    Dear Readers,

Welcome to BKPA’s third annual Kali Puja! I hope all of you are enjoying the festivities. Two years ago, we held our first Kali Puja, a day spent with family and friends, filled with fun. It takes such impressive amounts of teamwork, leadership, and energy to put together this event and the many others that the organization holds throughout the year. These cultural events are not just one of the core aspects of BKPA; they also shape our unique experience of East-West cross-cultural understanding.

Back when I was in third grade, my family attended our first BKPA event, Saraswati Puja. With the blessings of the Goddess of Learning, we began attending Bangla class. Immediately, I found a connection with all these kids who spoke Bangla just like me. It was exciting to learn more of the Bengali language and to understand more about the culture as a whole. Most importantly, I felt extremely proud to have a place where I could learn and share my Bangla heritage outside of my house.

As the years went by, BKPA became less of a Bangla class and more of an extended family. I realize now how lucky I am to celebrate Noboborsho, Rabindra Jayanti, and Kali Puja with the same group of people who spend Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas with me — allowing me to celebrate both sides of my cultural identity. Even on a day to day basis, I am so proud and thankful that I am able to understand, speak, read, and write both English and Bangla. I can easily communicate with my grandparents and other relatives, and I can learn and understand any catchy Bangla song on my own.

My experience really reflects on the organization as a whole — BKPA is a group brought together by cultural pride and guided by the passionate leadership of Meena-mashi and Anup-mesho. From the moment I joined, I felt that BKPA was unique because I was not just learning the Bangla language, I was also forming a new understanding of myself, my family, and my culture. Under the nurturing guid-ance of all the Mashis and Meshos, who generously volunteer their time, we learn how to read, write, recite, sing, and dance. Most importantly, we learn how to be proud of the Bengali heritage that we keep alive despite being almost 8,000 miles away from Bengal.

    Best Regards,

    Mitali Chowdhury

BKPA Executive Team Member & Previous Co-President

    Dear BKPA Families and Friends,

We welcome you to the Bengali Kids of Princeton Area’s third annual Kali Puja. BKPA gives kids an opportunity to learn about the Bengali language and culture in a fun way.

As Kali Puja is our biggest annual event, we would like to take a moment to reflect on the organization’s progress. Starting off in the beginning of 2018, Saraswati puja on January 27th at Durga Mandir was a grand success. During the summer, we organ-ized a summer camp and had lots of fun. Unfortunately, due to inclement weather we had to cancel our summer picnic. We know many kids were looking forward to the picnic, but we will make it up with our upcoming holiday event. Throughout the year, including the summer, we had weekly Bengali Heritage Class (BHC) at the Plains-boro Recreation and Community center. The weekly BHC classes gives members the opportunity to learn how to read, write, and speak Bangla. Moreover, the weekly class gives us a consistent, specified time to come together with our friends to learn songs, dances, and plan upcoming events and community work.

Three years ago, Kali Puja started as a small event but has grown to be our main event, and therefore, an extra special occasion to look forward to. This year’s puja theme is “Kolkata and Kalighat”. We hope you enjoy all the effort that has been put forward to organize this puja and cultural show—our favorite part is always the fire-works! We would also like to extend our gratitude for enjoying Kali Puja with us, whether it is your first time or you have been here since the first one!

As always, BKPA members would like to thank our BHC teachers, parents, and volunteers for giving us a platform to express ourselves and learn about our heritage. We are so proud to be part of the BKPA family and it has been an honor to be your presidents.

    Sincerely,

Our family has been moving since I was little. I was born in Boston, Massa-chusetts, but we hardly stayed there. It was like, we stayed in one place one or two years, (if we were lucky, maybe two and a half) then one day, out of the blue, we would get a call from my dad that we had to pack up our things and move. Whenever I heard this, wherever I was, this news always shattered my heart into a million pieces. I quite vividly remember the last few times that I moved. One particular place that we frequently went and came back from was Kolkata. I have so many memories there that even I can’t keep count of all of them! The last time we visited was in January, for my Aunt’s wed-ding. I call her Sweetheart (I don’t know why, the name just stuck since I was little), and she calls me that back. Anyhow, it was really fun. The night before we left, I was so sad! I didn’t want to leave India at all. Both my mom’s parents and my dad’s parents live in Uttarpara, so we don’t have to travel a million miles to

get to each other’s houses. Anyways, I’m gonna change the topic now. My most fond memories of visiting Kolkata…..hmmm, let’s see. One thing my

family loves doing is eating egg rolls. I remember one day my mom, aunt, and I went on a busy night to a roll shop. Mmmm, it tasted like heaven! One specific place we went to eat rolls was Bedwin. Gods, it is good! (Definitely try it) Another memory I have is City Center 2. It is a huge mall in Salt Lake City. There are so many high-quality shops there! It’s one of my favorite malls ever. So, I

know I said I have a lot of memories of Kolkata, so I can’t list ALL of them, but I have one more for you. The last memory I will share is Rajarhat. It’s where I lived before I came here from 2014-2015. That is a good place. I loved it there. My friends were the best, and our parents were even better friends. I went to a good school, and everything was perfect. Until we moved again, back to the USA was devastated. However, I like my life here as well. But it’s not too bad over at Kolkata at all. Not at all.

