Quality has to be part of the equation

at very birth of each idea.

Quality in the intention,

in the form, the function,

the means and the materials.

Quality can never be an afterthought.

Sustainable development

Since the beginning in 1986, Blå Station has conducted our

business in an environmentally aware manner and in accordance

with the high standards expected for sustainable development.

This means we only use materials of the highest quality, which are

as renewable and recyclable as possible. All our furniture is made

in Sweden which means we can control the production process

from concept to delivery.

Now, more than ever before, there is a focus on how our natural

resources are used and the resulting consequences on our climate

and environment. Our environmental control system is in

accordance with ISO 14001 – which among other things, proves

that we have an environmental policy. It also goes to show we can

continuously and systematically improve our carbon footprint by

targeting specific goals.

To help our clients make an environmentally aware choice, and

to obtain official recognition of our environmental work, we have

chosen to brand sections of our range with the Nordic Swan.

This is only a start, with a handful of products; many more will

follow.

The Swan is the official Nordic Ecolabel, introduced by the

Nordic Council of Ministers.

The Swan represents a non-profit, environmental organisation.

The Swan’s Ecolabel vision is a sustainable society, in which future

generations can benefit from the same conditions and opportunities

as we ourselves do.

The Swan’s environmental requirements cover the entire life cycle of

the product, from raw material to waste management. Even quality

and functional requirements are included. Swan-labelled furniture

have a low impact on the environment and fulfil high criteria on

quality and function. Swan-labelled furniture will last a long time.

That in itself is an advantage for the environment.

Furniture stamped with the Swan logo has been through stringent

tests of durability, strength, safety and stability. The requirements

are particularly high for furniture that will be used in public areas.

The commitment to high quality is complimented by environmental

requirements which span everything from the source of the tree

to a minimal use of varying dangerous chemicals.

The Swan logo places strict requirements on which chemicals are

permitted, in order to protect health and the environment. At the

very least, it contributes to a better working environment during the

manufacturing process.

There are minimal amounts of environmentally dangerous substances

in glue, varnishes and paints. Fabrics and fillings fulfil strict chemical

regulations. Production waste must be stored when furniture filling is

manufactured. Furniture with the Swan label is also constructed

in a way that is easy to recycle.

The Swan logo demonstrates that a product

is a good environmental choice.

A stool is a tool BIMBO started off as a small colourful

sketch on the back of a presentation for another product. We

liked the sketch and Peter Brandt was given the assignment to

further develop his idea – based on his simple drawing of a

small stackable stool, which he later named BIMBO.

It can be used pretty much anywhere one needs a temporary

little place to sit or something to balance a foot on when one

can’t quite reach and, of course, as a movable small table.

SPARTA is something unusual; a comfortable folding chair that functions well – both folded and unfolded.

SPARTA is collapsible and can be opened in both directions. SPARTA is a no compromise chair. When

Börge Lindau designed SPARTA, his objective was to utilise the construction to its maximum. He achieved

this with the remarkable width of just 27mm –when the chair is folded!

A chair by the metre. All progressive development and every innovation

must be born of knowledge. Sting is really an ordinary chair, but manufactured

in an extraordinary way. Sting would never have existed if we’d listened to

the experts – people who knew their materials and industrial processes inside

out. But our wants, wishes and willpower proved irresistibly infectious…and

the impossible became possible. Sting is for indoor and outdoor use and is

1OO% recyclable.

Screwless. Chair 69 is constructed, manufactured and assembled

in a unique design without screws, welding or unnecessary straps

– a problem solved with logic and mathematics. To enable domestic

production of a relatively simple shell chair, we needed to break new

ground without cutting corners or compromising on quality.

Chair 69 is a new shell chair made in a smarter, more cost efficient

and environmentally friendly way.

Sitting democracy – fits like a glove. Many have been given the

assignment to make a comfortable chair, but to complete such a task so that

everybody, whether tall or short, fat or thin, sits just as comfortably is probably

quite unusual. With its small dimensions Boo is welcoming in a generous,

warm way. The sound-absorbent Formfelt is laminated with either a durable

microfibre fabric or leather. BOO is part of a family in which all models are

built with the same materials and technique. BOO is 100% recyclable.

