Excellence of Reciting Durd Sharf on Friday

he Prophet of Rama, the Intercessor of Umma

said, The one who recites Durd Sharf 200

times upon me on Friday, his 200 years sins will be forgiven.(Kanz-ul-Umml, V1, P256, ad 2238, Dr-ul-Kutub-ul-Ilmiyya, Beirut)

Dear Islamic brothers! How fortunate we are as All has

blessed us with the favour of Jumua-tul-Mubrak for the sakeof His beloved Rasl . Regretfully, like otherordinary days, we spend even Friday heedlessly whereas it is aday of Ed, it is superior to all other days, the fire of Hell is notblazed up on Friday and the gates of Hell are not opened onFriday night. On the day of resurrection, Friday will be brought

    * Friday.

in the form of a bride; the fortunate Muslim dying on Fridayattains the rank of martyrdom and remains safe from thetorment of the grave.

The renowned Mufassir, akm-ul-Ummat, Muft Amad YrKhn says, The awb of the ajj performed onFriday is equivalent to that of 70 ajj as the awb of a singlegood deed performed on Friday is enhanced 70 times. (Derived

from Mir, V2, P323-325) (As Friday is an immensely sacred day, therefore,) The punishment of a sin committed on Friday isalso increased 70 times. (ibid, P236)

How can words express the excellence of Friday! By the nameof Jumua, All has revealed a complete Sra that is

    present in the 28th

part of the Holy Qurn. All says inthe 9th ya of Sra-tul-Jumua:

    Translation from Kanz-ul-Imn

O those who believe! When the call foral is given on Jumua

    (Friday), rush towards the remembrance of All and leave trading;

this is better for you if you know.

When did our Prophet Perform his First

Jumuaal?arat Allma Mauln Sayyid Muammad Nam-ud-DnMurdbd says, When Makk Madan Muaf

was on his way to Madna for migration, hestopped at a place called Qub at the time of Chsht onMonday, 12th Rabi-ul-Awwal. He

    stayed there

for four days (Monday to Thursday); during the stay, he

laid the foundation stone of a Masjid. On Friday, he proceeded towards Madna. When they reachedthe area of the Ban Slim Ibn-e-Awf, it was time to offer theJumuah al; people consecrated that place as Masjid wherethe Holy Prophet

    offered the (first) Jumuah

al and delivered a sermon. (Khaz-ain-ul-Irfn, P667, Lahore)

! The glorious Masjid-e-Jumua still exists there; thevisitors behold the Masjid for the attainment of blessings andoffer Nafl alover there. ! This sinner (the author)has also been blessed with the privilege of visiting the Masjid a

    few times.

    Meaning of the Word Jumua

The renowned Mufassir,akm-ul-Ummatarat Muft AmadYr Khn writes, As all the creatures assembled in

their beings on this day and the completion of the creation tookplace on the very same day, clay for arat Sayyidun dam

was also collected on this day; similarly, people congregateand perform the Fridayal on this day; therefore, it is calledJumua on account of the aforementioned reasons. Before theadvent of Islam, the Arabs used to call it Arba. (Mir, V2, P317)

How Many Times Exalted Rasl Offered Jumuaal?

The Rasl of mankind, the peace of our heart and mind, themost generous and kind offered almost 500Jumua alin his apparent life as offering of Jumuah alcommenced subsequent to the migration after which the totalperiod of the apparent life of the Holy Prophet is ten years and there are 500 Fridays in ten years period. (Mir,V2 P346)

    Seal on Heart

    Makk Madan Muaf

said, The oneabandoning three Jumuas al out of laziness, All will seal his heart. (Al-Mustadrak, V1, P589, ad 1120, Dr-ul-Marifa,Beirut)

Jumua al is Far-e-Ain and its Fariyyat (obligation) ismore emphatic than that ofal-tul-uar; the denier of its

obligation is Kfir (disbeliever). (Durr-e-Mukhtr ma Rad-dul-Mutr,V3, P3)

The Excellence of Wearing Turban on Friday

The Holy Prophet said, Indeed, All and His Angels send Durd upon those who wear turban onFriday. (Majma-uz-Zawid, V2, P394, ad 3075, Dr-ul-Fikr Beirut)

    Cure is Bestowed

arat Sayyidun umad bin Abd-ur-Ramn narrates

via his father, The one who trims his nails on Friday, All will remove his disease and bless him with cure. (Muannaf Ibn-e-Ab Shaba, V2, P65, Dr-ul-Fikr Beirut)

