BISS Tigers Sports Team Programme
www.bisspudong.com
ForewordThe British International School Shanghai, Pudong is committed to excellence in sports as part of a larger commitment to excellence in education. The guiding principle behind our BISS Tigers teams’ participation in the athletic federations, to which we are affiliated, is our belief in its educational value for our students.
Interschool sports promote character traits of high value to personal development and success in later life. These include the drive to take one’s talents to the highest level of performance; embracing the discipline needed to reach high standards; learning to work with others as a team in pursuit of a common goal; and adherence to codes of fairness and respect. Sports also play an important role in creating a sense of community within the school.
The British International School Shanghai Pudong’s mission defines expectations both on the field and off. In the name of excellence, we aim for a level of sports performance that will frequently produce winning seasons and the realistic opportunity to compete for team or individual championships. We have a strong and committed coaching staff, with increasing numbers of students competing year on year. For the forthcoming year, Heads of Sport have been assigned for: Basketball, Football, Netball, Rugby, Volleyball and Swimming. These coaches have many years’ experience and enthusiasm in their respective sports, with a target of increasing participation and success.
We are committed to the physical and emotional well-being of student athletes and to the social development of the whole person. We recognise that great demands are placed on students who participate in interschool sport, and we are committed to providing support to help them manage these demands and get the most out of their BISS Tigers experience, via leagues, tournaments and international tours. Athletes are expected to adhere to a level of conduct that brings credit to themselves and the school and upholds the values of citizenship and service.
In addition to sports programmes, we deliver a broad range of sports within the PE Curriculum, which create rich opportunities for students to participate in Club Sports, House Tournaments and the promotion of a healthy lifestyle, individual exercise and recreation.
Wayne GrantDirector of Sport
This year, we have decided to produce two important reference books for parents, which cover the school’s extensive sports programme and Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs) as defined in the SPACE programme and which we hope will improve your experience of the two programmes. The idea behind the change in format is to allow parents and students to better plan their year and thus help students to reach the goals that they wish to achieve, whether it be competing for the football team in the ACAMIS tournament, or travelling to Jakarta to compete with the school’s newly formed FOBISIA team.
Splitting the programmes allows students to become involved more in both the sports teams and the CCAs. Students wishing to join a CCA halfway through a term after a sports team has finished can contact Chris Haley to register for a new activity halfway through a term. Please note that being accepted onto a new activity is dependent on availability of places.
SportsmanshipAt BISS Pudong, we understand that success in sport is not merely a matter of achieving victory, and victory without sportsmanship, dignity and honour is hollow. Good sportsmanship is when teammates, opponents, coaches and officials treat each other with respect, and we expect those representing our school to uphold our high standards. Students learn the basics of sportsmanship from the adults in their lives, especially their parents and their coaches. Students who see adults behaving in a sportsmanlike way gradually come to understand that the real winners in sports are those who know how to persevere and to behave with dignity — whether they win or lose a game.
How To Use the BookThe booklet is broken down into the different disciplines. Each discipline is laid out in the same way to make things easier:• Introduction• Coaching staff• 2013/14 Successes• Registration and Trial Dates• 2014/15 Tournaments
Monthly UpdatesTo help keep parents better informed about the programmes, a monthly news email will be sent at the end of each month containing any changes, upcoming sports fixtures, and celebrating the great work and achievements of both students and the activity leaders during this time.
Communication and Cancellation of Games or PracticesAll sports have set days on which they will train, however, at times there may be reason to change or add sessions. On these occassions, the coach will directly email parents in advance to inform them of the changes.
Students are expected to monitor, on a regular basis, the information board outside of The Hub in C Block for any changes.
FixturesSports fixtures will be advertised on the school’s website as far in advance as is possible, as well being advertised on the monthly news email.
Welcome to Our New Look Sports Team Programme
If you have any questions regarding any payment please contact Director of Sports, Wayne Grant.
Late Bus ServiceThe majority of our CCAs in the SPACE programme run from 3.15 - 4.15pm. We run an extensive bus service from Monday to Friday. This service is more limited than the normal after-school services and you may need to select an alternative bus stop to the one you usually use. These buses leave school at approximately 4.20pm. There is NO additional charge for these buses.
Please contact [email protected] if you have any queries regarding our late bus programme.
LocationsA list of all activities and locations will be advertised on the noticeboard outside of The Hub in C block for Years 6 and up, and any daily location changes will also be advertised there.
In the first week of any sports team activity, Years 5 and below will be taken by their class teachers to B Block Hall, where they will be collected by activity leaders.
If you have received the Sports Team Booklet, but not the SPACE booklet as well, please contact Chris Haley at [email protected] and one will be sent home with your eldest child. Alternatively, an online copy of the booklet can be found at www.nordangliaeducation.com/our-schools/shanghai/pudong/students/sports-teams
RegistrationRegistration is a vital starting point for our programmes. It keeps us informed about the volume of students interested in our activities, allowing effective staff and resource preparation, gives us the opportunity to take contact details, allowing for good communication.
To register for one of the sports teams in this booklet take note of:• Registration period• Trial Date• Time(Failure to register within the given period will jeopardise a student’s position on the team if they are successful in the trial)
Any sport which does not have a trial date is a “Competition Only” event. Assessments are still required and will be overseen by Wayne Grant, Director of Sports.
To register for a sports team fill out the relevant registration form which will be located at www.bisspudong.com during the sports registration period. Once you have accessed the website follow the below instructions to find the registration forms.• Hover the cursor over “Our Students” tab at the top of the page• Click the “Sports Teams” option• Click “CCAs - SPACE Programme”
Information will be sent home via email to remind parents and students when a team’s registration period is approaching; the email will also contain a direct link to the individual registration forms.
Please Note: School staff are NOT able to register your activities for you. If you have difficulty with accessing the registration site, please initially try accessing using a VPN or different web browser. If the problem persists, please wait a short period before trying again. Transport HomeCCA bus option is a mandatory box. If your child does not require a CCA bus then please click “Own Transport” in this option.
Students being collected from school after CCAs must be met by parents or their driver at the main gate, and NOT from the Early Years entrance. Activity leaders, who have responsibility for students, cannot drop students off at the Early Years entrance as they have to remain at the main gate until all their students are collected.
Up-to-date contact numbers are very important for us – please ensure these are provided.
After-school bus information is also listed on the website.
PaymentsAlthough most of the tournament and competition costs are paid for by the school, some do incur an extra charge. If any additional fees are required, you will be informed of this via email with clear instruction on how the payment should be made, and to whom it should be paid.
Sports FederationsThe BISS Tigers are affiliated to a number of sports federations that provide structured interscholastic competitions in a range of sports season for our student athletes locally, nationally and internationally.
Association of China and Mongolia International Schools (ACAMIS)For our older students, the highlight of the sporting year is the end-of-season ACAMIS tournament. The BISS Tigers compete in the Green Division and travel across Asia to compete in volleyball, basketball, netball, rugby, swimming and football tournaments, enjoying three days of intense competition and collegiality with other schools from different cities. This is a great learning experience, building teamwork and drawing some outstanding performances from students.
BIG 12The BIG 12 is a new addition to the sports calendar. In an effort to extend seasons, we have developed an additional sports federation that will bring competitive games and tournaments against Local Chinese, Japanese, Korean Schools (with International Divisions) as well as our sister School, BISS Puxi. While this federation is in its formative stages, we will focus only on the following sports: football, basketball and badminton.
China International Schools Sports Association (CISSA)Middle School students play against other schools on a weekly basis in a range of sports as part of the CISSA programme. Different sports operate at different times of the year, with opportunities for teams of boys and girls in football, volleyball and basketball, as well as boys’ rugby and girls’ netball teams. There are also competitions for athletics, tennis and cross-country running. This gives our students the maximum possible exposure to their favourite sports in a competitive but friendly atmosphere, preparing them for tough sporting challenges later on.
Federation of British International Schools in Asia (FOBISIA)Students from Year 4 to Year 10 have the opportunity to compete in the FOBISIA games, international sporting events held three times each year in a variety of destinations across Asia. A team of multi-talented students is selected to compete in football, athletics, swimming and basketball or T-ball. As much a celebration of sport as a competition, the FOBISIA games are a real experience for those who take part.