Smallest of rooms. At a time when we’re breaking down

existing barriers to facilitate meetings and shared encounters,

new needs soon arise. The thought of enjoying peace and quiet

after a stressful day. Add to that the thought of how few furniture

products actually help minimise noise and create a temporary

place for relaxation and recovery. One can’t help but conjure up

a small room for reflection and seclusion. Peekaboo is available

both with and without hood.

Thoughtful shapes that meet contemporary needs.

Armchair, desk, chair...Innovation C is the playfully innovative

advance on traditional furniture. Fredrik Mattson has taken the

fundamental elements from several different furniture pieces and

compiled them in a new and beautiful way. Innovation C lets you

work, rest, talk, enjoy coffee...do almost anything – except maybe

sleep! We think tomorrow’s furniture will demand more than just one

obvious function in a stereotypical room. Its not just about compact

living – more like Smart Furniture adaptable to new, everchanging

environments.

Someone’s present, even when no one’s there. Polstergeist is a Danish play on the words “Polster”

which means upholstered furniture and “geist” which means euphoria. The word and shape are related and

Polstergeist emerges from the floor like a spirit.

Sit as you are. The construction is based on how people

in a public environment actually sit and use sofas. The original

design task was exactly that: to observe how people sit and

how sofas are constructed. The result was a connectable easy

chair and a couch with a thick back that one can sit on and a

curvy back that supports both upright and more relaxed seating.

The chameleon. When nearly all sofas and armchairs are covered with

one of the company’s chosen materials, Fellow offers you the opportunity to

choose and cover your armchair or sofa with whatever meets your tastes and

needs. Perhaps a more conservative choice for a business man in a

meeting on Wall Street? Or, why not something colourful for fun loving people

in a hotel lobby? The only limits are your creativity. Be part of the result!

Why waste good wood? It is time for enlightenment.

Trees do not grow on factory floors. We have enlisted

the aid of history, following up leads and ideas all the

way from the tomb of Tutankhamun up and to the late

1800s. Our ambition has been to interpret and analyse

the associations, feelings and sensations that a wooden

chair arouses. Wood is a renewable natural resource

growing right outside our doors. So why not use it? And

use it well… “The Black Chair collection” is more than just

a wooden chair – in whatever colour you prefer.

A round around the round....looking around..... Could be just simple

curiosity, a technical possibility around a round veneer-ring in birch-wood. Later

on, Börge Lindau had difficulty to make up his mind, whether a small round seat

would have three or four legs, or just one, whether a seat must have a back to

lean on, and how...?... with three or four legs...and how high above the sea would

one like to sit, on three or four legs...with a back to lean on or not...?...and other

things....He just could not make up his mind...couldn’t exclude.

So it turned into a little family...OBLADO.

Love and painFredrik and Stefan in an office in southern Stockholm during a warm afternoon in September 2008.

154

Legacy, attitude, passion, inspiration. Problem solving and the production process. These subjects were discussed when two of Sweden’s and Blå Station’s most recognized designers, Stefan Borselius and Fredrik Mattson, meet up and switch on a tape recorder. With backgrounds in furniture carpentry, and friends since their school days, these two rely on each other for advice and are still very good friends. Their first mutual success came quickly.

The sketches of Sting, the multi award-winning chair, had already started during the last year at art school in 2002. Since then they have, independ-ently and together, created many successful products and product families for Blå Station.

SB: Now they want us to discuss again! If one were to put together all the time we have spent talking with Johan and Mimi about production, product development, choice of material, shape, details and so on, it would probably add up to several thousand hours. Not to mention all the time spent in the factory.

FM: At least a few thousand! It would be interesting to add them all up. And it’s probably thanks to the discussions, when we have sometimes totally disagreed, that we have been happiest with the final product. It’s a lot of heart and pain, a small company always feels more inspired than a larger one. Designers at Blå Station also act as product developers, which means that we are part of every step of the process.