Protection from Afflictions up to Ten Days

adr-ush-Shara arat Mauln Muammad Amjad AlAam states, A blessed ad says that the one whotrims his nails on Friday, All will protect him fromafflictions up to the next Friday including three more days, i.e.ten days in total. (Takira-tul-Mawt la bin Al-Qasrn, ad 765,Salfiyya, Beirut)

In accordance with one more narration, The one trimming hisnails on Friday, mercy will approach (him) and (his) sins willbe removed. (Tanz-tush-Shara-tul-Marfa, V2, P269, Dr-ul-Kutub-ul-Ilmiyya BeirutBar-e-Sharat, Part 16, P195, Madna-tul-Murshid,

    Bareilly Sharf)

It is preferable to have hair and nails trimmed after Jumuaal. (Durr-e-Mukhtr ma Rad-dul-Mutr, V9, P581, Multan)

A Cause of Reduction in Sustenance

adr-ush-Shara arat Mauln Muammad Amjad AlAam says, Although it is preferable to trim nails onFriday, yet if the nails are very long; one should not wait tillFriday as growing long nails is a cause of reduction in sustenance.(Bar-e-Sharat, Part 4, P195, Madna-tul-Murshid Bareilly Sharf)

Angels Write the Names of the Fortunate OnesThe beloved and blessed Prophet said, Onthe day of Friday, the angels deputed at every door of theMasjid write the names of comers. The early comer is like theone who gives adaqa of a camel in the path of All .The next comer is like the one who gives a cow and then the

next one is like the donor of a sheep; then the next one is likethe donor of a hen and then the next one is like that of an egg. When the Imm sits (to deliver the sermon), the angels closethe books of deeds and come to listen to the sermon. (aBukhr, V1, P127)

The renowned Mufassir,akm-ul-Ummatarat Muft AmadYr Khn Nam says, Some Scholars have said thatthe angels stay (at the doors of the Masjid) from dawn whereassome other opine they stay from sunrise; the stronger opinion, however, is that they come and stay when the sun begins todecline (from zenith) because it is the instant when timing of

Jumua (al) begins. The foregoing narration also clearlyindicates that the angels know the names of every comer. It is

noteworthy that if 100 people enter the Masjid initially, they allwould be regarded as the first-comer. (Mir, V2, P345)

The Enthusiasm for Offering Jumuaal in the

    First Century

ujja-tul-Islamarat Sayyidun Imm Muammad Ghazl says, During the first century, people used to proceed

towards the Main Masjid at the time of Sar and after al-tul-Fajr holding lamps in their hands for offering al-tul-Jumua. There used to be so huge crowd in the streets that itwould seem as if it was the day of Ed, but gradually, this spiritdied out. Thus, it is said that the very first Bidat (innovation)that evolved in Islam is the abandonment of early proceeding

towards the Main Masjid. Regretfully, the Muslims do not feelashamed that Jews proceed towards their places of worship inthe early morning on Saturday and Sunday; further, seekers ofworldly luxuries also head towards the marketplace in the earlymorning for trading and earning wealth; so, why dont theseekers of the Hereafter compete with such people! (Iy-ul-

    Ulm, V1, P246 Dr-us-dir Beirut)

    ajj of the Poor

    arat Sayyidun Abdulla bin Abbs

    narrates that

the Prophet of mankind, the Peace of our heart and mind, themost generous and kind said:

al-tul-Jumua is the ajj of Maskn (destitute) and inanother narration, it is stated that al-tul-Jumua is the ajjof Fuqara (poor). (Kanz-ul-Umml, V7, P290, ad 21027-21028,Dr-ul-Kutub-ul-Ilmiyya, Beirut)

Proceeding for Jumuaal early is Equivalentto ajj

The beloved and blessed Prophet said, Nodoubt, there is one ajj and one Umra for you on everyFriday. Therefore, early proceeding for al-tul-Jumua is

(equivalent to) ajj and waiting for Ar al having offeredal-tul-Jumua is (equivalent to) Umra. (Sunan-ul-Kubr lilBayaq, ad 5980, V3, P342, Dr-ul-Kutub-ul-Ilmiyya, Beirut)

    The awb ofajj and Umra

ujja-tul-Islam arat Sayyidun Imm Muammad Ghazl

says, (Having offered al-tul-Jumua) one shouldremain in the Masjid till al-tul-Ar and staying in the Masjidtill al-tul-Maghrib is even more preferable. It is said that theone who offers al-tul-Jumua in the Main Masjid, staysthere afterwards and offers al-tul-Ar in the same MainMasjid, there is the awb ofajj for him, and the one who

stays till al-tul-Maghrib and offers Maghrib al in thesame Masjid, there is the awb ofajj and Umra for him.