Shanghai Swim League (SSL)We have a very strong swimming programme and swimmers from Year 3 up train hard and compete regularly in high level competitions throughout the year. Swimmers understand, perhaps as much as anybody, that hard work in training pays off in competition.
Shanghai International Youth Soccer League (SIYSL) Shanghai International Youth Soccer League (SIYSL) is committed to providing a safe, fun, and progressive learning environment to develop recreational and competitive youth soccer players to the best of their ability. The goal of the league is the development of mental and physical talent of all players to the highest level possible, both as an individual and as a team player. The league runs two seasons: 1st from October – November and the 2nd April – June. We will be entering teams in both seasons, without compromising our commitments to our existing sports programme.
The teams compete in age groups in the following sports:
U15 FOBISSEA (Nov): Athletics, Basketball, Football and SwimmingU13 FOBISSEA (March): Athletics, Basketball, Football and SwimmingU11 FOBISSEA (May): Athletics, Football, T-ball and Swimming
Shanghai International Schools Athletics Conference (SISAC)Senior students play high quality competitive sport in the SISAC leagues, with opportunities in Division One and Division Two ensuring that young sportsmen and sportswomen are playing at the right level to challenge and develop them. Students have the experience of hosting and playing away in football, volleyball, rugby, netball and basketball, as well as competing in cross-country, tennis and athletics tournaments. Intense but friendly rivalries with other schools help to build team spirit and our students learn to win well and (occasionally) lose with good grace and determination to learn.

