Catalyst Answer and turn in!!! (not open book!)
What are the four parts of blood?
Contents of Blood Plasma (55%) Erythrocyes Leukocytes Platelets
Aim What differentiates one blood type from
another?
Learning Target! I CAN explain what differentiates one blood
type from another
A-G-E-N-D-A- Catalyst Brainstorm Lesson Practice
BRAINSTORM! List as many blood types as you know!
Our list...
4 main types A B AB O
Brief History 1901 Karl Landsteiner Later won the Nobel Prize Developed the A-B-O System
Impact Led to successful blood transfusions Millions of lives have been saved
So, what makes A different from B different from O? Presence of an antigen on the surface of an
erythrocyte
Antigen- a substance, usually a protein, that stimulates the body to produce antibodies against it
If you are type A You have an A antigen on your erythrocytes
If you are type B You have a B antigen on your erythrocyes
If you’re type AB, you have both
If you’re type O, you have neither
Blood plasma has proteins called ANTIBODIES What do you know about antibodies?
Antibody A protein in the blood serum that destroys
or inactivates a specific antigen Have a specific shape
A antibodies react with A antigens B antibodies react with B antigens
Type A people have B antibodies
Type B people have A antibodies
Tybe AB people DON’T have antibodies
Type O people have BOTH antibodies
Pulse.check. If you have type A blood, what is your
antigen, what are your antibodies? Antigen = A Antibody = B
Pulse check. If you have type O blood, what are your
antigens and antibodies? Antigens – none Antibodies – A and B
ABO - prevalence in USBlood Type %
A 42
B 10
AB 4
O 44
When an antibody reacts with an antigen, agglutination occurs
Agglutination – the clumping together of red blood cells by the action of an antibody
