replacementshower solutions

The replacement marketcurrently accounts for

around 64 percent of the1.3 million electric

showers sold every year. These statistics coupled

with the “don’t move, improve” ethos recently

adopted by home ownerssignals that the market

will be even stronger in 2012, signalling a

great opportunity forbathroom retailers, says

Lorna Fellowes, MD Triton Showers.

When replacing an electric shower, adjustments to the existing connections and pipework

need to be considered as they could increase installation time and cause complications.

In addition, the footprint of the existing shower and the potential damage to existing

tiles and décor need to be taken into account. Due to the increase in demand for replacement

electric showers, customers are seeking showering solutions with the ability to solve any problems

that may be encountered and that reduce the need to refurbish the bathroom walls.

“In response to these new demands and to solve issues associated with replacement, Triton has

boosted its best selling T80 electric shower range with the introduction of the new T80Z Fast-Fit –

the ultimate replacement shower. The T80Z has the ability to solve almost every connection

problem for any replacement or new installation, ensures a speedy fit and a neat finish every time –

even when replacing competitor models – giving you confidence to offer the product as the

ultimate solution for any electric shower replacement.

“Electrical issues when replacing a shower can be tackled easily with Triton’s revolutionary new

Swing-Fit™ terminal block, which makes the T80Z Fast-Fit shower simple to wire regardless of cable

positioning. Installation flexibility is further extended by Triton’s unique 180o fully reversible Swivel-

Fit™ water inlet that provides more entry points than any other electric shower on the market.”

Available in popular Chrome and White in 7.5kW to 10.5kW models, the T80Z Fast-Fit will suit

any style and power requirements, plus an 8.5kW white Eco model will help the homeowner to cut

water usage. Recessed controls, power on illumination and a low water pressure indicator offer

added appeal for the end user, while the size and shape of the unit also means it can be positioned

neatly over existing holes, ensuring an attractive finish every time. The T80Z Fast-Fit is available with

a five year guarantee and is covered by Triton's rapid replenishment service if parts are ordered

Moving into new product areas means that Montrose can provide dealers with one of

the most comprehensive bathroom furniture ranges available. Managing Director

David Marchant says that the Montrose range offers an opportunity to secure new

business: “New products create interest and excitement for the end consumer, the dealer and

ourselves. New displays are an important progression in any quality showroom. They quickly

become a focal point, consumers love to see new items and sales staff love having something

fresh and new to show them. While it is tempting to cut investment in this area in these difficult

trading times, this caution must be balanced with the need to stimulate potential interest and

ultimately sales.”

Montrose are really excited about the potential for dealers in the new product launches.

Curved units change the dynamics of a room, the textured finish provides a touch sensation and

the new gloss finishes keep the range fresh. All of the new products are shown in a brand new

brochure and give dealers a fantastic start to 2012. There’s more to come this year from

Montrose, giving dealers even more opportunities.

Products from Impulse Bathrooms first appeared on the UK market

around 16 years ago and ever since has had to contend with the

misconception that its Chinese manufacturing base automatically

meant that the goods were of lower quality. “Nothing has been further

from the truth as the company has always been managed by expatriate

managers in a British management style and structure and made its

products to British Standards – even having UK based CICS carry out

the annual ISO9001:2008 Quality Assurance reviews for ISO

accreditation,” says Gary Hawkins, Impulse Bathrooms General Manager

in the UK.

In a major development for the British bathroom industry, this is all

changing and Impulse Bathrooms ceramic products will be

manufactured in Britain. Reversing the recent trend of industry to shut

the doors on UK manufacture and move production to the Far East ,

Impulse Bathrooms sister company Ours Sanitary Ware recently

acquired the long established former Ideal Standard works in

Middlewich – including the ceramic plant and equipment.

Bathroom group Managing Director Jan Klomp explains the

rationale behind the acquisition of the UK facilities. “Local for local is the

principle,” he says. “The UK factory will be making all Impulse

Bathrooms products in a matter of weeks. We will also be producing at

Middlewich to meet the needs for our products from Europe and

America. The Chinese factory will continue but will supply the local

market in China, Australia and the Pacific rim. We have conducted in-

depth analyses of production, transport and fuel costs and proved

beyond any doubt that Middlewich manufacture for the UK is equally

economical. There is no cost benefit anymore in producing and

shipping from far distant countries. The Middlewich plant certainly has

the ability and experience to produce the more difficult designs which

we will be developing to meet new style requirements for the UK

consumer.”

Since this acquisition, Ours Sanitary Ware has recruited a

considerable number of the previous management team and many of

the highly skilled casters and ceramics operatives. In addition, other

skilled labour has become available as a result of the cessation of

production at Twyfords Alsager site.

Names the industry knows well and respects have joined the

Ours team including stalwarts Brian Standbridge, David Leadley and

Brian Keeley.