FootballOur football programmes are well organised offering continuity through the teams and year groups. The structure of our football programmes allow our best players access to high class coaching and allows those who are developing their skills plenty of opportunity to progress through the teams.
The traditional values of hard work, dedication and sportsmanship are all held in high esteem, complemented by the total commitment of the coaching staff to individual needs, personal welfare and every student’s enjoyment of the game.Football is an integral part of the curriculum and is played competitively throughout the school from Year 2. For the Junior teams, the emphasis is on enjoying the game and each session is planned to challenge the players, whilst emphasising core skills at all times. As the players progress into the Middle School, their basic skills are supplemented with more complex concepts as their understanding of the game grows. The emphasis for the Upper and Senior teams lies in developing greater consistency and improving performance through more structured practices and increased coaching time. The competitive aspect of the game is a prime focus for Senior Football, and teams will set their targets towards competing in the SISAC and ACAMIS tournaments at the end of the season.
Coaching Staff
Every coach is a member of staff who manages the team; each member of staff is supported with a qualified or highly experienced football coach who is a member of the PE department. This keeps the school club up to date with the latest football practices and offers opportunity for position-specific training sessions.
We also work with external Academies run by Sports For Life and Ebbe Sand Football Academy to offer high level additional training, and we encourage opportunities for students to play in other teams and leagues outside of school.

2013/14 Successes
Development of girls and boys football continues to improve at a fast rate. In all years, participation has increased and along with it, so has the standard of football. At the younger levels, the combination of dedicated teachers, the Ebbe Sand Football Academy and Sport For Life coaching, has helped dramatically to boost the skill and ability level of players. Though winning is not the prime focus beyond CISSA Football, all teams have experienced success through their various ages.
At Senior level, this season proved to be almost a mirror image of the last. The Boys D1 side came second in the SISAC Senior Division League and went on, once again to win the ACAMIS Tournament in Beijing, for a third consecutive year. A fantastic achievement! The Girls repeated their season of last and came second in their Division and lost narrowly 1-0 in the ACAMIS final, to come runners up in the competition.
The senior teams’ successes has been a direct result of the players’ dedication and commitment to training as well as the huge amount of time coaches put into training and fixtures.
U8s, U10s and U12s Competitive Football
The school also offers competitive football opportunities for U8s, U10s and U12s, within the Shanghai International Youth Soccer League. The league will run twice an academic year, the first between September and November, and the second between April and June. There will be 8 Saturday fixtures during each period which students will be able to compete in. Please note, there is a fee of 600 RMB per student to compete in this league, but there is NO fee for students to participate in the training. The program for this age group has remained within the CCA SPACE programme under the heading of Fun and Fit Football. Students can participate in this CCA by simply registering during the normal CCA registration periods.

