REVEREND KALUS BAPTISES FOUR LOVELY BABIES Baby Joshua was the first to be baptised at St. John's Church on Sunday. The Reverend Rupert Kalus, had the pleasure of welcoming four new youngsters into the Church at St John's last Sunday, September 7th, with five month-old Joshua James Dunn leading the way. Joshua's mother, Clare Dunn of John Street in Shildon, looked on as Fiona Jeffries, Caitlin Bones, Keith Wayper and Nathan Sanderson took their vows as Godparents. Family and friends celebrated with a reception at the Civic Hall. Donna Plews, formerly of Shildon, took her daughter, Aleasha Marie Taylor Plews, the only girl to be baptised this week, up to the font next. Donna, who now lives in Middlesbrough, chose Lauren and Molly Hewitt, Sharon and Peter Hewitt, Daniel and Jade Plews, and Diane McEvoy as Godparents for Aleasha, who was born in February, 2006. Family and friends gathered afterwards at Old Shildon Club to celebrate Aleasha's christening. Next to the font was Joseph Phillip Ramsey, who's parents, Claire Ramsey, a Nurse Specialist, and John Neilson, a Heating Engineer, looked on proudly. Louise Anderson, Andrew Hymas and Anthony Best gladly took the responsibility of becoming five month-old Joseph's Godparents, before joining family and friends for a 'get together' at Elm Road W.M.C. Last but not least, one year- old Will Tutin was taken to the font by his parents to be baptised by Father Kalus. Mam, Amanda Tutin, a Clerical Assistant, and Dad Craig Tutin, a Clerical Officer, who live in Hazeldale Avenue, chose Paul and Debbie Hanmer, Clare Crosby and Angela Chapman to become their son's Godparents. Shildon Elm Road’s Frank Hudson Transport Crook & District League side will travel to Evenwood this weekend to meet the White Swan and, hopefully, maintain the 100% record in the League and top spot in the Division Two table. In the Wear Valley Sunday League Second Division, Shildon Elm Road were, last weekend, involved in a local ‘derby’ match when they entertained Shildon Flag & Whistle and the home team went down by the odd goal in three. Shildon Athletic lost 1 – 0 to Victoria in their last Jackson Anderson Accountants Spennymoor Sunday League fixture, leaving them second from bottom of the table and yet to gain a point. Old Shildon went down by three goals to one when they entertained Quinns last Sunday in the Jackson Anderson Accountants Spennymoor Sunday League First Division, whilst in the same Division, Shildon Fox visited Voltigeur and ran riot, gaining an impressive 8 – 3 victory. These results leave both Shildon sides level on 3 points in the table. FOOTBALL SHORTS... Playing in the Second Division of the South-West Durham Bowls League, Shildon Town ‘B’ team is probably relieved that the 2008 season is now over. Sadly, the team finished at the foot of the table with two fixtures outstanding, against Kelloe and Spennymoor Town and it has been decided that these fixtures will not be fulfilled. Here’s hoping that the 2009 season will prove to be more successful. In the League’s First Division, both Shildon TOWN’S BOWLERS TAKE WOODEN SPOON Town ‘A’ and Shildon Railway lost their last fixture, to Spennymoor Jubilee and Spennymoor ‘A’ respectively. The Shildon Town ‘A’ team finished in third spot in the final table, whilst the Railway were two places behind their town rivals. In the Finals of the League’s Knockout Competitions, held this year at Kelloe, M. Dent and R. Vasey of Shildon Railway will take on a pair from either Addison Park or Bishop Auckland in the Pairs Final. The Shildon Town Veteran bowlers who play in the Third Division of the South- West Durham Veterans’ Bowls League, just missed out on promotion to the Second Division when they lost the final League fixture VETERANS MISS OUT ON PROMOTION to local rivals, Shildon Rail ‘B’. This defeat gave Duham City just the opportunity they needed and a 5 – 3 victory over Spennymoor ‘C’ meant that Durham moved into second place in the table behind Division Champions Fishburn. The season has finally begun for Shildon Railway Juniors after weather delays and postponements. Shildon started as they ended last season with high tempo, high energy play which Fulwell couldn't cope with. This resulted in Shildon’s Greg Upton being up ended in the box. Upton picked himself up and despatched the penalty with ease sending the keeper the wrong way. Shildon's defence was superbly organised with Jordan Tomlinson showing his versatility by dropping in to marshal from the back. Shildon’s attacking play and short passing on the break played dividends when a pinpoint cross by Joe Joyce caught out the Fulwell keeper for Danny Shoulder to power home from close range. This could have been a goal feast for Shildon with Upton and Stainthorpe missing easy chances from close range. Credit to Fulwell who re- organised for the second half and played a high line in an attempt to stifle the home team. To an extent it worked with Shildon’s Dobson and Stainthorpe being court offside on more than one occasion. Fulwell also increased the pressure on Shildon and this paid off with Shildon failing to clear a corner leading to the ball being blasted past Hodgson in the Shildon goal leaving him no chance. Fulwell for a time looked like spoiling the party with Shildon's lack of pre season preparations taking its toll, but on the break could easily have taken a more comprehensive lead with Tomlinson missing chances late on which as the season goes on will see him score. Special mention to stand in keeper Hodgson for pulling off one save when the pressure was on from Fulwell and could of changed the game. Final score - Shildon Railway Juniors 2, Fulwell Juniors 1. Man of the Match went to Jordan Tomlinson. A true Middlesbrough Football Club supporter is appealing to Crier readers to help him lay his hands on the last three football programmes that are missing from his vast collection. The three away programmes he requires are Bournemouth v Boro, 1966- 67, Workington v Boro, 1966-67, Sheffield United v Boro, 1976-77, in the Anglo Scottish Cup, (single sheet). This dedicated supporter has been collecting match programmes since 1960 to the present day and these last three would make his collection complete.
