The Black Racer snake is also known as Coluber Constrictor.
All snakes are reptiles. Reptiles are cold blooded. They have
dry scaly skin. They lay eggs on land. Reptile eggs have soft shells.

Black Racers can grow up to 60 inches long.
They are skinny with large eyes. Their scales are smooth. They may have blue or brown eyes.

They slide on the ground but are also able to climb trees and can swim.
It sheds its skin once a year. It is a color blind animal. Black Racers have a spine.

Black Racers are found in the eastern United States from southern Maine to the Florida Keys.
They are popular in South Carolina and Georgia.
They live in forest edges, old fields and wetland edges.

Black Racers eat insects, rodents, birds, lizards, smaller snakes and amphibians.
They press down and suffocate their prey

Black Racers lay eggs in the spring and early summer months. Eggs hatch in late summer or early fall.
At most, 20 eggs can be laid by each snake.
Racers do not protect or feed their babies. Survival rate is about 40%. Only about 8
babies survive the 1st year of life. They can live up to 10 years in the wild.

Adult Racers can rub its tail against the wood/grass to make it sound like rattle snake for defense.
Young Racers rely on camouflage for protection when they are first born. They are tan and grey with brown and red spots at first.
They wrap around their pray to suffocate them like constrictors.
Racers lie in a kink position to appear like a fallen branch or when it is sleeping.

Racers got their name because they are very fast.
They are also very active during the day time.
It is a nonvenomous snake. It will bite its prey when cornered. Racers prefer flight over fight, but it will
attack its prey Racers are domestic and a violent snake.

Enemies of the Black Racer include: hawks and other birds of prey, bigger mammals, and other larger snakes.
The biggest enemy of Black Racers are humans.
They are common in the Georgia Region and are not protected.