SB: Which is extremely educational but also very demanding. I believe the mutual confidence has been very important to think out of the box and dare to make mistakes.

FM: The most important thing is surely to manage the attitude to what one is doing – to think beyond conventional boundaries. And of course we have a responsibility. I could never make a product that doesn’t contribute something or solve the problem that’s been outlined in the brief. I want to give it a clear reason for existing.

SB: One always wants to produce the absolute best. At Blå Station, ambition is always so high and that poses a challenge to really perform, and to give one’s all. It’s probably because of that, that I find it so difficult to put down my tools and say “OK, now I’m finished”. You are,for example, faster at coming up with a shape and moving on to solve the next problem, while I sit for a long time and contemplate. You are the most design savvy person I know!

FM: And you are the person I trust the most in business, you are so confident and raise such good points. You totally trust your intuition and never follow fads and trends. You are in fact the only person I would like to work with, even if you are too stubborn sometimes!

SB: That’s mutual about working together because most of it is based on trust. You and I are both very similar and very different. We have the

same basic concept of what design is – to create something that appeals to many people – interest in material, function and shape. But our approach is different; you are more open and impulsive. Another similarity which really makes our work easier is our background in furniture carpentry. It is easier to understand a problem and quicker to work out how things function from a material perspective.

FM: I just tackle the problem head on. It’s often inspiring. The biggest challenge is to come up with an answer which nobody else has considered until now. The assignments at Blå Station often pose different challenges which can range from space to environment to material, function and production.

SB: Problem solving also acts as inspiration to me, it triggers ideas. I’m not the type, and nor are you, who goes out into the forest, sits on a log, comes home and is super-inspired. In that case I think an urban setting provides so much more. Surely inspiration is more about having an inner library of thoughts, shapes and materials.

FM: Almost everything comes from experience, like a sort of drawing book... Some mornings it’s easier to get to grips with that than others. And right now my library is still closed for the summer. Inspiration and solutions to problems often lie right in front of us, even though they disappear easily under stress and disturbance. It can be about observing something totally normal and then changing it or having an entirely different take on it.

SB: It sounds like an artistic cliché, but the fact is that life in general is a big source of inspiration.

FM: Speaking of inspiration, I find it really inspiring to work for a company that thinks of the environment at every point. The effect of a tiny screw on the environment is as important to Blå Station as that of transportation. To produce everything in Sweden also gives full control over the process, which really should be emphasised more.

SB: Another important issue about the company is that there is always room for news ideas and last minute changes at a late stage before production has started or an exhibition declared open. Spontaneity is really important!

FM: Yes, it isn’t like that at many other companies where the manage-ment or some shareholders have to go over, compromise and approve everything. I am convinced that a short route to making decisions, quick resolutions and spontaneity often yields better results.

SB: Absolutely. We are privileged and it is fulfilling to be able to work with something which is such fun together with people we like. The only thing I sometimes find difficult is to have to express myself in words, both in interviews and for various marketing publications. It was partly to avoid the use of words that I chose the profession.

FM: You’re right, there isn’t really that much to talk about.

Börge Lindau was born into the trade - following a family tradition if you like. His father was a cabinetmaker with a furniture shop in the small town of Ahus on the south-east coast of Sweden. He was also the pastor of a Christian congregation. Börge had three sisters and was both the only boy and the youngest child. So you are right in your assumption; He was spoilt!

Against his father’s wishes, Börge applied to study furniture and furnishings at the Higher College of Applied Art in Göteborg. It was here that he met fellow student Bo Lindekrantz, with whom he was ultimately to form a design partnership destined to last many decades. Having worked for other people for some time, the two later joined forces to open their own office in Helsingborg.

In 1965 Lammhults Mekaniska, which manufactured simple steel furniture, approached Lindau & Lindekrantz to review the company’s output. The two designers proposed a radical new range: thick steel tubes bent into expressive designs with lacquer and upholstery in bold new colours. While the 1930s heritage was clear, its manifestation was brand new. Lammhults decided to go ahead with the new range, which soon brought international acclaim for the company and unprecedented success for the two Swedish designers. Lindau & Lindekrantz furniture often drew inspiration from the past, but was famous for its innovative technology and fluid design. L&L continued to work with Lammhults and other design companies for many, many years.

