Blissymbols are composed on a grid.

The sky lineand earth linebound the space in which blissymbols are formed. The earth line is the text base line. The sky line is

placed around the same height as upper case letters. The distance between the earth line and sky line is one unit. The space is

divided in half by a middle line, and into quarters by the middle sky lineand the middle earth line.

The lines form the boundaries of three half unit high zones, the sky zone, middle zone, and earth line. There is also an ultra zonewhich is used to hold the grammatical indicators. The ultra zone and infra zonealso are the homes of two SEMI elements.

Each of the elements (or line letters) is identified with a line or a zone. Blissymbols are created by combining elements on the grid

as described below.

The space is further divided horizontally at quarter unit intervals.

Grammatical indicators

The six characters in this class are spacing like conventional characters. They are used as prefixes to identify the parts-of-speech of

symbols. Bliss originally called for these indications to be centered above symbols, like accent marks. This is difficult to do withnave software, so the prefix form is now used.

ConstructionExamples will now be given showing the construction of blissymbols. One or more elements are placed, followed by a base

character. These can then be followed by additional elements and base characters. The final base element must include an additionquarter unit of space which is used for an eighth unit bumper on both sides of the symbol..

Normalization

There are many alternate constructions possible of most blissymbols. All are equally readable by humans, but may presentproblems to computer systems that may want to do some processing on or with the blissymbols. There is a simple algorithm for

normalizing blissymbols. The preferred construction is always normalized.

Combine adjacent base characters. A BLISSYM ONE QUARTER BASE and a BLISSYM TWO QUARTER BASE can be replacedby a BLISSYM THREE QUARTER BASE. There is never need for a base wider than BLISSYM FIVE QUARTER BASE.

A packet packet of elements can be bounded by base characters or normally spacing characters, or by the beginning or ending

of the text. A packet is sorted by its character codes. Superflous elements can be deleted.Base characters are inserted or modified to exactly contain the elements, plus one quarter unit.

Character codes

Currently, the BLISSCII characters are assigned the codes U+EBA1 thru U+EBFD in Unicode's Private Use Area. If use of BLISSCIIbecomes widespread enough, a new set of codes will be assigned, possibly U+2BA1 thru U+2BFD.

There is also an 8-bit form of BLISSCII which uses the codes A1 thru FD. This allows it to coexist with theASCII code. The 8-bit

form of BLISSCII is intended to accommodate older byte-oriented systems.

About the course:

Blissymbolics is a graphical language, inspired by Chinese characters, developed and first

described by Charles Bliss in Semantography (1946). Since the 1970s Blissymbolics is used asmeans of communication for people with no functional speech. Each element, character, in a

Bliss-word represents a concept, and the participants in the course will learn to interpretsequences of different characters i.e., different Bliss-words so that they can derive their meaning

and read Bliss texts. As a graphic alternative communication aid (AAC) Blissymbolics differsfrom picture-based AAC by the logic structure of the Bliss-words and the generalizability of the

Bliss-characters. As AAC, Blissymbolics is a graphical language to grow with. The charactersare both pictorial and ideographic with concrete and abstract meanings. Blissymbolics becomes

Welcome to BCI

Blissymbolics is a symbolic, graphical language that is currently composed of close to 4

500 authorized symbols - or Blisswords. Bliss characters are semantically based and can

be combined and recombined in endless ways to create new Blisswords. Blisswords can

in turn be sequenced to form many types of sentences, and express many grammatical

capabilities. Simple shapes are used to keep the symbols easy and fast to draw.

The BCI Authorized Vocabulary - BCI-AV - represents the latest set of formally

approved Blissymbols that appears in Bliss dictionaries.

Blissymbolics Communication International (BCI) is a non-profit, charitable

organization that has the perpetual, worldwide, exclusive license for the use and

publication of Blissymbols for persons with communication, language, and learning

difficulties. BCI provides leadership world-wide in the development of the system of

Blissymbolics and in its use by persons with severe speech and physical impairments.

Blissymbols are free to use for personal needs and in "free" distribution and services.