For Impulse Bathrooms this means easier communications, speedier

deliveries, greater flexibility and rapid response. “Stockholding has been

built up in the UK in order to try to ensure a seamless changeover. Trials

of the majority of Impulse Bathrooms products have been completed

and have gone completely to plan and the remainder are ongoing,”

adds Gary Hawkins. “We are very confident of a smooth transition

which customers simply will not feel. What we can also be equally

certain about is that our customer service ethos will be maintained and

even improved as we now have the support of a locally based

manufacturing and service operation – well proven for its quality and

attentiveness.”

According to the latest report from AMA, the total market for shower equipment is valued

at £438 million at manufacturers selling prices in 2011. This represents a moderate

increase when compared to the market size in 2010 and reflects the continuing fragility

of the UK economy. Forecasts indicate that the UK shower equipment market will return to

modest growth in 2012-13 as consumer confidence and housebuilding levels gradually improve

– although this does depend on the situation in Europe and on employment figures here in the

UK. By 2015, the overall market value is forecast to be £500 million at MSP, which would

represent an increase of around 14 percent compared to the estimated market size in 2011.

Despite the recent economic downturn, many sectors of the market are demonstrating

product innovation, reflecting new development opportunities from the increasing impact of

water and energy efficiency legislation.

Showering in the UK is approaching market saturation as around 86 percent of all UK

households now have some sort of shower installation. As this market matures, there are greater

levels of replacement purchases with many products designed specifically for retrofit purposes.

Product developments and improvements have focused on quality and design with a trend

towards higher value products and contemporary, minimalist styles. Consumers are trading up,

seeing a separate enclosure as more desirable than a shower over the bath and are more aware

of products such as walk in showers and wetrooms.

Shower controls account for the greatest proportion of the market with 45 percent of the

overall shower equipment market. Enclosures, screens and trays have grown their share of the

market in recent years and now account for only a fraction less than the shower controls sector

at 44 percent. Shower accessories account for the remaining 11 percent.

Many shower products are now designed specifically for retrofit purposes – there has been

21-25 - Showers 2/2/12 10:13 am Page 1

22 • BATHROOM JOURNAL FEBRUARY 2012

big interest in enclosures with the same size footprint as a bath from older consumers. Sales of

replacement shower accessories such as hoses and handsets are also increasing year on year.

With the UK economic downturn, shower products installed in new housing has declined

significantly in the last two to three years. This has particularly impacted on mixer control sales.

With the downturn in the housing market, householders have been seen to ‘improve don’t

move’. Rather than going to the expense of extending their property, they are making the best

use of existing space and are undertaking improvements such as minimalist bathroom

refurbishments and the replacement of baths with wetroom areas.

The downturn in the UK economy has led to an increasing number of lower priced ‘entry

level’ showers such as utility or contract mixers. Electric showers have also gained share during

the downturn as they are perceived as relatively cheap to run and install as stored hot water is

not required.

The number of showers installed in new houses will start to increase with some recovery in

private housing starts evident as the UK economy stabilises. However, key factors such as

mortgage availability and high deposit requirements are likely to continue to impact on the rate

of recovery in the short term. Housing starts in the public sector are expected to decline as

spending cuts and the removal of regional housebuilding targets impacts on social housing

construction levels.

According to AMA the shower equipment market will continue to fragment and the

number of own label products is likely to increase. Cheaper products sourced from abroad will

continue to put pressure on prices. Manufacturers will need to increase brand recognition and

create greater product differential by investing in more distinctive ‘added value’ designs.

Manufacturers are reacting to the market in two ways – either by going upmarket where

there is still money or by introducing what the fashion trade calls a diffusion range – a big name

LOOK FOR THE LABELHere in the UK installers face the difficulty of dealing

with many different water systems, thanks to our

inheritance of traditional low pressure combined

with the growing number of unvented and combi

boiler systems. It all makes choosing the right

shower a minefield as what suits one system will not

always perform satisfactorily on another. A hand

shower developed for low pressure can use a lot of

water at high pressure while one developed for high

pressure may not work correctly at low pressure.

Croydex recognised this during the

development of many of its latest hand showers and decided to

introduce products that perform well at both high and low pressures. In

addition the company has also developed products that can reduce

water consumption by up to 50 percent but still offer good

performance. Several Croydex hand sets are included in the BMA Water

Efficient Product Labelling Scheme.

The BMA scheme provides easy access to a database of water and

energy saving bathroom products. Seven Croydex shower handsets are

included in it. Each of the handsets included in the database features the

Croydex Eco function, a simple to fit device that is inserted into the

handset or showerhead during installation and can be removed as

required. It can be used in conjunction with most systems, including

electric showers. Croydex handsets included in the Water Efficient

Product Labelling Scheme include the Contour Maxi Single and Four

Function, Profile Maxi Three and Four Function, Profile Medio Four

Function, Solo Single Function and Tech Three Function.

