President's Message So Much Garden Fun, So Little Time!

April 2019

Congratulations to the Gardens in Paradise Chair, Randi Broida, Wendy

Walker, Gloria Thomas and the entire GIP Committee on a successful

garden tour this year. Even though we had a bit of rain, same day ticket

sales were strong and lots of folks came out for the tour. From the

delicious lunch at SGC Clubhouse, to the 6 beautiful gardens, the entire Dianne Beaver

event was spectacular in so many ways. Did you check out that living wall? How about the

Ikebana demonstration? Added value at each garden just enhanced the overall

experience.

Fund raising FUN continued throughout March. SGC teamed up with Malbi Decor to hold a

fundraiser to benefit returning Veterans with a portion of the proceeds going to SGC. An

elegant evening with wine and food and generous donors. In addition, we held a Designers'

Showcase auction to sell floral design items donated to SGC by our members. A FUN day

with fellow designers, and we made some money too!

The FUN continues with "I Do, I Do" Flower Show on March 30 with preview party on March

29. All about weddings, with special exhibits and displays, horticulture and floral designs.

Don't forget to buy your tickets to the Annual Meeting to be held on April 15. The meeting

is at the clubhouse and will be catered by Nellie's Catering. I promise a FUN luncheon and

program, including our scholarship award winners. See you there.

The GIP 2019 Preview Party was

fabulous.! A swanky Lamborghini greeted guests, and valet parking was very convenient. The London Bay Model home

in Spice Bay on Siesta Key did not disappoint. It was beautifully landscaped on the outside and superbly decorated on

the inside. Over 100 guests sipped champagne while indulging on tasty appetizers.

The GIP 2019 tour went in like a lion and out like a lamb! The early morning weather did not cooperate, but people

were in line with their umbrellas to sign in. Docents, master gardeners, and parking attendants greeted attendees with

smiles as everyone tried to stay as dry as possible. Late morning the sun came out, dried everything off, and more tickets

were sold! We even ran out of the 500 programs that were printed. Thank goodness we have a very capable copy

machine, and we put it to work!

Tour goers had nothing but wonderful things to say about the diverse selection of houses. They especially liked the

added values including our wonderful Mable Ringling, the sand sculptor, and the living wall.

And then there was the lunch overlooking our beautiful waterfall garden. Wendy Walker and Olivia Haynes (Luncheon

Co-chairs), along with volunteers, outdid themselves. Guests munched on an all-you-can eat salad and sandwich bar.

Many members baked cookies for dessert. Coffee, tea, lemonade, and even mimosas were included. Barbara Rao and

her gals rocked the clever bird of paradise centerpieces. Some attendees even bought some! People enjoyed putting

their mark on the Community Paintings. Our fundraiser chair, CJ Danna won one of them!

owners who were willing to share their extraordinary gardens in support of our club.

A follow up meeting is being planned to go over tour results and to discuss ways of making it even better for next year.

Saturday was a beautiful day for a Wedding (faux Wedding) at the Sarasota Garden

Club, thanks to Betty Call and numerous committee members. Nellie’s Catering

provided mimosas and food (delish), Sue Ellen’s Floral Boutique had a beautiful

design, Ana Molinari Salon, La Mariee Bridal Shop were the vendors for the Flower

Show. It is true what they say, “It takes a village”. There was a tremendous

amount of Hort. Entries, and Floral Designs. You can see more photos on the

MALBI CHARITY EVENT

I would like to seize the opportunity to congratulate Maria Alberta Borri, MALBI DÉCOR, and all the volunteers

that made the ECO VET CHARITY EVENT a huge success. Jean Ruff and Elizabeth Kalban worked so very hard

getting donations from merchants, and along with Maria’s donations from various merchants, the raffle items and

silent auction items were all bid upon and went fast. Jan Johannsen made up a lot of succulent dish gardens which

were very popular. We even sold a lot of note cards that were photos of our gardens by Page Jackson and CJ

Danna. The Vets sold their home-grown herbs and teas. It was a beautiful affair. Maria provided the food that

was catered by Café Epicure (DELISH). We would like to thank Maria for including SGC in this very worthwhile

event. 20% of the proceeds from the event will go to SGC and 80% will go to the Vets. We would like to thank

the volunteers; Jane, Sheila (SGC members), Kelly and Tanina (Maria’s assistants), Giovanni and Emily (raffle

and microphone). Check out the jewelry designed by Angela Caputi from Florence.



March 5, 2019 Floral Design Class

March came in like a lion with Betty Call's Tropical Design Class. Betty demonstrated several

techniques using flowers that grow in the tropics like ginger and heliconia. She embellished her

designs with decorative wood, accessories from her trip to Australia and beautiful silver bowls

Participants made their own creative designs to take home full of bold colors and manipulated foliage.

