Blood oranges from Sicily

Blood oranges from Sicily enjoy from a special territory around the Etna volcano (3350 m). The strong differences between day and night temperatures cause the typical pigmentation.

Varieties of blood orange

The three typical varieties of blood oranges grown in Sicily are:

- Moro- Tarocco- Sanguinello

with a combined availability of 150 days from the mid of December to the mid of May.

The red flesh colour makes them a distinctive product for

Moro

Harvested and marketed from mid December to mid March.

Generally mid size, shape from spherical to elongated.

Strong to full pigmentation, the flesh at full ripening is dark red, seedless, with high juice content, well balanced and slightly acidic taste.

Main clones: Moro Comune, Moro Nucellare 58-8D-l

Tarocco

Harvested and marketed from mid december to mid of May.

Generally mid to large size, shape from spherical to elongated. The fruit shows a typical nipple, more or less pronounced according to the different clones.Light to mid/full pigmentation according to the ripening stage, mid to good juice content, well balanced and strong taste, virtually seedless. The skin is yellow-orange with red tinges.

Main clones: Tarocco Comune, Tarocco Galice, Tarocco Gallo, Tarocco dal Muso, Tarocco Nucellare 57-IE-1, Tarocco Nucellare 61-1E-4, Tarocco Catania, Tarocco Scirè, Tarocco rosso.

Sanguinello

Harvested and marketed from beginning of March to the end of April.

Traditional variety; mid size fruit, skin shows a full orange colour with red tinges; flesh is virtually seedless with good pigmentation, good juice content and well balanced taste.

Main clones: Sanguinello Comune, Sanguinello Moscato,Sanguinello Moscato Nucellare 49-5-3, Sanguinello Moscato Nucellare 49-5-5, Sanguinello Moscato Cuscunà.