    The Superior Day

The Prophet of mankind, the peace of our heart and mind, the most generous and kind said, Friday issuperior to all other days; it is most magnificent (of all days) in

the court of All . It is superior to even Ed-ul-A andEd-ul-Fir. It has five particular features:

    1. All created Sayyidun dam on this day.2. Sayyidun dam descended upon the earth on

    this day.

    3. Sayyidun dam passed away on the same day.4. On Friday, there is one such moment in which if someone

prays for anything, he will be granted whatever he askedfor, provided he does not ask for anything arm.

    5. The Judgement Day will take place on Friday. There is no such distinguished angel, the sky, the earth, wind, mountain and river that does not fear Friday. (Sunan Ibn-e-Mja, V2, P8, ad 1084, Dr-ul-Marifa Beirut)

According to another narration, the Holy Prophet said, There is no animal that does not scream from dawn to

sunrise every Friday out of the fear of the Day of Judgement, except man and Jin. (Muwaan Imm Mlik, V1, P115, ad 246, Dr-ul-Marifa, Beirut)

    Supplications are Fulfilled

The Holy Prophet said, On Friday, there isone such moment in which if a Muslim asks All for anything,All will definitely grant him. That moment is very short.(a Muslim, V1, P281)

    Seek between Ar and Maghrib

The beloved Rasl of All said, On Friday, look for the moment that is desired from Ar to the sunset.(Tirmi, V2, P30, ad 489, Dr-ul-Fikr Beirut)

Saying of the Author of Bar-e-Sharat

arat adr-ush-Shara Mauln Muammad Amjad AlAam says, There are two very strong statementsconcerning the instant in which supplication is fulfilled (onFriday):

    1. From the moment when the Imm sits for the sermon tothe end of the al.

    2. The last instant of Friday. (Bar-e-Sharat, Part 4, P86, Madna-tul-Murshid Bareilly Sharf)

Which is the Moment of Acceptance?

The renowned Mufassir akm-ul-Ummat Muft Amad YrKhn Nam says, At every night there is a moment

during which Du (supplication) is answered but Friday is theonly day which has such a moment during the day time.

    Blessings of Jumua

    11

However, it is not known for sure as to which moment itactually is. The strong likelihood is that it is either between twosermons or a short while before Maghrib. Commenting onanother ad, the reverent Muft says that there are fortydifferent opinions of scholars regarding this moment, out ofwhich two are the most likely; as per one opinion, it is betweentwo sermons while, according to the other, it is at the time ofsunset.

    A Parable

arat Sayyidatun Fima Zar used to sit in herujra (small room) a short while prior to sunset and wouldask Fia , her maid, to stand outside; as the sun

    begins to set, Fia

would inform her about it andarat Sayyida would raise her blessed hands forsupplication. It is better to ask a concise supplication at thatmoment; for instance the following Quranic supplication:

    Translation from Kanz-ul-Imn

O our Lord! Give us goodness in the world and give us goodness in

the Hereafter and secure us from the torment of Hell.

    (Part 2, Sra-tul-Baqara, Verse 201)(Derived from Mir, V2, P319-325)

One can recite Durd Sharf as well with the intention ofsupplication as Durd Sharf is itself a magnificent supplication.

  • 8/6/2019 Blessings of Jumah

    12

It is preferable to supplicate between both sermons by heartwithout raising hands and without uttering anything verbally.

14 Million & 400 Thousands Released from Hell

    Every Friday

The Holy Prophet said, There are 24 hours inday and night of Friday, there is not a single such hour in

which All does not release six hundred thousand (suchsinners) from Hell for whom Hell had become due. (Musnad-e-Ab Yal, V3, P235, ad 3471, Dr-ul-Kutub-ul-Ilmiyya Beirut)

    Security from Grave Torment

The Holy Prophet said, The one who diesduring the day or night of Friday, he will be saved from the

torment of the grave and will be resurrected on the day of judgement with the seal of martyrs. (ilya-tul-Auliy, V3, P181,ad 369, Dr-ul-Kutub-ul-Ilmiyya Beirut)

Sins between Two Fridays Forgivenarat Sayyidun Salmn Frs narrates that the HolyProphet said, The one who takes bath onFriday, attains the purity (sanctification) that was possible forhim, applies oil and perfume available at home, heads (towardsthe Masjid) to offer al, does not cause separation between

two people, i.e. does not sit between two people by intrusion, offers the al ordained for him and stays silent during the

    awb of 200 Years Worship

arat Sayyidun iddq-e-Akbar and arat Sayyidun Imrnbin an narrate that the Holy Prophet said, The one taking bath on Friday, his sins and misdeeds are

removed; when he proceeds (to offer al) 20 good deeds arewritten for his every step. According to another narration, theawb of 20 years good deeds is written for his every step. (Al- Mujam-ul-Awsa lil abarn, ad 3397, V2, P314, Dr-ul-Kutub-ul-

