Dear Friends

The latest date on which Easter can ever fall for the west-ern church is on April 25th. Since the eastern church uses a different calendar, the date on which they celebrate Easter can be quite different and even later. However late Easter is this year (April 24th by the way) perhaps it will be late enough that we finally experience some real spring weather with it. We can only wait and see.

Since Easter is so late this year, the only Sunday of Easter during the month of April will be Easter Sunday itself. All of May, and even some of June, will have Easter obser-vances. This means that Pentecost is also very late since its date is tied directly to Easter. During all this time we (hopefully) will experience the way spring season brings im-ages of the new life we hear promised in the Easter procla-mation, “Christ is Risen!”

But the whole world does not necessarily experience that synchronicity. While we in the northern hemisphere revel in the warmer days that come, in the southern hemisphere the exact opposite occurs. Easter is the harbinger of fall and winter for them. Perhaps we Christians might reflect on that set of circumstances. For many, Christianity only appears attractive if our immediate circumstances improve, well, im-mediately. But no such image is portrayed in scripture. We know that Paul, and many others, suffered much as they clung in hope to the promises of real life in Christ and mean-while found ways to provide aid to others. Nothing magically happened to them that made them instantly wealthy or pow-erful in the eyes of the world.

That does not mean that nothing changed. For Paul, other early Christians, and for us, the gospel offers the promise of a completely new life in Christ and the ability to see others in need, not just experience a change in circumstances for our-selves.

Continued …

Indeed, it allows, even encourages us to see and help others who are threatened. I think now especially of those affected by the earthquake and tsunami in Ja-pan. As you find the capacity and desire to live now the life promised in Christ I encourage you aid those suffering in any way you may.

May the light of Christ fill your life,

Just before 5 pm local time in Japan on March 11, 2011, the largest earthquake ever to hit Japan with a magnitude of 8.9 struck. QUESTION: How many Lutherans does it take to change a

light bulb?

ANSWER: ONE

… plus a very large scaffold! Many thanks to Rich Weigel for changing the bulbs on that ex-tremely high Chancel ceiling! With Doug and Pat Thunder standing guard, the job was well done and things look a little brighter indeed! Thanks again!!

I think I must belong to the most car-ing church family in the world! Thank you all for your cards, prayers, words of sympathy, hugs and other acts of kindness and support. As Carris would say, “Your picture is definitely on God’s refrigerator!”

Due to illnesses, injuries, surgeries, and out of area traveling, the Bell Choir is cutting their musical season a little short. We plan on playing 4/10 and 4/24 (Easter) at the 10:30 service. Then, God willing, we will resume in September, 2011. If you want to learn how to

play, I am available throughout the year. Even though we ring to praise God, it means a great deal to us when peo-ple comment, compliment and encourage our musical offering. Thank you for your continued support.

NOTE: Through the marvelous tool of Google, I discov-ered the following: April 24 has not been Easter Sunday in the 135 years since 1875 -- the next time will be in 2095. I doubt that many of us will be around then!

have a killer jigsaw puzzle and I can’t figure

out how to get started.” Her neighbor asks,

“What is it supposed to be when it’s fin-

Her neighbor decides to go over and help with the puzzle.

She lets him in and shows him where she has the puzzle

spread all over the table. He studies the pieces for a mo-

ment, looks at the box, then turns to her and says, “First of

all, no matter what we do we’re not going to be able to assem-

ble these pieces into anything resembling a rooster.”

He takes her hand and says, “Secondly, I want you to relax.

Let’s have a nice cup of tea, and then,” he said with a deep

sigh ….

“Now, let’s put all the Corn Flakes back in the box!”

WELCA is gearing up for our big an-nual event, the Rummage Sale! It will be here before we know it so please

mark your calendars for Saturday, April 30. We will be starting to take donations of any goodies you have after Easter Sunday, April 24. (St. Paul’s Congregational Council meets on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 7 PM)

COUNCIL PRESIDENT’S CORNER

Tom Snodgrass, 2011 Council President Email: [email protected]

It is the start of the Easter season, a time of reflection for all Christians, no matter what denomination we choose to call our own. For Paul who was writing to the Christian congregations in Rome his blessing addressed their doubt, our doubt, when he wrote “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in your believing; so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

I would like to share with you three things from Council in this brief note … three things that are minor in nature to some, but abound in hope for the health of our Lutheran Family. The first, and a major reason to celebrate, is that The Rever-end Mark W. Holmerud, the Bishop of Sierra Pacific Synod, will be taking the pulpit to tell the story of Evangelical Lu-theran Church in America on Sunday, July 10th of this year. This is a real complement to St. Paul’s Lutheran Family. The Bishop is a good guy, a dynamic speaker, a committed Christian and one of the architects the ELCA. For those of us who have had doubts here in Carson City about the ELCA I promise you will come away with a new and positive atti-tude concerning our Synod.

