DADO

Is a slot or trench cut into the surface of a piece of machineable material, usually wood

RABBETIs a recess or groove cut into the edge of a piece of machinable material, usually wood. When viewed in cross section, it is two sided and open to the edge or end of the surface into which it is cut

TOUNGUE

Is widely used for re-entrant angles

GROOVE

It is use for creation of doors, panels, and table tops

BEVEL

An edge of a structure that is not perpendicular to the faces of the piece

INTRODUCTION:Joinery is a part of wood working that involves joining together pieces of wood, to produce more complex items. Some wood joints employ fasteners, bindings, or adhesives, while others use only wood elements. The characteristics of wooden joints strength, flexibility, toughness, appearance, etc. derive from the properties of the joining materials and from how they are used in the joints. Therefore, different joinery techniques are used to meet differing requirements. For example, the joinery used to build a house is different from that used to make puzzle toys, although some concepts overlap. There are different types of wood cuts with different quality and appearance.Wood is hard, fibrous structural tissue found in the stems and roots of trees and other woody plants. It has been used for thousands of years for both fuel and as a construction material. It is an organic material, a natural composite of cellulose of fibers (which are strong in tension) embedded in a matrix of lignin which resists compression.Wood cuts and wood joints are very important to mechanical engineering students because we may encounter different types of it. We are studying it to prepare ourselves when we encounter different types of wood cuts and wood joints.WOOD CUTS

DRAWINGUSES

CHAMPER

A flat surface made by cutting of the edge or corer of a block of wood or other material

STOP CHAMPER

Usually at 45degrees on the side of a board its main purpose is to soften the edge, both visually and more importantly to strengthen the wood corner against dings and dunks

NOSING

A projecting edge, as the part of the thread of the step extending beyond the riser or a projecting part of a buttress

WOOD CUTS

DRAWINGUSES

CENTER BEAD

A rounded shape cut into a square edge to soften the edge and provide some protection against splitting

EDGE BEAD

Can be simple round shapes, or more complex patterns

ROUND

Ideal for some types of furniture making where two pieces of wood need to be joined in the middle, rather than on the ends

WOOD CUTS

DRAWINGUSES

FLUTE

A cyma has horizontal rather than vertical ends

HALLOW

Are used in decorative molding, often framed between moldings with square section

1/4 ROUND

Can be used in making simple boxes or frames

WOOD CUTS

DRAWINGUSES

COVE ROUND

Purpose is to make assembly easier and to increase glue surface area

RED

Are much used for drawer fronts, when they resist the pulling forces well.

REVERSE OGEE

Lower curve is convex and higher one concave

WOOD CUTS

DRAWINGUSES

ROMAN OGEE

Composed of two ogees, mirrored left-to-right and meeting at an apex

SHIP LAP

Resist side forces if accurately made with tight tolerance

COMMON OGEE

It is a kind of sigmoid curve

WOOD CUTS

DRAWINGUSES

ASTRAGAL

Used for face frames and other simple frames

GRECIAN OGEE BEAD

Consisting of two arcs that curve in opposite senses

BEVEL SASH

Most use a sash lock

WOOD CUTS

OGEE SASH

Often used in wall framing on construction site
