We shall be examining the letters to the Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians and Colossians, and the amazing foundational truths that the Apostle Paul shares under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. We shall be encouraging everyone to take a special reading challenge for the month of October to read through these short Bible books. We will have available a study guide that you can use alone or gather some friends at a home or at the church to share your insights. You can even share a bowl of popcorn together as you share. Four short weeks, four short books of the Bible, but a mega amount of spiritual food for your soul! If you havent studied the Bible in awhile or want to start for the first time, this is an opportunity to give it a try. Study Guide and Scripture Reading Plan will be available in the narthex on Sundays. If you want to host a group, contact Pastor Dana ([email protected]) and she will give you a free box of microwave popcorn to share with your group. We also have an online weekly YouVersion plan group that will correspond to this series. I love these letters of Paul, full of powerful take away truth, that will inspire you to live likePOPCORN! BROOK HILL WEEKDAY PRESCHOOL Teaching and Caring in a Loving Environment

October 2019

The 2019 - 2020 school year at Brook Hill has gotten off to a wonderful start! Parents and teachers have worked together to help the children adjust to the new school year and the routines of preschool. There have been a few tears and they have been short–lived and are definitely outweighed now by many smiling faces.

We are excited to share that we have 68 children enroll in the Preschool this year. This is the highest amount that we have had for many years and we are thankful for the growth!

October will be a month of new experiences for many of the children as we explore the wonders of fall in preschool. The 3’s and 4’s classes will be taking field trips to Summer’s Farm to pick pumpkins, learn how a pumpkin grows, take a hay ride, and learn about farm animals.

We are very blessed to have a fantastic Preschool Committee who run the Preschool with such dedication, skill and love. We thank each of them for their support! Happy Autumn!

Coming to

Brook Hill November 2nd!

Stephen Ministry Introductory Workshop Who is invited? Local Churches and the Brook Hill Congregation.

Want to learn to care for people who are grieving and reach out to others in a distinctively Christian way? On Saturday, November 2nd, Brook Hill will host a

Stephen Ministry Introductory Workshop from 9:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. The half-day workshop is designed both to enhance participants’ caregiving skills and to help congregations explore ways to expand their caring ministry. Registration begins at 8:00 A.M., and refreshments will be served.

One reason we’re so excited about helping other congregations learn about Stephen Ministry is that it is making a significant difference in the life of our own congregation. Since we began Stephen Ministry in 2013, 29 laypeople have gone through 50 hours of training in order to provide quality one-to-one Christian care to hurting people. If you think you might be interested in being a Stephen Minister, attending the workshop is a great way to learn more.

Members of Brook Hill are invited to attend the workshop free of charge. If you would like to attend, please contact Elaine Luttrell at 240-357-0178 or email her at [email protected]. Don’t miss out on this wonderful opportunity for personal growth and to learn more about Stephen Ministry.

CrossRoads Prayer Walk

This summer Ann-Marie Millunzi from Brook Hill United Methodist Church presented a plan to Joe and Maria for building a prayer walk at CrossRoads. The walk would help her earn Gold Award as a Girl Scout as well as complete a rough trail on the property we had started several years ago. The walk, however, is much more than just a trail. It has ten designated stops, complete with a bench and sign post with reflective questions. The trail begins behind the main building and includes a map of all 10 spots. After continuing down the fenceline, the walk descends into the small patch of woods at our western end of the proper-ty. It meanders through the woods before passing by the quarry and then finishing around our small pond in the front yard. All are welcome to come and use the prayer walk, enjoy-ing the peace and quiet at CrossRoads as they spend time with the Lord.

Connect Ministry: First Connect: Are you friendly? Do you feel it is important for guests to feel welcome? Are you willing to get here about ten minutes before a service to help guests get connected? God has a purpose for you at Brook Hill to be one of our First Connect team members. We need friendly peo-ple at all three services on Sunday morning. Community Connect: People in this team help Stephanie Fletcher, as coordinator, to help peo-ple discover where their passion and gifts can be used to serve. This team also assists with the quarterly Discover Brook Hill luncheons. Faith Connect: We are developing a team of people to plan small group studies, facilitate studies and host studies in the coming months. If you are interested in assisting in this area, let us know! Contact Pastor Dana to pray with you about serving in these ways and to answer any questions you may have.

Our hearts are filled with gratitude and love for all the wonderful things that were done for Gary and our family during his valiant fight against the cancer that invaded his body. There were so many things I’m afraid to try mentioning all of them fearing I will neglect something!! Just know there were many “God Moments” that helped us through this very difficult time and will never be forgotten. But then, of course this is what our church does, and that’s why it’s so special. We were and are, indeed blessed.

With much love and thanks, The Gary Linton Family

Thinking Christians

A friend once told me that she was a Christian, but she was not interested in studying the Bible or worrying about theological issues. Many Christians wouldn’t admit what their lives reveal. They don’t want to think too deeply about their faith.

There are many reasons for this. Some were warned about being over-intellectual in studying the scripture. Others were squashed when they tried to ask questions in order to understand more. Some are insecure and are afraid to be challenged by information that may shake their faith.

Jesus quoted the first commandment given to Moses, "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' Matthew 22:37 NIV

We have been given a mind to learn and to understand, a heart and emotions to love and value God and people and ideas and nature. The soul or spirit is the avenue for communication with God.

Loving and valuing God is only possible to the extent that we know God. The mind and its activity of thinking about the Scriptures as the record of God’s revelation of Himself are basic to increasing our knowledge of God. Knowledge of God increases love for God and appreciation of His love for us. Then our spirits rise in praise and adoration of our glorious and gracious Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

A very old English prayer says of Scriptures that we should “...hear, read, mark, learn and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life.”

Matthew :22:37 NIV emphasis is mine

The Book of Common Prayer

Join Kathy Mitchell, a Brook Hill member, for our second "God Stories and Lunch".

Kathy is the author of the newly published book: When God Speaks, Are You Listening? She will be sharing some of the God stories she has written about and the process of working together with God to write and publish this book. Kathy gives examples of many different ways God communicated with her and helped her throughout her life. Kathy will share the rest of the story of God’s perfect timing of this book to be published.

The book is available on Amazon. Come and enjoy a lite lunch and share some of your God stories.

Sign up in the narthex or email Pastor Dana ([email protected]) if you would like to attend.