The second concerns the activity of a few good men, headed by Bill Massie and Don Kovisto, in the organizing and pro-motion of the first Men’s Organization in a significant amount of time. The plan is to be primarily a service organization, dedicated to our church family and our community. The Organization’s first project is April 9th, breakfast followed by a clean up of the back yard, so that we will know when we have our Easter Egg Hunt, two weeks later, it will be clean and safe for our little people. The second project is being put together and all we need at this point is a date. We are spon-soring and have invited Abduhl Barghouti, Imam at the Islamic Center in Reno, to come and speak at St. Paul’s. Mr. Barghouti has spoken at St. Paul’s before and brings a story of peace and love. In these days of fear, intolerance and violence, all people of good will need to stand together. We take pride in welcoming him to our church. Christ said “love your neighbors.” Mr. Barghouti and his family are our neighbors.

The third thing that abounds in Peace and Hope in Believing belongs to an individual who, along with Council, was chal-lenged by a breakdown of a product that threatened the security of our church. There is no money in the budget to cover this cost. The cost was large to replace this product and without hesitation a check was written to cover this year’s ex-pense. I will not give the name of the donor because I have not asked if it would be alright. All I will say is Thank You and God Bless.

We have a wonderful, caring congregation; get involved!

Till next month, Tom

St. Paul’s newly formed Men’s Group is sponsoring a Church Property Clean-Up Day on Saturday, April 9, 2011. This will be starting with a scrambled egg, pancake, sausage and bacon breakfast at 8:00 am. This event is

open to EVERYONE in the church. Bring your work clothes, gloves, rags, trash bags, pruning shears, limb saws, assorted screwdrivers and wrenches. There’s something for EVERYONE.

SUNDAY SCHOOL

The Sunday School has been busy learning about the disciples in this past month, spending some time on the story of Thomas and the other events leading up to Jesus’ crucifixion. In April, the

children will be experiencing the foot washing that took place at the Last Supper along with other meaningful ex-periences regarding Jesus’ last days. The children are also learning some new songs with the help of Miss Vicki and as always, doing crafts which they seem to like the best (outside of snack time.) There will be NO classes held on Easter Sunday, April 24.

Towards the middle of May we will be visiting the Eagle Valley Senior Home residents where the children are al-ways welcomed as they do such good singing for the folks there. It’s our present to them before we end our program for the summer.

We participated in the Spring Faire on March 19 and saw many of you there as we displayed our handcrafts and gave a first-hand look at what we do in Sunday School. I am very proud of the work we do and the wonderful team of “St. Paul’s Angels” (our Sunday School teachers and helpers.)

WELCA BIBLE STUDY

Vicki Hamilton’s Bible Study will NOT meet in April. Classes will resume on 5/9 and 6/13.

LISTEN TO YOUR HEART (thanks to Nancy Watkins for sharing!)

Did you know that there is a new “quick re-lease crystals” aspirin that dissolves under

the tongue and work much faster than the tablets? It’s a good idea to keep them in your car, pocketbook, wallet, bedside, etc. in case of emergency.

There are other symptoms of a heart attack besides the pain on the left arm. Be aware of an intense pain on the chin as well as nausea and lots of sweating. There may be NO pain in the chest during a heart attack.

Chest pain may wake you from your deep sleep. If that happens, immediately dissolve two aspirins in your mouth and swallow with a bit of water. Afterwards:

Call 911 - say “heart attack!” Say that you have taken 2 aspirins

Phone a neighbor or family member who lives close by Take a seat on a chair or sofa near the front door

Wait for the ambulance/EMT to arrive DO NOT LIE DOWN

This is something we can all do to help ourselves!

The youth group will be holding their annual Pancake Breakfast on Easter Sunday! We will be serving from 8:30am until 10:30am! We hope that you will bring your appetites for the BEST pancakes in town! Be watching for the Easter Bunny, too ….you never know who will make the pancakes! We look forward to serv-ing you on Easter Sunday! If you have any questions please give Traci a call at 721-5495. Rent-a-Youth or the-Group If you need help around the house, in the yard, or help with a party … … remember you can always RENT-A- YOUTH or THE-GROUP! All you need to do is con-tact Traci at 721-5495 and we will send some help your way! Mother’s Day Tea The Youth Group will be hosting the annual Mother’s Day Tea along with WELCA! Make sure you mark your calendars for Saturday May 7 th at 12:00 pm. We will be having a country western luncheon! That’s right … we have changed It up a little bit. Come enjoy lunch and ice tea with us! We want all moms to come, sit back and relax while we will provide the rest! Again, if you have any questions please give Traci at call at 721-5495!