NetballThrough playing Netball as an extra-curricular sport we aim to maximise talent and performance through the development of core skills, tactical knowledge and games sense, alongside positive attitudes which value respect, commitment, determination and team work.
BISS Pudong encourages pupils of all abilities to enjoy netball, whether it is at recreational or team level. Although we strive for excellence both in performance and attitude, we cater for all students regardless of their level of knowledge and understanding of the game.
Four age groups operate in total, with teams competing in U11, U13, U15 and U19 age groups in CISSA, SISAC and ACAMIS sports leagues. There are plenty of opportunities for players to compete against other international schools from Shanghai and Asia.During the 2013/2014 netball season, the Pudong Tigers performed extremely well in these leagues, and all teams achieved 2nd place at their respective end-of-season tournaments. We look forward to seeing our teams once again achieve great success this year.
Teams
It is our aim to provide every student in Years 5 to 9 with the opportunity to represent the school in netball fixtures. We field teams in the CISSA league and SISAC leagues where we play against other international schools in Shanghai and surrounding provinces. All of the senior teams have the opportunity to compete in the annual ACAMIS tournament which often results in competition outside of Shanghai – it is a fantastic experience for all of the students involved.
Fixtures are played throughout each term in a competitive and sporting spirit. Teams play a strong and well established fixture list, which is becoming more competitive as the popularity of netball at the school and across Shanghai gains strength. We also host and attend regular tournaments which involve a full day’s schedule of competitive games. Last year, the school attended an end-of-season tournament in Beijing on the 31st of May, where all three of the teams achieved great success! Our U11 squad came 3rd in their group. The U13 squad came 2nd in their group, and our U15 squad achieved 1st place! It was a wonderful end to the season and a fantastic achievement for all of the students and coaches involved.
Talented Individuals
We offer position-specific masterclasses with specialist coaches throughout the year, as well as ‘netball conditioning’ sessions which are open to all players throughout the Term 2. These focus on core skills and techniques as well as working on various aspects of fitness related to netball. In addition, we have a school conditioning coach who will support or establish fitness programmes specific to the individual and their sport.
Local Links
We encourage and create opportunities and pathways for individuals to develop and achieve further honors within their sport by joining local clubs and leagues.

RugbyOur rugby programmes are well organised offering continuity through the teams and year groups. The structure allows our best players access to high class coaching and allows those who are developing their skills plenty of opportunity to progress through the teams.
All sides will have the opportunity to train twice a week, with matches taking place on Saturday mornings. The rugby club is designed to give everyone an opportunity to train and learn the sport with a competitive fixture at the weekend for all abilities.
In Term 1, our U18s boys will take part in SISAC and ACAMIS competitions. They compete in both 10-a-side and 15-a-side games. During Term 2, our Minis (U11s and U9s) participate in their season. This is open to all abilities and both boys and girls. Term 3 is for all our junior boys (U15s and U13s) and runs until the end of May. This year we have entered an end-of-season tournament in Beijing on the 31st of May.
Teams
We field teams in the following age groups: U11, U13, U15 and U19s who compete in local leagues with other Shanghai international schools. The U19s compete in the Shanghai International Athletic Conference (SISAC) in the East League, and in ACAMIS, which involves schools from Hong Kong.
We host a number of tournaments and cross-training opportunities; in the past year we have hosted a number of overseas teams and coaches who have given our boys inspiration for the game.

BasketballBasketball is offered for both boys and girls to play as part of a team. We focus on developing core skills, tactical knowledge and game sense, alongside positive attitudes which value respect, commitment, determination and team work.
Basketball is one of our six main sports. It is popular amongst students who enjoy participating and competing at a level suitable to their ability. Although we strive for excellence both in performance and attitude, we cater for all students regardless of their level.
Teams compete at CISSA, SISAC and ACAMIS. Each team will have the opportunity to be involved in pre-season training in preparation for the competitions. The commitment of both students and coaches has seen a huge improvement of the teams over the last few years.
It is our aim to provide every student in Years 6 to 13 with the opportunity to represent the school in basketball fixtures. For the first time, in 2013/14 we fielded both Division 1 and 2 teams in the SISAC league and we will be doing the same for the CISSA season. This past year we also entered a girls and boys team at Junior level.
Fixtures are played throughout the second season at the SISAC level and the third for CISSA, in a competitive and sporting spirit. Teams play a strong and well established fixture list, which is becoming more competitive as basketball gains popularity at the school.
We also host and attend regular tournaments which involve a full day’s schedule of competitive games. Tours provide the opportunity to play high quality opposition as well as experience a different culture.
Coaching Staff
Every coach is a member of staff who will manage each basketball team. All coaches have a good level of playing and coaching experience, with relevant coaching and umpiring qualifications.