In the beginning of the 80’s the designers separated. Börge Lindau moved back to his hometown of Åhus. During the 1980s Börge played a lot of golf – too much in fact – and finally came to the conclusion that he could make better use of his time. But the motivation for designing yet another chair was no longer really there. There were so many good chairs already. For a while he thought about opening a fish restaurant. His wife Karin had visions of herself standing gutting fish for the rest of her life, but Börge thought his idea was marvellous.

1984 proved to be a turning point. He, along with Bo Lindekrantz, was awarded the Forsnäs Prize together for the best design in compression-moulded furniture. The prize was 30,000 Swedish kronor and a perforated veneer seat in a gold frame. ‘I suppose I ought to make a chair for this seat,’ Börge said in his brief acceptance speech. The motivation had re-turned and slowly the old machinery began to grind into action once more. In the end, it wasn’t just one chair – and it wasn’t just chairs, it became a family of furniture, OBLADO and in 1986 the family business Blå Station was founded.

In the beginning the basic idea was a single, simple design concept; rings of compression moulded birch veneer would provide the basis for a rich and varied collection of stools, chairs and tables. As a furniture producer, the designer Börge Lindau suddenly found that he had the freedom to choose for himself – and almost immediately he established the most stringent of criteria for what became the OBLADO range. The components were all produced in the most environmentally friendly way possible and the cornerstones were light Finnish birch, stainless steel and vegetable-tanned leather.

As an architect, Börge Lindau’s working methods were more akin to those of a stage designer or, rather, a choreographer, since his furniture always features an element of movement – movement derived from the manufactur-ing process’s bending and stretching or from the tension of the material. Movement which is consciously brought to the fore. Movement which attracts attention and captures the imagination in much the same way as if something had just happened in the room. A room inhabited not by people, but by sculptural forms, each set against yet working with the other.

Börge was a man of considerable presence who had a strong sense of the theatrical and an awareness of the importance of making an entrance. His work on the periphery of other professions was probably the reason why he found it so easy to work with people from a variety of spheres. He had a great deal of respect for skills and knowledge; he listened carefully and drew inspiration from anything that he could use in his own work. The concept of the room was extremely important to Börge. He was always aware of its limitations and possibilities – he saw it as part of his job.

His relationship with his god echoed his approach to his work. He once said: ‘The room is god. It is only in the shaping of a room that we can recreate the concept of god. A holy room is not an image of god, but it’s close!’

– Designing for the future? Try with all your might and consciousness to find designs that are valid TODAY.

Good design isn’t just about what a product looks like. It’s also about how we change and improve them – now and in the future

Giving shape to “a chair” is much like searching for the right word when you have something important to say. Most words have already been used, and not just once, but once too often. So you search for a form, for words genuinely capable of expressing something not-yet-seen, something not-yet-said. And you know how difficult that can be! Seen in a new context however, one tiny detail is all you need to be able to formulate that “new chair”.

– Don’t design for others what you would not use yourself

158

Page 161: Blå Station SOULution 2009

– Design is not “doing things” or “creating” or “self-realisation” it is endless searching, and if you are lucky to find a “useful piece” remember you FOUND it…you did not create it.

-As Börge himself said, “An idea is never better than its result.”

Materials, construction, function and their products, now and in the future, are what drive Blå Station. Curiosity is the motor and the fuel, the will to change and improve is the objective.

-To Be and To Do… ToBeDo!

To seek the key to Swedish design is to seek in vain. There are neither criteria nor colour codes. Simply a feeling, floating in the back of your mind like the mood of a traditional painting.

Product information should not be a threat to consumption, but a way to make the right choices.

How long is NOW?When is then? How far away is the future? The future is tomorrowThe future is already hereNow is the future of yesterdayThe future isn’t far away.

The best way to predict the future is to design it

International design? There’s no such thing. Just design with international appeal.