St Paul’s annual Lenten Potluck Soup Suppers and Com-munion Worship Services continue April 6 and 13. There will be NO supper/service on 4/20. Supper begins at 6:00 p.m. in Friendship Hall with a communion service in the sanctuary at 7:00 p.m.

Note: the suppers are true potlucks, consisting of what-ever folks bring to share. Soups, breads and crackers, salads, and desserts...all are welcome! Please invite friends and family and join us as we gather in community for companionship, conversation, and wonderful food dur-ing this Lenten season.

Stewardship From the Spring Faire team… To all the members of committees and groups who par-ticipated in the Spring Faire on March 19: Thank you! Your willingness to share your time, energy, and creativity for this event is deeply appreciated. You enrich our con-gregation with your generosity throughout the year, using your helping hands and open hearts in ways too numer-ous to list. We are so blessed to have you.

Do you carry your medical history with you? Most people carry the information in their head and forget or have incorrect recall on some critical information, especially during a stressful situation. Do you remem-

ber all your doctors name and phone numbers, dates of previous illnesses, surgeries or immunizations when you arrive at an ER or a new MD? It is best to have every-thing written down and carried in your wallet; so you can pull it out and hand it to the provider. For those with chil-dren you should currently maintain their immuniza-tion records, but it should include any other critical infor-mation as well for each of them. A short form is posted on the bulletin board that will act as a guide to assist you in developing what will work for you. Please take it and complete it at home.

A HUGE thank you to the anonymous donor of the funds needed to purchase and install a new surveillance camera for our church security sys-tem. Our old camera retired itself (aka: ex-

pired!) The replacement will become a reality on 3/30/11. Since our budget did not allow for this expenditure, a very special someone stepped up to donate the necessary funds. Our heartfelt appreciation for this gift which will help ensure the safety of our church and staff.

WE’RE LISTENING … SUGGESTION BOX UPDATE You've probably been wondering what has happened to the suggestions that were dropped in that "Blue & White" suggestion box a few months ago.

Well, the New Membership Committee and your church council have listened and we hope that you have already seen some changes. First of all, we need to point out that the purpose of the suggestion box was to help our committee with ideas to increase and retain membership for St.

Paul's Lutheran Family. Some of the suggestions will not be addressed by the new membership committee; however, Pastor Stan and the council are aware of these concerns. Without going into each specific suggestion or concern, your suggestions have been taken into consideration by the appropriate committees. Some of these suggestions may take time, and of course, some are not within our budget. For instance, the Property Committee is in the process of getting quotes for a brand new St. Paul's Lutheran Family sign that will be on the church corner letting the community know that we are here! However, the funds to complete this project are not in our budget; this is where you can help! Also, have you driven by our church at night? The glass stained window is shining brightly. These projects will let the community to know that "We are here; Come worship with us!"

We will hold our first Spring Faire on March 19th for all our members and the community to see what our committees do to make things happen at St. Paul's. This will be an awesome day to give our members and the community an oppor-tunity to get INVOLVED! Getting involved with committees or even participating in an event is very rewarding and should not be missed when the opportunity is there.

It is the intent of the council to keep the members informed of the financial status of St. Paul's. Once the council ap-proves the financial figures, they are posted in the newsletter. The council invites all members to attend the budget meetings and our annual congregational meetings. All funds and groups are reviewed at that time to give the members what is needed and how they can help if funds are needed. Please remember that all council meetings are open to our members. If you have a concern that needs to be addressed by council, please contact the office to schedule your time on the monthly council agenda.

As a final note, the comments in the "What you enjoy most" at St. Paul's were all very similar! "Everyone at St. Paul's Lutheran Family cares about each other; our members share warmth and friendship." Isn't that what we are all about? Caring; being a family!

On behalf of the New Membership Committee and our church council, we want to thank all of you for your suggestions. This committee and the council will continue to seek ways to improve, increase, and retain membership at St. Paul's. We pray that St. Paul's Lutheran Family continues to grow in faith and fellowship with each other and our community.

God Bless!

Kenneth Paul BeatonKenneth Paul BeatonKenneth Paul BeatonKenneth Paul Beaton

Ken Beaton was born on March 31, 1941, in Lynn, Massachusetts. His par-ents were Arthur Beaton of Scottish descent, and Irene Daigle Beaton of French-Canadian descent. Ken has one brother, Doug, who is a full-time RVer and two sisters, Judy who lives in Fernley, and Cindy who lives in Phoenix. Ken’s father served twenty years as a Machinist Mate Chief Warrant Officer 2 in the Coast Guard. His father then worked in Civil Service for ten years. The family lived in eight states before settling in Lynn, MA., in 1946. Ken’s mother was a homemaker. Both parents passed away in 1998 and 1996 respectively. After graduating from Lynn English High School in 1958, Ken went to prep school for one year and then earned an AA degree in 1961 from Boston Uni-versity Junior College. Ken has two children from his first marriage and one child from his second marriage. Ken’s daughter, Kathleen, teaches in Merri-mac, MA, and she has a daughter and a son. Ken’s son John lives in New Hampshire and has two daughters. His second son, Kenneth, Jr. lives in Reno. Ken has four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

