Landscape LCD EZ-Extender Interfaces

LCD DisplayThe Blackfin Landscape LCD EZ-Extender is shipped with a 3.5 in. land-scape, QVGA (320 x RGB x 240) display with an LCD backlight. All LCD data, touchscreen pins, and power pins connect to the display via a single connector (P1). The 18-bit display operates in 16-bit mode (RGB 5-6-5) and connects to the PPI [15–0] data pins of the processor. The display also uses the serial peripheral interconnect (SPI) port of the processor for control register setup. The LCD display can operate at a VDDIO of 1.6V to 3.6V. This allows you to connect the LCD display to the PPI/SPI interface of the processor gluelessly, without the need for voltage translation circuitry— a great benefit for power-sensitive applications.

The PPI clock of a Blackfin processor and the clock required by the LCD display are driven by the on-board 5 MHz oscillator. By default, the oscil-lator is enabled and drives the PPI interface. You can use the clock generated by the processor or can disable the 5 MHz oscillator by setting the appropriate jumpers on the extender. See “Jumper Settings” on page 2-3 for more information.

At power-up, the LCD backlight circuit is disabled. By default, the shut pin of the LCD display turns the display OFF. Write to the respective con-trol registers to enable the backlight and take the display out of the shut mode. These settings provide significant power savings and are suited for power-sensitive applications.

For more information about the LCD display, go to the Sharp Web site.

An example program demonstrating capabilities of the LCD display is available in the Examples folder of the installation directory.

LCD Touch Controller (AD7879)

1-4 Blackfin Landscape LCD EZ-Extender Manual

LCD Touch Controller (AD7879)The Blackfin Landscape LCD EZ-Extender is shipped with a low-cost resistive touch controller (Analog Devices AD7879). The four pins gener-ated by activating the LCD display (X+, X-, Y+, Y-) connect to a single connector (P1), controlled via the LCD display. You can access the con-troller via the SPI interface of the Blackfin processor. The controller generates an interrupt request for the processor whenever any new data is available or when a user touches the LCD Display. The processor uses the SPI interface to read the appropriate registers of the AD7879 controller. The IRQ line connects the AD7879 controller to the processor via the processor’s general-purpose I/O (GPIO) pin. By default, the AD7879 controller uses the SPI select 1 and GPIO1 pins. “Jumper Settings” on page 2-3 describe how the GPIO and SPI selects can be varied for differ-ent EZ-KIT Lites and EZ-Boards.

For more information about the AD7879 touch controller, go to www.analog.com and search for AD7879.

An example program demonstrating capabilities of the touch controller is available in the Examples folder of the installation directory.

Capacitive Touch Controller (AD7147)The Landscape LCD EZ-Extender is equipped with a CapTouch™ pro-grammable controller (Analog Devices AD7147) for applications implementing push buttons and scroll wheels. The four push button sen-sors and one scroll wheel are located on the top side of the extender’s printed circuit board (PCB).

When the respective sensor is activated, the captouch controller recognizes and communicates the change to the Blackfin processor via the processor’s 2-wire interface (TWI). The AD7147 controller generates an interrupt request for the Blackfin processor whenever any new data is available or

Page 21: Blackfin® Landscape LCD EZ-Extender® Manual · a Blackfin® Landscape LCD EZ-Extender® Manual Revision 1.1, July 2012 Part Number 82-000216-01 Analog Devices, Inc. One Technology

when a user touches the push buttons (PB1—4) or scroll wheel. The push buttons and scroll wheel are copper pads created inside the PCB. Touch the respective push button or traverse around the scroll wheel with a fin-ger to enable the sensor pads and to generate the interrupt request. The IRQ line connects the AD7147 controller to the processor via its GPIO pin. By default, the AD7147 controller uses the SPI select 2 and GPIO2 pins. “Jumper Settings” on page 2-3 describe how the GPIO and SPI selects can be varied for different EZ-KIT Lites and EZ-Boards.

For more information about the AD7147 touch controller, go to www.analog.com and search for AD7147.

An example program demonstrating capabilities of the touch controller is available in the Examples folder of the installation directory.

Serial ROMThe Blackfin Landscape LCD EZ-Extender is equipped with a 2 KB serial ROM device (M24C02) for revision and configuration control: bill of materials and PCB revision information is available by reading the ROM. The part connects to the Blackfin processor via the processor’s TWI inter-face. By default, the serial ROM is read-only to protect the internally stored contents. On the extender, the last three significant TWI address bits are strapped to logic ‘0’ (default). To modify the last three significant TWI address bits, use the provided jumpers; see “Jumper Settings” on page 2-3 for more information.

For more information on the M24C02 device, go to the STMicroelectron-ics Web site.

