HARVEY NASH PLC RENEWED THEIR LEASE LAST YEAR SO WE PUT DIRECTOR STEVE RAKE IN THE HOT-SEAT FOR THIS EDITION OF BLEAT TO FIND OUT WHAT THEY GET UP TO IN MARSHALL’S MILL.

PROFILE

Hi Steve, thanks for answering these for us.

First up an easy question for you; how long has the company been going?22 Years.

How many of you are there?14 staff in total here at our Leeds office.

For the benefit of those who don’t know Harvey Nash, can you tell us a bit about the business and what work you do?Harvey Nash is a global professional recruitment consultancy and IT outsourcing service provider, we are committed to delivering the very best talent and IT solutions to a broad base of international clients. We operate from 37 offices covering the USA, Europe and Asia. The group is a trusted advisor to some of the world’s leading businesses, governments and institutions and we pursue the highest levels of integrity and quality in providing a unique portfolio of services: executive search, interim management, IT and finance recruitment, IT outsourcing and most recently, a new Human Resources Department.

STILL GOING STRONG AFTER ALL THESE YEARS

You moved to Marshall’s Mill way back in 2000, what attracted you to the space? This office had a different character which you don’t find in city centre or business park office blocks. There is a sense of community here and local business owners are friendly and very welcoming.

What key elements did you take into consideration when you were looking for office space? We were looking for a bright open planned office space which would ideally be close to the city centre as some of my colleagues commute via train or bus. Other major factors were separate meeting rooms and Marshall’s Mill offered this. The office space we hold has original features in place and this allows for a creative working environment. A lot of our clients when visiting comment on how unique this building is and how its conversion into offices is a brilliant idea.

How’s business going at the moment? The major part of our business is IT recruitment and we are finding the market is improving, generally IT functions have not been impacted as severely by the recession as other functions. IT is still invested in by many of our clients – often to improve operational efficiencies AND seek strategic advantage so that they are well positioned to benefit from the economic upturn.

Sounds very positive, what are you working on just now?We have recently won a number of major Preferred Supplier contracts, for example, ASDA and William Hill. In addition, our relationship driven approach also plays well to the SME market where we are seen as a true partner. In particular there is significant demand for Software Developers, Project and Programme Management staff – for contractors and permanent hires.

What’s next for you and the business?Continued success should see us shortly being in a position to open an additional regional business, based in Manchester.

You’ve been a tenant here for a while now, what is it that you like most about working in the Urban Village? This area has easy access off the motorway; the friendly management team; 24hr security. The local bars the staff are friendly and it’s nice to be recognised each time we go back. We each have regular client meetings and it’s great to have the option of the selected restaurants in the area to choose from when taking them out. We all enjoy our mid morning breakfasts at Pickled Pepper and Out of The Woods, extremely friendly staff.

If you’d like to find out a bit more or if you are looking for any of the services Harvey Nash offer then get in touch with Steve Rake ([email protected]) and tell him you heard about them via Bleat.

The staff relished the opportunity to celebrate Christmas this way; Albert Ellis, CEO Harvey Nash commented “many felt it was far more meaningful and personally rewarding.”

WELCOME TO THE URBAN VILLAGE

WELCOME TO YORKSHIRE CEO GARY VERITY TOOK TIME OUT OF HIS PACKED SCHEDULE TO TELL US A BIT MORE ABOUT OUR AWARD WINNING REGIONAL TOURISM AGENCY.

You seem really busy at the moment, how are things going?Despite the economic climate we are incredibly positive about the future. The county has been bucking tourism trends with more people choosing to visit us here in Yorkshire.

We have achieved several awards including the World’s Leading Marketing Campaign at the World Travel Awards 2010 – it’s the industry Oscar and a fantastic achievement against major global brands.

What are you currently working on?Our next big thing is the Welcome to Yorkshire annual conference Y11. It’s the largest in the UK and is our big reveal of Welcome to Yorkshire’s major plans for the coming year. Those who are connected in any way shape or form to the tourism industry need to book a place now as they are going fast!

How long has the company been going? We rebranded as Welcome to Yorkshire in April 2009 and haven’t looked back since.

