision-built with steel, installed in one

inspiring day and each finished in a week. Since then

Blu has been building high-quality, green homes for

families across North America. Our goal is to make

it easier and more fun for our clients to design and

build beautiful, spacious, light-filled homes that bring

the outside in.

Blu’s Steel FramingBlu Homes’ proprietary steel framing technology was developed out of research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Rhode Island School of Design to provide buildings of incredible strength, quality and durability for high performance in extreme weather conditions, including hurricane-level wind zones and extreme snow loads, high seismic zones and challenging soil and marine moisture environments.

In addition, Blu’s steel framing technology allows for homes that are far more spacious than traditional stick-built or prefab homes. Our homes fold onto a standard truck for shipping, and then unfold to reveal living spaces up to 25’ wide and 16’ high, with beautiful glass windows that bring natural daylight inside.

Blu Building ProcessBuilt in Blu Homes’ factory by our highly skilled craftspeople, Blu homes are beautiful, healthy and green—and extremely well constructed. Factory construction in 6–8 weeks enables a much greener building process protected from the elements and free of mold-causing moisture and debris, and is much less stressful for you and your neighbors! In addition, it means rigorous research and selection of green building materials that are healthier for your family and for the earth. Moreover, computer-driven and automated factory construction techniques assure quality construction of the highest order. After rigorous quality assurance evaluations at our factory, and expert input from third-party engineers, our homes are inspected in the factory by government certified evaluators. Only then will Blu ship a home to a customer’s building site. Finally, a team of trained Blu professionals travels to each customer’s site, taking final responsibility for the quality of each Blu home.

The iconic Breezespace™ design, paired with a cantilevered second story, creates a welcoming entrance and multiple courtyards. The Glidehouse starts at two bedrooms and two bathrooms and has optional one or two-bedroom pods that can be integrated to add additional bedroom or home office space. The Glidehouse is designed to be accessible for people of all abilities and can be outfitted with fully accessible fittings and fixtures as needed.

Experience the wide open floor plans, two story living room, the signature Loftspace® and built-in storage solutions. Add colonial-style windows and shutters for a classic barn-style home, or go without shutters and opt for larger single-pane windows to provide an uninterrupted view of the outdoors.

The Lofthouse is offered in two to four bedroom floor plans, with open or separate dining areas and a multitude of interior and exterior finish options. Enhance the double-height living room with two fireplace options coupled with sleek, built-in casework. Create additional space and light with our attic package, complete with 3 skylights and 2 windows. As with all of our homes, the Lofthouse comes standard with an engineered steel frame, as well as energy-efficient and eco-friendly finishes, making it as strong and healthy as it is beautiful.

Site Costs

As you estimate the cost of your project, remember to plan for site costs in addition to the cost of the Blu Home model you select. Site costs can vary greatly depending on geographic location and site variables such as the slope of your lot, soil conditions and available utility connections. As part of BluServ Plus, your Blu team will provide a preliminary range of costs and eventually a detailed written estimate to help better inform your budget. You can rest easy that with BluServ Plus, you will receive a fixed bid at contract signing providing you full transparency—and you will not have to worry about any hidden costs or fees.

Approximate Budget

The total cost of your home will depend upon a number of site-specific factors, including state and local permitting, the extent of landscaping and other site work and foundation requirements based upon slope, soil stability and seismicity. Although we will need to evaluate your project to provide a more accurate estimate of the total budget for your project, you can estimate your approximate total budget using the following table and formula:

Most Blu customers want to finance their home purchase. Typically you begin with a construction loan, which finances the project until home construction is completed, and then rolls into a permanent home mortgage. Loan-to-value ratios vary by bank and personal financial situation, but Blu customers can typically finance about 70-80% of their home and site costs.