    Ilmiyya, Beirut)

When he finishes the al, he is given the awb of 200 yearsworship. (ibid, ad 292, V18, P139, Dr Iy-ut-Tur-il-Arab, Beirut)

Deeds Presented to Deceased Parents Every Friday

The Holy Prophet said, (Your) Deeds arepresented before All every Monday and Thursdaywhereas they are presented to the Prophets and parentsevery Friday. Pleased by (your) good deeds, the beauty andbrilliance of their faces enhance. Therefore, fear All and do not grieve your deceased ones by committing sins.

Commenting on the foregoing ya, arat Allma MaulnSayyid Muammad Nam-ud-Dn Murdbd

    writes

in Khaz-ain-ul-Irfn, Having offered Friday al, it ispermissible for you to occupy yourselves in earning livelihood,or gain awb by acquiring (religious) knowledge, visiting thesick, attending funerals, visiting scholars or performing othersuch pious deeds.

Attending a Gathering of Islamic KnowledgeAttending a gathering of religious knowledge after Fridayalis preferable. (Tafsr-e-Maar, V9, P418, Lahore) Therefore, ujja-tul-Islam arat Sayyidun Imm Muammad Ghazl narrates that arat Sayyidun Anas bin Mlik says,

This verse does not refer to worldly trade and business (only),rather, it refers to seeking knowledge, visiting brothers, visitingthe sick, attending funerals and carrying out other such activities.(Kmy-e-Sadat, V1, P191, Intishrt Ganjna, Tehran)

Dear Islamic Brothers! There are eleven conditions for renderingJumua al Wjib; if even either of them is not found, it

will no longer remain Far. However, if someone still offers it,his al will be valid; and it is preferable for (such) a sane, adult male (for whom Jumua is not Far on account of theabsence of any condition) to offer Jumua al. If a minoroffers Jumua al, it will be regarded as Nafl because alis not Far for him. (Durr-e-Mukhtr ma Rad-dul-Mutr, V3, P26-29)

Those for whom al is Far but al-tul-Jumua is not Faron account of any Shar exemption, are not exempted from

ur al on Friday; such people have to offer ur al inlieu ofal-tul-Jumua.

The Sunan and Mustaab-bt of Friday

The Mustaab-bt of Jumua include proceeding to offer al-

tul-Jumua in initial time, using Miswk, wearing nice whiteclothes, applying oil and fragrance sitting in the first af (row)while having a bath is Sunna. (Alamgr, V1, P149)

The Time ofGhusl on Friday?akm-ul-Ummat aratMuft Amad Yr Khn says,

Some scholars say that having a bath on Friday is aSunna for Fridayal, not for Friday itself, (therefore) havinga bath on Friday is not a Sunna for those for whom al-tul-Jumuais not Far. According to some scholars

,one should have bath on Friday close to the time ofal-tul-Jumua so that he offers the al with the same Wu

(made during the bath). However, the most authentic verdictis that the time for Fridays bath starts from the break of dawn.(Mir, P334)

The foregoing account also clarifies that Fridays bath is not aSunna for women, travellers etc. for whom Fridayal isnot Wjib.

    Fridays Bath is Sunnat-e-Ghar Muakkada

Allma ibn bidn Shm says, Having a bath forJumua al is one of the Sunan-e-Zawid; (and therefore)the abandoner of Fridays bath will not be objected to. (Durr-e-Mukhtr ma Rad-dul-Mutr, V1, P308)

The Excellence of Sitting Closer During the

Sermonarat Sayyidun Samura bin Jundab narrates thatthe Holy Prophet said, Be present at the timeof the sermon and sit close to the Imm because the farther aperson remains from the Imm, the later he will enter Heaven,

though he (a Muslim) will definitely enter the Heaven. (Ab Dwd,V1, P410, ad 1108, Dr Iy-ut-Tur-il-Arab, Beirut)

    No awb of Jumua

The one who talks while the Imm is delivering the sermon islike a donkey carrying a burden. Similarly, the one asking his

companion to get silent during the sermon will not gain theawb of Jumua (al). (Musnad Imm Amad bin anbal, V1, P494,ad 2033)