In 1971 Ken earned a BS degree in Business Education from Salem State College in Massachusetts and later earned a Masters (M.Ed. In Business Education) from Utah State University in Logan. Ken has had a varied professional career. He taught Physical Science at Carson Junior High School (1975-78) and then taught at Carson High School (1978-1994). He also sold ads for radio, sold insurance, helped raise $360K for FISH as Capitol Campaign Director, and worked at the Legislature for three sessions. Ken was the Executive Director for the Children’s Museum (2003-2005), was a volunteer starter at the Eagle Valley Golf Course, worked the 2005 Christmas season at Borders Books and sold Chamber of Commerce membership (2006-2008). On January 17, 1998, Ken met Lin Nary (and Sara and Andy Pavell) at a Winter Wine and All That Jazz fund-raiser. Ken and Lin “hit it off” and got married at St. Paul’s on November 14, 1998.

During World War II, Ken’s maternal uncle was in the First Special Service Force in Italy. Ken has been doing W.W.II research on the computer, took four semesters of conversational Italian and four semesters of a WNC writing class. In 2008, Ken and Lin and others visited six battle grounds and three cemeteries in Italy and climbed the mountain where the forces fought, died and were buried. His Italian was very helpful while talking to people in the small Italian communi-ties and “haggling” when making purchases. Ken’s story on this historic event and trip was published in the Nevada Ap-peal. The magazine “Country” (March 2011) just published a Valentine’s Day story from his youth. (Kudos to “published” writer Kenneth Beaton!) Ken and Lin do many activities together. They like to travel and they make at least one big trip per year. Over the years they have rescued two boxer dogs (Rocky and Blue) and four cats. They frequently drive to the Sierra Foothills Wine Country, play golf and were in the Kiwanis together. (Lin is currently involved as secretary with the American Associa-tion of University Women.) For three years, Ken and Lin (and the Pavells and Burgesons) were in a hiking group called the Sierra Striders, a chapter of the National organization called American Volksports Association. For the last twelve years Ken has been involved in many Kiwanis projects, including raising money and soliciting merchandise and services from local businesses for silent auctions and raffles. Ken has received several awards in his lifetime, including “Kiwanian of the Year” two times. Ken is a passionate believer in stimulating and developing his mind and his body. Since 1987, he works out three times a week. His latest workout is called “Power Pump.” It exercises seven muscle groups which really helped when shovel-ing our recent snowfall! Ken has a great memory and is known for his joke-telling. He has a huge repertoire! When Ken finds a good joke, he tells that joke to different people, working each time on improving the timing and voice inflection. It is a great feeling (and gift) to hear people laugh, relieving the stress and tension of everyday life! We feel fortunate that Ken uses his God-given talents to help others and especially here at St. Paul’s. We pray for God’s continued blessings on Ken and Lin!

St. Paul’s Lutheran Family mourns the loss of Carris Henson House, Jr. who passed away on 2/26/11. A memorial service cele-brating Carris’ life was held at St. Paul’s on 3/17/11. The family requests that memorial gifts be made to:

Carris House Memorial Fund c/o St. Paul’s Lutheran Family or to a charity of your choice

We remember Paula and her family during this difficult time.

PLEASE SUPPORT THE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SHELTER

The shelter has 8 kitchens and with children many things disappear into the back yard … kids love to dig! Therefore, I am providing a list of items needed. If you can help, please leave the items in the church entry baskets: Measuring cups and spoons, spatulas, wooden spoons, tableware (eating utensils), special laundry deter-gent (HE generic ... available at Wal-Mart).

THANKS FOR CARING AND SHARING!

To our St. Paul’s “Family”

A BLESSED EASTER TO ALL

from your

St. Paul’s Staff

EASTER JOY

Jesus came to earth, To show us how to live, How to put others first,

How to love and how to give.

Then He set about His work, That God sent Him to do;

He took our punishment on Himself; He made us clean and new.

He could have saved Himself,

Calling angels from above, But He chose to pay our price for sin;

He paid it out of love.

Our Lord died on Good Friday, But the cross did not destroy

His resurrection on Easter morn That fills our hearts with joy.

Now we know our earthly death,

Like His, is just a rest. We'll be forever with Him

In heaven, where life is best.

So we live our lives for Jesus, Think of Him in all we do.

Thank you Savior; Thank you Lord. Help us love like you!