By Anisha DasA couple of years back I took a trip to Kolkata with my family. I have visited the city before – but I was too young to remember the details. Just the thought that I would be going to Kol-kata brought in lots of anxi-ety in my mind. I had some pre-conceived ideas but was pleasantly taken aback by modern Kolkata.

I saw Malls, numerous hotels, flyovers in Kolkata. The malls also had arcade and bowling allies where I spent time with my friends. The best part of it was the food court – which offered different varieties of mouth-watering foods. In addition – there were KFC and Mc-Donalds chain that were serving Indian varieties of food.

I saw people dressed up just like me, as a matter of fact I found only in suburbs & villages ladies wearing saree & salwar. I was totally fascinated by Dakshine-swar Kali Temple, Belur Maath on the bank of river Ganga and the Victoria Me-morial. I also spend a day at Nicco Park & Science city. My favorite place was the Poush Mela in

Shantiniketan though. I went with my Aunt and Mom and it reminded me of 4th of July Carnival back home in US because of the variety of rides, prizes, etc. There were many booths filled with clay & ceramic sculptures and hand-craft-ed garments, leather ware & colorful jewelry and booths selling pickles, mouthwatering sweets. There was Baul musicians, local folk dancers who made the evenings splen-did.

Besides sightseeing there have been many fond memories created while spending time in Kolkata. Some of the best parts were visiting family and touring fun places. I saw

some of the best Christmas lighting in the central city of Park Circus and Esplanade area and in the malls.

Visiting my family was a wonderful experience for me because I got to meet relatives from both sides of parents. I have experi-enced the best hospitality I could ever imagine. I met my Aunt and cousins for the first time; they came from Australia to see us. I got to do many things I had never done before, such as ride on a motorcycle, riding a Toto (3 wheeler) and get driven around by a chauf-feur. It was a memorable experience to connect myself to my heritage and my family. I would love to go back and visit Kolkata again.

By Ayan DasLast year I visited Aruba, a Dutch Caribbean island in South America. I have spent time in the most beautiful beach with white sand and deep blue waters. But the most memorable day was when my dad took us for a submarine ride.

We got tickets on-line and then took a cab to down-town Aruba. There we had to wait till our boarding time. A boat took us to the submarine. I had the chance to view the beauti-ful shore lines from the edge of the boat.

Soon the sub-marine was in sight floating in the middle of the sea. It looked like something from a movie – but was much smaller in size. We lined up to board the sub-marine. I also shook hands with the captain.

We got inside the sub through a small stair. There were port holes from where we would be able to see outside. After everyone was boarded – the subma-rine started to go down. There was a digital scale which was showing how far we were going under water.

At some point – we actually landed on the sea-bed.

The sea bottom was full of beautiful coral and numer-ous fishes going in and around them. The sub was going around an area. We also saw couple of ships under water. One of them was actual ship-wreck and the other one was put down for display purpose.

After 30 minutes – the sub started to go up. We took plenty of pictures of the sea-life. My only regret is I was looking for a shark and could not find one.

After the submarine ride – we came back to shore in the same boat. My mom got some souvenir, so we

remember our journey and we came back to the hotel. That concluded the most memorable day of my life when I fulfilled my dream to ride in a submarine.

My Trip to Hong Kong Disneyland

    By Arush Kundu

I have always dreamed of going to Disneyland, so I was very excited when my father told me that we were going on a vacation to Hong Kong Disneyland. I was so excited I felt like doing 20 jumping jacks that day. So I waited and waited until the day came. When the day had come we reached Hong

Kong at night. Then the next morning, my dad had lots of work so I watched television. Then the next morning my family went to Disneyland. When we reached Disney-land, first my dad bought me some caps. Then we started walking and walking. My family and I went on lots of rides, and then we went to the castle. We also went to a toy shop. At night, we watched the fireworks. I was so happy that I had a fantas-tic adventure that I would have done 50 laps around my school gym.

    Founder’s DayBy Krittika Dutta

“Hooray!” We are celebrating Plainsboro’s birthday. But did you ever wonder who made Plains-boro? I wish I was one of the per-sons to make Plainsboro.

Celebrating Founder’s Day is awesome especially when BKPA gets to perform dances and audi-ence applause.

At the end, we get to play on the rides and collect lot of toys.