Croydex Product Director Peter Pegden says that manufacturers

must do their best to make sure products are available to fulfil the latest

sustainability and water saving requirements. “To have the official

approval of the WELP scheme on so many of our showering products is

testament to the hard work we have put in at Croydex to ensure our

products are as water efficient as possible without reducing the

showering sensation.”

brand at a lower price. Showerlux has done this with the Legacy range – as MD Bob Bowler

explains: “Moving forwards, the plan is to introduce a series of new products that are set to

invigorate the company’s market leading range of shower enclosures and excite the market. The

Legacy range gives our customers a high quality product at a more competitive price.”

Available in styles and sizes to suit every bathroom, Legacy includes quadrants and offsets,

pivot doors, wide access bi fold and slider doors, 8mm glass wetroom panels and bath screens.

Products are easy to install and maintain. External installation means that there is no need to

step on the tray when fitting the enclosure. Click out lower wheels with stainless steel bearings

make cleaning easy. The range is made using 6mm toughened glass and all products feature

GlassShield and have a ten year guarantee.

Wet room panels that can be installed either straight to the floor or used with a tray have

been popular at the top end of the market – as Julian Pearson, Commercial Director at Roman

confirms. “Minimalism is important at the top end of the market. Many of our customers want

products where only the glass is visible and the metal profiles have been completely eliminated

but installing a sheet of glass with no profiles is just not an option in many properties because

the walls need to be perfectly vertical. That is why we have engineered a new profile that can be

recessed into the wall so it appears that there is no framing. It was important for us to offer

something as near frameless as possible for when all that is required is a quick retro fit so to suit

this the exposed version of the profile was created."

Easy installation has been a driver for the shower market in the UK. By far the biggest reason

for call backs is poor installation so manufacturers have gone out of their way to make fitting as

easy and as foolproof as possible and are also offering training courses. Wet floors can be

particularly tricky – if this is your interest it is worth knowing that Impey offers a very good one

day training course that covers all aspects of installation.

Mira’s Sport electric shower range has

been a big success ever since it was

launched, accounting for one in

eight of all electric showers sold in the UK and

with total sales of over two million. Mira is

now building on that success with the launch

of a new generation of Sport electric showers.

There are four new products in the new

Sport collection. These are the entry level

Sport; Sport Thermostatic; Sport Multi-fit™

and Sport Max. All four new products have a

slimline design with quality chrome detailing

and new fittings such as a larger 110mm

shower head with unique spray patterns.

There is a choice of 7.5kW, 9.0kW, 9.8kW and

10.8kW power options.

Mira has an impressive research and

development budget, which is reflected in

brand new features, added to the Multi-fit™

and Max models. If there was ever a case for

saying an installer needs just one product on

the van, Multi-fit™ is it. Mira says that Multi-

fit™ can be used to retrofit more showers

than any other easy fit product on the market.

It reduces installation complexity and makes it

easier for customers to upgrade. The Sport

Multi-fit™ caters for electrical and water

connections from the left or right which can

be either rising, falling or rear feed. It has

adjustable fittings within a larger footprint

designed to cover screw holes from previous

installations, so is an ideal replacement for 99

percent of all electric showers from Mira itself

and many other suppliers.

The Sport Max has all the benefits

common to the rest of the range but also

includes Airboost™ technology. This increases

the size of water droplets to give the feeling

of a better and more powerful flow – without

actually using any more water. Airboost™

works by pumping air into the water – a

clever way to make water wetter without

using more.

All of the showers in the collection feature

new fittings, which enhance user perception

of performance. Research has shown that

shower users believe that performance comes

from the head so size and style are critical. All

products in the new range feature a 110mm

diameter spray face with spray effects that

include Rain, Rain+, Burst and Storm. To assist

the fitter there are variable screw fixing

centres that reduce fitting time by using

existing screw holes or matching grout lines.

Height adjustment is an easy one handed

operation controlled by a joystick.

This new generation of Sport electric

showers also features tried and tested Mira

Clearscale™, Sensi-Flo™ and Opti-Flo™

technologies. The Clearscale™ heating

element system can reduce limescale by

around 50 percent compared to ordinary

shower heaters. As limescale is a problem for

about 60 percent of UK homes, this is well

worth considering. Sensi-Flo™ provides

added user protection by preventing unsafe

hot water discharge in the event of a

significant loss of cold water pressure.

Opti-Flo™ is Mira’s patented flow control

technology. This provides best in class flow

performance all the year round, even on hot

summer days when some electric showers

have to run at a lower flow rate to achieve a

comfortable showering temperature. Phased

shutdown reduces limescale and enhances

safety while pressure stabilised temperature

control ensures predictable and consistent

showering time after time.

Mira is supporting stockists and installers

with an eye catching integrated marketing

campaign that represents a £1.75 million

investment in driving both the Sport product

and general brand awareness to the

customer.