LCD Touch SPI Chip Select Jumper (JP3)The LCD touch SPICS jumper (JP3) connects the chip select pin of the AD7879 SPI interface (U1) to one of three SPI select pins of the Blackfin processor. JP3 adds flexibility to the extender: you can choose any one of the available SPI select pins (SPISEL1—3) of the processor (see Table 2-3).

By default, JP3 is populated, so that SPISEL2 of the expansion interface II or the PPI stamp connector can be used. When the PPI stamp connector is used to attach the extender, SPISEL3 is unavailable and only SPISEL1 and SPISEL2 are available for JP3.

LCD Reset Jumper (JP5) The LCD reset jumper (JP5) connects the reset pin of the LCD display to one of the following.

• The reset pin of the EZ-KIT Lite/EZ-Board

• A general-purpose I/O (GPIO) pin of the AD7147 capacitive touch controller (U3)

• A GPIO pin connected directly to the Blackfin processor

JP5 adds flexibility to the extender: you can control the LCD display reset by one of three available methods. By default, JP5 is populated so that the EZ-KIT Lite/EZ-Board reset pin connects to the reset pin of the LCD dis-play (P1.28). Consequently, a reset supervisory circuit located on the EZ-KIT Lite/EZ-Board controls the reset pin going to the LCD display (see Table 2-4).

To control the LCD display reset via software, write to the respective AD7147 (U3) control registers using the 2-wire interface (TWI) of the processor and control the AD7147 GPIO pin.

When using the expansion interface II (EZ-Boards), you can also control the LCD display reset via the GPIO4 flag pin. GPIO4 connects directly to the processor and LCD display, and can be controlled without the need to communicate to the AD7147 controller. The GPIO4 pin is unavailable on the PPI stamp connector; as a result, when using a PPI connector, you can not use GPIO4 to control the LCD display reset.

PPICLK Disable Jumper (JP6)The PPICLK disable jumper (JP6) disables and tri-states the buffer (U4) that drives the 5 MHz clock coming from the on-board oscillator (U2). The buffer is powered via the V_Select pin and used for level translation of the 3.3V oscillator to the VDDIO coming from the EZ-KIT Lite/EZ-Board. Use JP6 to disable the buffer if the PPI clock is generated via the Blackfin processor. This tri-states the 5 MHz clock driven by the buffer and pre-vents any signal contention issues. By default, JP6 is not populated, and the 5 MHz clock is driven to the PPI clock line (see Table 2-5).

AD7147 ADDR1 Jumper (JP7)The AD7147 ADDR1 jumper (JP7) changes the second least significant address bit used to interface to the AD7147 capacitive touch controller via the TWI interface of the Blackfin processor. By default, JP7 requires no jumpers. When no jumper is installed, the ADDR1 bit is pulled low and is a logic ‘0’ (see Table 2-6).

Serial ROM Addr Jumper (JP8)The serial ROM address jumper (JP8) can change the three least signifi-cant address bits (ADDR0—3) used to interface to the serial ROM device via the TWI interface of the Blackfin processor. By default, JP8 requires no jumpers. When no jumpers are installed, all three address bits are pulled low and are logic ‘0’. This causes the serial ROM device select (address) to default to a binary 1010 000. To change any one of the three least signifi-cant address bits to a logic ‘1’, install the respective jumper (Table 2-7).

Serial ROM Write Protect Jumper (JP9)The serial ROM write protect jumper (JP9) protects the entire contents of the memory device (M24C02) from inadvertent write operations. By default, JP9 has a jumper installed, making the memory a read-only device. The default setting ensures that any hardware or software revision information stored in the ROM is preserved. Remove JP9 when you need to write to serial ROM (see Table 2-8).

Oscillator Disable Jumper (JP12)The oscillator disable jumper (JP12) disables the 5 MHz oscillator driving the PPI0CLK net and LCD display. The disabled oscillator mode is particu-larly suited for low-power applications.

By default, JP12 requires no jumpers. As a result, the oscillator is driving the 5 MHz clock. You can permanently disable the oscillator by populat-ing a jumper between JP12.2 and JP12.3. The oscillator also can be enabled or disabled via the GPIO pin of the AD7147 capacitive touch controller. To enable or disable the oscillator, write to the respective con-trol registers of the AD7147 controller (U3) and place a jumper between JP12.1 and JP12.2 (see Table 2-11).

LCD Backlight Enable Jumper (JP13)The LCD backlight enable jumper controls the power circuitry for the LCD backlight. The disabled LCD backlight option is particularly suited for low-power applications.

By default, JP13 requires a jumper between JP13.1 and JP13.2. When the EZ-Extender is powered up, the backlight power circuit (VR1) is OFF.

To enable the LCD backlight, use the GPIO (Aux) pin of the AD7879 touch controller (U1). Write to the appropriate control registers of the controller using the SPI interface of the Blackfin processor. You also can control the LCD backlight via the GPIO3 flag pin, which is linked to the Blackfin processor directly. In the latter case, you do not need to
