Perhaps you were driven by instinct, drawn in by a passion that deepened season after season. But somewhere along the way you fell in love. The quiet of the skin track before dawn, the commitment of rapping into a new line, the friendship of partners to whom you trust your life: the backcountry got into your blood. Now, looking back, all the sharp things you remember came from it. Without realizing, you built a life around snow-covered ridges, steep faces and beckoning couloirs—around those moments when you feel most alive.

It’s not just about the turns. Beyond carving on wind-buffed chalk and slashing waist-deep pow, backcountry skiing is a way of living in the mountains, encompassing everything that happens before the skins go on and after the boots come off. It’s training and technique, but also knowledge and judgment.

While it may take a single day to reach a line, it can take a lifetime to learn the skills to ski it—or to know when to turn back. It’s experience built through storm days, bluebird tours and days that start with headlamps and skins and end with beers and a story to tell.

At Black Diamond, we believe our gear can be a catalyst for the global community of backcountry skiers, from tram laps on the Aiguille du Midi in Chamonix to multi-week expeditions in Alaska. It’s this dedication that will continue to fuel our approach to creating Black Diamond gear: using, designing, engineering and building equipment and apparel for those who live to ski.

At Black Diamond, our apparel isn’t merely an emulation of our rich heritage of hardware, it is a natural, organic extension of it—a collection of tools made for climbers and skiers whose passion is intrinsically integrated into every aspect of daily life.

Like our equipment, our apparel is subjected to exhaustive and rigorous testing at both the prototype and production levels, that serves not only to validate its design intentions, but to illuminate and evaluate its performance in the field.

We start by partnering with the industry’s leading material developers, companies who share our passion for innovation and commitment to uncompromising performance. We work tirelessly through the design and construction process, using extensive textile tests—abrasion tests, wash cycles, strength and durability assessments—before arriving at something worthy of real-world use.

Knowing that we can only learn so much from controlled simulations, our testing extends far beyond the walls of our design studio and QA lab. Drawing on the real-world experience of more than 100 active field testers, from SAR team members and mountain guides to pro athletes and local crushers, our Field Testing program is one of the most detailed and extensive in the industry.

Real-time product feedback is transmitted directly from the field to our product development team, which uses it to evolve our apparel with the same alpinist’s mindset that has shaped our hardware—stripping away the superfluous until only the simplest, cleanest and most efficient solutions remain.

As a company with roots in making hardware for climbing and skiing, choosing materials of uncompromising quality has been a priority since day one. Foundational to this commitment, the bluesign system is a holistic certification process that is the cornerstone of our textile supply chain strategy that reduces the environmental impact of our products. The bluesign certification ensures that our production processes achieve maximum resource productivity while assuring environmental protection, worker health and safety, and responsible use of resources.

For Fall 2015, 63% of our apparel pieces feature bluesign-approved fabrics, and more than 80% of them are produced in bluesign system partner facilities. The remaining styles are all made with materials that comply with our strict, internal chemical management program, including many with environmental conscious fibers such as organic cotton and merino wool.

The result is a collection of technical clothing that performs to the highest expectations in the field, and is sourced and built in good style.