Tell us a bit more about what you get up to at Welcome to YorkshireWelcome to Yorkshire is the county’s official tourism agency, charged with increasing the value of the regional visitor economy by 5% year on year. The value of Yorkshire tourism has grown to £7bn, up from £5.9bn two years ago, adding 4,000 jobs to the 250,000 already employed in the industry. Our aim is to make Yorkshire the UK’s top destination.

Why did you choose the Dry Sand Foundry?Welcome to Yorkshire needed to be centrally located within easy reach of all of its partners.

What else was important for you all when you were on the search for the perfect work space? The open plan working environment was ideal for flexible working and in addition to the practicalities the building is a perfect showcase for hosting meetings and presentations.

And after Y11? What’s next? That would be telling. Come to Y11 and you’ll discover our ambitious plans for yourself.

That’s reason enough for me! Finally, obviously you love your offices but what else makes the Urban Village stand out for you?The village has a fantastic sense of community. It’s a place where many of us work and enjoy time out. There’s a wonderful selection of places to eat and drink and the best thing is that everyone’s on first name terms.

To keep on top of all goings on in Yorkshire you’d do worse than to follow these guys on twitter @Welcome2Yorks or checking out their website.

IN THE LAST ISSUE of Bleat we introduced you to the London member of the igloo family, Bermondsey Square; this time we’re off to Cardiff and one of the newest additions to the clan, Porth Teigr.

The last piece in the jigsaw that is the Cardiff Bay Inner Harbour development, we, igloo have kick started the development of Porth Teigr with a first phase development for BBC Cymru Wales – a purpose built drama village and production studios which will see Casualty, Pobol Y Cwm, Doctor Who and The Sarah Jane Adventures all filmed in facility. This element of Porth Teigr is due for completion in the summer, with Casualty set for filming in September this year and Doctor Who in March 2012.

PROFILE

Porth Teigr, extending to 38 acres on the south side of the Bay was named to reflect the historic use of the site as an important international port and conjure the spirit of the Cardiff’s Tiger Bay.

Elsewhere on the site, we’re working with the Welsh Assembly Government to create a new Digital Media Centre which will provide opportunities for small, high growth businesses and freelancers and provide affordable infrastructure to stimulate and support a cluster of small, high value creative businesses – similar to what we have here in Leeds.

To find out more, check out the igloo site: http://www.igloo.uk.net/projects/cardiff-tiger-bay. And, watch this space for a bespoke Porth Teigr site: www.portteigr.com

Keep an eye on…

WE ARE ALSO PLANNING lots of lovely events in the area which will make use of some of the, currently, empty spaces – unit 7 at Marshall’s Court and the vacant ex-newsagent’s shop – with some fantastic Leeds based creatives including The Blind Club (@theblindclub / http://vimeo.com/theblindclub) and Black Dogs.

You may know Andy Abbott as one of the artists in the Black Dogs Collective who were using space in the Green Sand

Foundry before Bloom Media moved in. Andy will be using Unit 7 which he has renamed The Bungalow for his exhibition ‘A Serious Waste of Time’ from 15th–27th March. In this, his first solo exhibition, Andy presents a selection of videos, photographs, prints and audio pieces born of four ongoing and intertwined projects. The starting point for each project was a hobby, a spare-time activity or simply slacking off. As ever, keep your eyes peeled and we’ll add any more details to our website but you can check out what else the Black Dogs guys are up to here http://www.black-dogs.org or follow them on twitter @BlackDogsLeeds.

IN TOWER WORKS NEWS, the first phase of development started last September and is due to be finished by April. This will stabilise the building around the entrance and provide a clean development platform for future development activity on the site. Yorkshire Forward are waiting for approval to enter into a contract with the European Regional Development Fund

(ERDF) to allow the entrance range building to be fitted out and occupied as managed workspace which will fabulously complement what we have already in Holbeck Urban Village. Watch this space for further updates.

ALSO COMING UP is a new event,The Media Marketplace, to be held at Elland Road on 18th March. This exhibition, conference and networking event is designed to facilitate and build new business partnerships and alliances across Yorkshire’s creative, digital and communications industries – perfect for many of you.