VolleyballVolleyball is played by both girls and boys and has gone from strength to strength over the past two years. Both the boys’ and girls’ senior teams have had great success which can be attributed to their commitment, dedication and team spirit. The BISS Tigers compete in the East Division of SISAC and in the Asian ACAMIS tournament. In 2013, both the boys’ and girls’ teams won bronze medals at this event held in Hong Kong.
The success of senior volleyball has made our younger CISSA squad hungry for victory with a larger number of players than ever before. It is also positive to see the senior players attending training in a coaching capacity and seeking to develop the skills of junior squads that will stand the school in good stead for the future.
It is our aim to provide every student in Years 7 to 13 with the opportunity to represent the school in volleyball fixtures. SwimmingSwimming takes place in the school’s own pool year-round. The focus for swimming, both as part of the curriculum and as a club and competitive sport, is on safe participation in the water to competitive swimming within the South East Asian swimming circuit.Young athletes are encouraged to trial for the BISS Tiger Sharks swim teams, and squads train and compete on a regular basis. The coaches are focused on identifying talent and developing performance through highly knowledgeable programming and delivery of sessions. Though swimming is predominantly an individual sport, we work hard to instil the same positive attitudes we do across all sports which value high levels of respect, commitment, determination and teamwork.
The BISS Tiger Sharks is fast developing a strong reputation within the Shanghai Swimming League (SSL), with some fantastic individual performances from our squad members in the 2013/14 school year.
The swimming department has thoroughly enjoyed the past year of competition; the teams are developing into skilled and experienced competitors. Additionally, our swim coaches are driven and motivated for the school year 2014/15, programming has already begun many months ago with some exciting changes and developments. The coaching team are ready to make a big splash in 2014/15 and prove to be big fish in the SSL.
This sports programme is very competitive and selections are based on times. If you are interested in becoming a member of the Tiger Sharks, we hold time trials three times per year.
In 2013/14, the school entered the ACAMIS swim tournament for the 1st time in its history at Nanjing International School and will look to build on the success that was achieved and seek further tours during the Shanghai Swim League Season.
Term 1 swimming trials will take place on Saturday 30th August at the school swimming pool. Students in Years 3 – 6 should report at the aquatics centre at 9am, and students in Years 7 – 13 should attend at 11.30am for the respective sessions. Subsequent swimming trials will take place at different points in the year, and will be advertised closer to the date.

These additional squad sessions are aimed at those competing within the BISS Tiger Sharks swim team and offer invaluable full-hour sessions with the focus not only based on technique but also on developing the swimmers’ interpersonal skills in a sports environment and learning how to become a champion physically and mentally. The aim is to create a limitless environment whereby the swimmer can grow as much as their potential allows. By creating this ‘sky’s the limit’ concept, the swimmer can take these valuable skills and positive personality traits to not only competitive swimming but any chosen sport and into their non-sporting lives.
All swimmers that make the swim squad will sign up to the events for the season. Each swim event carries a cost of 70rmb with the exception of the ACAMIS Tournament, which requires hotel, transport and competition fees.
FOBISIAThe main international tournaments are organised by FOBISIA (the Federation of British International Schools in South and East Asia.). The games are organised as: Under 15, Under 13 and Primary, with invitational events for the Over 15 category. Policies related to the games are determined by the Heads of the 30 member schools, and are based on recommendations by the Heads of PE (HOPE) and HOPE executive committee.

BadmintonThis year is the first year that the school will be submitting teams to compete in badminton competitions, and so ample opportunity for students to play and practice is being provided. Players are encouraged to attend as many of the three practice sessions as they can, which will take place during Monday and Wednesday lunchtime and after school on Mondays, throughout the year. Students wanting to participate in these sessions and compete for the school will need to register for them each term through the SPACE booklet, as the program will run through the year.
The badminton teams will be selected from those students attending the open sessions who will be invited to participate in coaching sessions at different points in the year to help prepare them for competitive matches.