Blooming Chatter Floral Design Classes (Cont’d) Our next programs will be: April 2, 2019: $25: Fun with Succulent Flowers 10AM-1PM: LIMIT: 30. The team of Dianne Beaver and Jean Ruff are together again to offer fun ideas using succulents. Find out some great ways to use succulents in your home and garden designs. Participants will make and take their own unique succulent dish garden. Make checks payable to the Sarasota Garden Club and mail to SGC, 1131 Boulevard of the Arts, Sarasota, 34236 (941.955.0875). Include the specific classes you wish to take, along with your name, phone number and email address. You will be contacted before classes begin with more specifics. CELEBRATING 60 YEARS

Sarasota Garden Club’s HISTORIC MID-CENTURY MODERN BUILDING

1959-2019 Over 60 years ago members of the Sarasota Garden Club took a leap of faith after much planning and fund raising and built our Mid-Century Modern building designed in the Sarasota School of Architecture in 1959 by John Crowell. It was beautiful and soon the gardens became a show place for our community. After these many years our beloved building desperately needs some major restoration to return to her previous beauty and glory. Our goal to accomplish this is $225,000 by December 2019. How can you help? By participating in one of two programs:

(1) Buy a Brick for our Historic Mid-Century Modern Building by either buying a brick or bricks for each $100 donation. Bricks are customized with your name, a family member’s name, a family name, or business name and will be placed in our garden along with acknowledgement on our Donor’s Board, or

(2) Become a Patron by donating $1,000 to $10,000 and joining other Patrons (both individuals, families, and/or companies). You will be memorialized on a Bronze Garden Plaque to be located in our garden, a brick, and acknowledged on our Donor’s Board.

Ikebana

The Japanese Art of Floral Design

Ikebana is the 6th C. elegant art of Japanese floral design. This art-form was introduced into Japan along with the

advancement of Buddhism. Ikebana International, an organization dedicated to “Friendship through Flowers”, was

founded in 1956 with headquarters in Tokyo, Japan.

This is open to the public; a small $5 donation is appreciated.

We present a special exhibition with some of the most beautiful arrangements by our Chapter members. There will

be demonstrations throughout the day, with some of the arrangements for purchase; a special Ginza shopping

experience in a most beautiful setting within The Sarasota Garden Club Botanical Gardens.

BLOOMING CHATTER - MEMBERSHIP

New Members – February - March 2019

Nancy Ross – and her husband Donald are seasonal residents October through April when they

are not enjoying the remainder of the year in the mountains of North Carolina. She learned of the

SGC by doing online research. Nancy is an avid gardener and board member of the American

Horticultural Society. Nancy is interested in Botanical Gardens. She is an environmental biologist

and stockbroker. Nancy and Donald reside in the seasonal months at 3142 Dick Wilson Drive,

Sarasota 34240.

James J. Whalen and Thomas H. Wentz III are our newest members. They spend part time in

Florida from September to March. They have been long-time followers of our Club and have

attended past garden club tours. They are long-time gardeners, members of the Penn Hort., MC

Hort. and American Horticulture Societies. When not in Florida they enjoy their home in New

Holland, Pennsylvania. Please

welcome these newest members to our Garden Club!

We will be compiling next year’s Yearbook and requesting those who do not have their photos

in the Yearbook, please send a photo to Carilyn Reiter, Membership Chair.

Our March tour of Florida Native Plants Nursery was enjoyed by all that attended. Laurel Schiller was a great speaker on Florida native plants, and how to grow them. We had a private tour of all the plants they grow. After the tour, she gave us a 10% discount on all plants we purchased. Many of us stayed for a bag lunch before heading home.

BROMELIADS

Our program will be "Bromeliads". Co-chairs, Judy and Kay will be the speakers. We will bring in some of our bromeliads to show different ways they can be grown or displayed. Both Kay and Judy grow lots of these plants. A plant exchange will be held so bring in one of your bromeliads and take one home. This is a good way to add to your collection. Guests are always welcome for a $10.00 fee.

We do need suggestions for next year’s programs, so please e-mail your ideas to [email protected] as soon as possible, since we will be working on next year’s programs soon. Also, we will be doing two summer programs which will be announced later. These are usually garden tours.

We will have to cancel the May 8th meeting and have that program at a later time. So take it off your calendar for now.

We all worked hard to get all the gardens ready for GIP, the Flower Show, and addressed the areas that are used for rentals. We added another tree, a Kapok Tree, on the other side of the Butterfly Garden which was donated by Judy Herman, who grew the tree from seeds she planted. Major trimming was done to all trees and bushes as needed. We also added new plantings behind the shed, as well as around the new birdbath, using Florida native plants.

Our next Pot/Luck Lunch will be held on April 12th. Wiley Osborn will be hosting again. We will continue to do this once a month. We all look forward to this relaxing lunch to get to know our fellow Friday Morning Workers.

Ralph Weber and John C. fixed the hand rails on our bridges again. We are doing them differently so they will be safer. We are using a stronger rope that will not rot. They also mounted the fallen Staghorn Fern in a tree near Blvd of the Arts.

Something that needs addressed is the use of the shed. As it is becoming very crowded with all kinds of items. It seems like the building is becoming a storeroom for things that are no longer used. Our working tools and supplies are getting pushed everywhere. Clean-up will be done in early June.

We welcome all members to join us in the gardens each Friday morning. We do have a job for you. We open at 8:00 a.m., we work until 11:00 a.m., and break for cool down time and refreshments.