Listening to the Sermon Silently is Far

    The acts that are

arm during al such as eating, drinking, greeting, saying Salm, replying to Salm and even inspiringsomeone to righteousness are arm during the sermon as

well. However, the Khab (the deliverer of sermon) can inspiresomeone to righteousness. It is Far for all the attendees tolisten and remain silent while the sermon is being delivered.Staying silent is Wjib even for those present so far from theImm that they cannot listen to the sermon. If someone is seencommitting any misdeed, he may be prevented either by thegesture of hand or nod of head; preventing him by utteringany word or sound is not permissible. (Durr-e-Mukhtr ma Rad-dul-Mutr, V3, P35-36)

Listener of Sermon is not Allowed to Recite Even

Durd SharfIf the Khab mentioned the blessed name of the Holy Prophet during the sermon, the listeners should reciteDurd in their hearts; reciting Durd verbally at that time isnot allowed. Likewise, uttering is not allowed onlistening to the blessed names of companions of the ExaltedProphet during the sermon. (ibid, P32)

Listening to the Nik Sermon is Wjib

In addition to the sermon delivered for al-tul-Jumua, it isalso Wjib to listen to other sermons such as the ones delivered

for Ed al, Nik etc. (Durr-e-Mukhtr ma Rad-dul-Mutr, V3,P32)

Business Becomes Impermissible as Soon as the

    First An is Uttered

As soon as the first An is uttered, it is Wjib to start makingeffort to get to the Masjid for offering al-tul-Jumua; it is

also Wjib to put off trading and other activities contrary tothe preparations for al-tul-Jumua. Similarly, sale and purchasewhile proceeding to Masjid is also impermissible and tradingin the Masjid is a severe sin. If the one having meal hears thevoice of An for al-tul-Jumua and fears that he may missal-tul-Jumua in case of having meal, he has to stop eating

and proceed to the Masjid for offering al-tul-Jumua. Oneshould get to the Masjid in a dignified manner for al-tul-Jumua. (Alamgr, V1, P149, Durr-e-Mukhtr ma Rad-dul-Mutr, V3, P38)

These days, people have drifted away from religious knowledge;like other worships, people commit sins as a result of making

mistakes in listening to sermon. Therefore, it is my humblerequest that the Khab (deliverer of sermon) make followingannouncement every Friday prior to the An of Khubabefore sitting on the pulpit and earn hoards of awb:

    Seven Madan Pearls of Sermon

    1. A ad says, The one who passes over peoples necks onFriday, makes a bridge towards Hell. (Tirmi, V2, P48, ad

513, Dr-ul-Fikr Beirut) One of the explanations of this adis that people will enter the Hell trampling up on him.

    2. To sit facing the Khab is a Sunna of the BlessedCompanions . (Derived from Mishk, P123)

    3. Some of our past saints said, One should listento the sermon in the sitting-posture (as one sits in Qada),folding hands (under navel) during the first sermon and

placing them on thighs during the second; hewill earn the awb of offering two rakat al. (MirShar Mishk, V2, P338)

    4. Al-arat Imm Amad Raz Khn says,When one hears the blessed name of the Holy Prophet

during the sermon, he should recite Durdin his heart as it is Far to remain silent during sermon.(Fatw-e-Razavyya, V8, P365 Raz Foundation Lahore)

    5. It is stated in Durr-e-Mukhtr, During the sermon, eating, drinking, talking (even saying ), replying tosomeones greeting, and inspiring others towards

    righteousness, all are arm. (Durr-e-Mukhtr ma Rad-dul-Mutr, V3, P35)

    6. Al-arat says, Walking during the sermon isarm. The reverent scholars

even say that ifsomeone enters the Masjid during the sermon, he muststop wherever he is without proceeding further as walking

would be an act and no act is permissible during thesermon. (Fatw-e-Razavyya, V8, P334, Raz Foundation Lahore)

    7. Al-arat says, During the sermon, evenlooking somewhere turning the head is arm. (ibid)

    An Important Ruling of Leadingal-tul-Jumua

With regard to the leading of al-tul-Jumua there is animportant matter of which people are quite inattentive. al-tul-Jumua is considered like other al and everyone is

allowed to lead al-tul-Jumua; it is impermissible as leadingal-tul-Jumua is one of the responsibilities of the Islamicruler or his deputy. In the states where Islamic Sovereigntydoes not exist, the greatest Sunn Scholar having correct beliefscan lead al-tul-Jumua as he is the substitute of the Islamicruler in issuing Shar rulings; al-tul-Jumua cannot be held

without his permission. If there is no such scholar, the oneappointed by common people can lead the al. In spite ofthe presence of a scholar, people cannot themselves appointanyone else, nor can just a few people appoint someone as theImm on their own behalf. Holding al-tul-Jumua in thisway is not proven (in Islamic history). (Bar-e-Sharat, Part 4,

    P95, Madna-tul-Murshid Bareilly Sharf)
